Carpenter, Peralta homer as Cardinals beat Reds 3-2

Sports

August 11th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Carpenter and Jhonny Peralta homered to back up a second straight dominant start by Jaime Garcia as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 on Wednesday night. Carpenter’s homer in the first inning was his second leadoff home run of the season and 11th of his career. It was also Carpenter’s second career homer against Reds starter Anthony DeScalfani.

Peralta’s solo homer in fourth was the 200th of his career. Peralta is hitting .345 in August. Garcia (9-8) needed just 85 pitches to get through 8-plus innings and 19 of his 24 outs were ground balls or strikeouts. He has given up two runs in his last 16 innings. Seung-Hwan Oh earned his 10th save.

Today, the Redbirds travel to Chicago for the first of a four-game series against the Cubs, at Wrigley Field. Pre-game coverage on KJAN begins at 6:10-p.m., with the first pitch at 7:05.

Holt sparks 8th inning rally as Reds beat Cardinals 7-4

Sports

August 10th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Duvall drove in two runs and Tyler Holt’s double drove in the game-winning run as the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-4 on Tuesday night. Holt’s double off Matt Bowman (1-4) broke a 4-4 tie in the eighth. He then scored from second on an infield hit by Billy Hamilton after Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter bobbled a barehanded attempt to get the speedy Hamilton at first.

Duvall’s two-run single in the third broke a career high 0-for-18 skid and gave the Reds a 2-1 lead. Joey Votto had two hits, an RBI and a walk and has hit safely in 18 of his last 19 games.

Reds lefty Brandon Finnegan struck out five, but walked six in six innings. Michael Lorenzen (2-0) gave up a run in two innings of relief and Raisel Iglesias picked up his first save.

Listen for more action between the Cardinals and the Reds again this evening at 6:15, with the pre-game at 5:20, here on KJAN!

Fall camp crucial for uncertain Cyclones

Sports

August 9th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell is hardly the only new face in Ames these days. Campbell and his entire staff are just a few days into their first fall camp with the Cyclones, who are looking to turn around a stretch of just five wins in 24 games that cost coach Paul Rhoads his job.

The roster has experienced heavy turnover as well, with a staggering 41 newcomers attempting to become acclimated to Campbell’s system in time for the season opener on Sept. 3 against Northern Iowa.

Cardinals place Wacha on 15-day DL with shoulder injury

Sports

August 9th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have placed Michael Wacha on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder inflammation, a day after his latest start, and purchased the contract of top prospect Alex Reyes from Triple-A Memphis. To make room for Reyes, catcher Brayan Pena (left knee) was transferred from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL.

The 21-year-old Reyes started for the World Team at the Futures Game during All-Star week and is 2-3 with a 4.96 ERA in 14 starts and 93 strikeouts in 65 1-3 innings. The start of his season was delayed by a 50-game suspension after testing positive for marijuana use. Reyes is 20-21 with a 3.50 ERA in 69 career minor league starts.

Wacha is 7-7 with a 4.45 ERA. He allowed four runs in five innings and got no decision in a 5-4 come-from-behind victory on Monday.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have activated right-hander Jason Hammel off the bereavement list and optioned right-hander Justin Grimm to Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs made the move Tuesday, a day before Hammel is scheduled to start against the Los Angeles Angels.

Hammel didn’t travel to Chicago’s weekend series at Oakland due to a family matter. He’s 11-5 with a 3.07 ERA in 21 starts. Grimm has a 4.58 ERA in 46 relief appearances for the Cubs this season.
