IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Brady Ellingson scored 21 of his career-high 23 points in the first half, Cordell Pemsl added 18 points and nine rebounds and Iowa breezed to a 116-84 win over Savannah State on Sunday. The Hawkeyes (2-0) made a school-record 18 3-pointers and led by at least 20 points the entire second half. Iowa’s 116 points are the most in Fran McCaffery’s six seasons as coach and tied for the seventh most in program history.

Troyce Manassa had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Savannah State (0-2), which committed 20 turnovers.  Tyler Cook scored 14 points and Peter Jok had 13 for the Hawkeyes. Iowa’s bench scored 76 points — led by Ellingson, who was used sparingly last season. Ellingson hit 7 of 9 shots, including 4 of 6 3-pointers.

Iowa’s 43 3-point attempts were also a school record. The Hawkeyes have won 39 of their last 40 non-conference home games.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Marcus Peters stripped Kelvin Benjamin with 20 seconds left, Cairo Santos kicked a 37-yard field goal as time expired, and the Kansas City Chiefs overcame a 17-point deficit to top the Carolina Panthers 20-17 on Sunday.
The game was tied when Benjamin caught a pass from Cam Newton, and Peters ripped the ball from his arms . Santos’ fourth field goal of the day split the uprights, lifting the Chiefs (7-2) to their fifth straight victory and 17th win in their last 19 games.

Eric Berry also returned a Newton interception 42 yards for a touchdown as Kansas City’s defense came up with big plays when needed. Alex Smith threw for 178 yards and Spencer Ware ran for 61 yards for the Chiefs, who failed to score an offensive touchdown. Newton threw for 261 yards and a touchdown and ran for 54 yards and a score for the Panthers (3-6).

The game turned late in the third quarter when Chris Jones sacked Newton for a 12-yard loss on third-and-18 at the Kansas City 28, taking the Panthers out of field goal range. Instead of making it a three-possession game, the Panthers were forced to punt. The Chiefs kicked a field goal to make it 17-6 before Berry picked off a pass that Newton heaved into the air under pressure and returned it for the touchdown. Smith passed to Travis Kelce for the conversion, and Santos’ third field goal tied it with 4:25 left.

Up next for the Chiefs: They Return home to host another NFC South foe in Tampa Bay, next Sunday.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Freshman Keith Duncan kicked a 33-yard field goal as time expired and Iowa stunned second-ranked Michigan 14-13 on Saturday night, damaging the Wolverines’ playoff hopes. Akrum Wadley had 115 yards rushing for the Hawkeyes (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten), who beat a top-five team for the first time in six years.

Michigan (9-1, 6-1, No. 3 CFP) appeared to have the game wrapped up on Channing Stribling’s interception of Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard with 1:54 left. But the Hawkeyes defense stuffed the Wolverines, and a facemask penalty put Iowa at Michigan’s 36 with 1:23 to go.

Duncan then drilled the ball through the uprights from nearly the exact same spot where Daniel Murray hit the game-winner eight years ago to knock Penn State out of the national title picture. But Michigan is still very much alive, in part because Clemson and Washington lost earlier in the day. Wilton Speight threw for 103 yards with a pick for the Wolverines, who gained just 201 yards of offense.

After three straight homes losses and a 41-14 defeat at Penn State last week, the Hawkeyes redeemed themselves. The defense looked like the one that was expected to help the Hawkeyes compete for a second straight Big Ten title, and the offense did just enough to give the program a win it sorely needed after weeks of listless play.

Iowa travels next week to face Illinois, in its last road game of 2016. The Hawkeyes are 3-1 on the road.

MACOMB, Ill. (AP) — Michael Malloy ran for 92 yards and two touchdowns, Eli Dunne threw for two scores and Northern Iowa beat Western Illinois 30-23 on Saturday. Dunne completed 19 of 27 passes for 209 yards with one interception and Jalen Rima had four receptions for 79 yards for Northern Iowa (5-5, 4-3 Missouri Valley Conference).

Malloy capped an 11-play, 78-yard game-opening drive with a 2-yard touchdown run and Dunne hit Logan Cunningham for a 9-yard score to make it 14-0 with 4:51 left in the first half. A touchdown pass from Dunne to Daurice Fountain and a 6-yard scoring run by Malloy — sandwiched around Lance Lenoir’s 9-yard TD catch for Western Illinois — made it 27-9 with 7:34 left and the Panthers held on from there.

Sean McGuire threw three touchdown passes — including two to Isaiah Lesure — for Western Illinois (6-4, 3-4).

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Jacob Park threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns, Allen Lazard had a career-high 10 receptions for 120 yards and a score and Iowa State slipped past Kansas 31-24 for its first conference win of the season on Saturday. David Montgomery had a career-high 169 yards rushing for Iowa State (2-8, 1-6 Big 12).

The Cyclones scored on four-consecutive drives, including a 37-yard field goal by Cole Netten that capped the scoring with 2:48 remaining, and Jomal Wiltz intercepted a pass at the ISU 38 to seal it 40 seconds later.

Matthew Wyman’s 37-yard field goal gave Kansas a 17-10 lead early in the second half. Park hit Deshaunte Jones for a 12-yard touchdown and, after a 39-yard TD run by Kansas’ Ke’aun Kinner, Mitchell Harger scored on a 6-yard run to make it 24-22 with 10 seconds left in the third quarter.

A 46-yard run by Montgomery set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Joel Lanning gave the Cyclones the lead, 28-24, for good with 12:03 left. Carter Stanley passed for 171 yards and Kinner had 152 yards rushing for Kansas (1-9, Big 12 0-7).

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Bennett Koch and Jeremy Morgan scored 11 points apiece and Northern Iowa cruised to a 74-37 season-opening win over Coe College on Saturday. The Panthers had an early 17-0 run to build a 22-4 lead and their Division III foe never mounted a challenge. It was 45-18 at the half as the Kohawks shot 29 percent and had 10 turnovers before the break. Morgan had all of his points during the run, including three 3-pointers.

Northern Iowa shot 54.5 percent in the first half and 53 for the game. Northern Iowa got 45 points from reserves, including 10 from Isaiah Brown. Coe finished with 18 turnovers that led to 22 points for the Panthers, who also had a 32-10 advantage on inside scoring. Matt Vonderhaar had 10 points for Coe, which only had one free throw in the game.
