AHSTW overcomes adversity to beat IKM-Manning in injury plagued game

Sports

September 30th, 2016 by admin

AHSTW got two rushing touchdowns from Joel Becerra and RJ Harris threw and ran for a score as the Vikings came away with a hard fought 27-16 over the IKM-Manning Wolves on Friday night in Manning.  The Wolves got on the board first with a five yard touchdown pass from Jared Johnson to Ben Wegner and they tacked on the two point conversion to lead 8-0.  The Vikings responded on the next drive with an 11 play touchdown drive capped off by one of Becerra’s scores.  They kicked the PAT to make it 8-7 and that’s how the first half ended.  The Vikings had big defensive stop at the end of the first half after IKM-Manning started at the Viking 13 yard line following an interception.  The Vikings ended up forcing a turnover on downs to take the ball back with 2:24 left in the half.

The Vikings came out and took control from the opening drive of the second half. Harris capped off an 8 play drive with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Clint Robinson. The Vikings would score twice more to push their lead out to 27-8 with 7:38 left to play.  IKM-Manning tried to mount a rally and hooked up on a 54-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to Alex Heiman on the first play of the next drive.  But that would be the end of the scoring as a late fumble and turnover on downs would stop the Wolves from fighting back.

The night was plagued by serious injuries with two Vikings players taken from the premises in an ambulance and an IKM-Maning player being helped off the field with a knee injury.  The injuries dampened the spirit of a hard fought game and big win for AHSTW who moves to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the district.  IKM-Manning falls to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the district.

Martinez, Holliday, Cards stay close in race, blank Pirates

Sports

September 30th, 2016 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Carlos Martinez pitched seven sharp innings, Matt Holliday hit an emotional home run and the St. Louis Cardinals stayed in the middle of the NL wild-card race, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-0 Friday night.

The Cardinals began the day trailing San Francisco by one game for the second NL wild-card spot. The Giants played host to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Martinez (16-9) gave up five singles, walked one and struck out nine.

Holliday, out since Aug. 12 because of a thumb injury, was activated off the disabled list at his request Friday. The club informed him earlier this week that it is not planning to bring him back next season.

Holliday was given a standing ovation before he pinch-hit in the seventh. He responded with his 20th home run, and came out for a curtain call.

Jedd Gyorko hit his 29th homer and Brandon Moss hit his 28th for the Cardinals.

Tyler Glasnow (0-2) finished his rookie season with his most effective start, working five innings and giving up Gyorko’s homer. Glasnow did not allow another Cardinal past second.

IKM-Manning host AHSTW in key Class 1A, District 7 contest

Sports

September 30th, 2016 by admin

The IKM-Manning Wolves and AHSTW Vikings will collide in a key Class 1A, District 7 contest on Friday night in Manning.  The Wolves have come up just short in their last two contests against very tough opponents and now have their backs against the wall for a playoff push with a 2-3 record. AHSTW comes in undefeated at 5-0 after winning some tough early season games against Shenandoah and Lawton-Bronson,  then having a little easier time getting wins the last three weeks.

These two teams are very familiar with each other over the years and AHSTW Head Coach Davis Pattee sees much of the same that you would expect from this year’s IKM-Manning squad.

Junior Jared Johnson has taken over the Quarterback duties for the Wolves this year and has thrown for 523 yards and 4 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. The Wolves also have two backs that have rushed for over 300 yards and Coach Pattee has been impressed with their ball distribution and knows their success starts up front.

The Vikings Offense is led by a Junior Quarterback as well in RJ Harris who has played very well.  He’s thrown for 916 yards with 9 touchdowns and just 1 interception, he has also rushed for 6 scores on the season.  A key for the Wolves will be trying to slow him down.

We’ll have coverage of the Wolves and Vikings on KJAN with Pre-Game at 6:30pm and Kickoff at 7:00pm. Listen in on AM1220, FM101.1, online at kjan.com, or on the free KJAN mobile app. Join Chris Parks and Mike Smith for the call and you can also catch live video of the game on KJANTV.

Atlantic returns home to face tough Glenwood team

Sports

September 30th, 2016 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans Football team returns home this week for another tough game in Class 3A, District 7 as they host the 4-1 Glenwood Rams.  The Trojans are trying to move on from last week’s 56-6 loss at Creston which dropped them to 1-4 on the season. The Trojans had a tough time slowing down a powerful Creston run game and Head Coach Mike McDermott knows they face another tough challenge this week against some option attack from Glenwood.

Glenwood brings a balanced offensive attack into the contest with Quarterback Kolten Wilwerding throwing for 673 yards this season with 9 touchdowns and 5 interceptions for the Rams.  Mavrick Decker is his favorite target with 18 catches for 344 yards and 5 touchdowns this season.  Coach McDermott said his team will have to be ready for a balanced attack from the Rams.

Kickoff at the Trojan Bowl between Atlantic and Glenwood is set for 7:30pm.
