DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – De’Antae McMurray had a career-high 24 points and Drake held off a late rally to beat Loyola of Chicago 102-98 in the Missouri Valley opener for both teams on Thursday night. Reed Timmer added 23 points for the Bulldogs (3-10), who led from the 11:36 mark of the first half and had a 16-5 run to lead 89-69 with 4:41 left.
But Drake allowed the Ramblers (10-4) to score 16 straight in the next 2:39 to get to 89-85 and again within four at 96-92 with 53 seconds left. Drake made 6 of 8 free throws from there to hold on for their second straight win after an eight-game losing streak. Billy Wampler added 16 points, Ore Arogundade scored 15 and Nick McGlynn 12.
Donte Ingram set career highs with 30 points and 10 rebounds for Loyola. He made 12 of 18 from the field but just 1 of 5 from 3-point range. Ben Richardson added 22 points and Milton Doyle scored 12.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Freshman guard Carsen Edwards scored 19 points and Dakota Mathias added 17 as No. 15 Purdue dominated Iowa 89-67 on Wednesday night in the Big Ten opener for both teams. It was the seventh consecutive victory for the Boilermakers (12-2, 1-0), who also got 16 points from Isaac Haas, 15 from Vince Edwards and 11 points and 10 rebounds from Caleb Swanigan, who recorded his fifth consecutive double-double.
Big Ten scoring leader Peter Jok of Iowa, who came in averaging 22.6 points, was held to 13 on 4-of-15 shooting, including 1 of 7 from 3-point range. Mathias was the primary defender on Jok. It was Purdue coach Matt Painter’s 250th victory at his alma mater. Painter is in his 12th season with the Boilermakers, who lost to Iowa twice last season.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Dequon Miller had 17 points, Alize Johnson had a double-double and Missouri State held on to defeat Northern Iowa 68-64 in the Missouri Valley Conference opener Wednesday night after almost squandering a 24-point lead.
The Bears (10-4) had a 19-0 run and raced to a 32-8 lead at the 6:47 mark of the first half, capped by Ronnie Rousseau III’s 3-pointer, their eighth to that point. Miller had three, Johnson and Ryan Kreklow two each. The Panthers got the deficit down to 39-22 at halftime.
But after shooting 32 percent in the first half, Northern Iowa shot 57 in the second, went 16 of 20 from the foul line and forced 11 early turnovers. The margin was 22 with 14 minutes left but a 15-2 run cut it to 55-46 with 9:16 left. Eventually a pair of layups by Jeremy Morgan made it a two-point game twice in the final 20 seconds before two free throws by Kreklow iced it with three seconds left.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Former Drake assistant Courtney Graham has sued Bulldogs coach Jennie Baranczyk and the university, claiming she was forced to resign after her homosexuality became public.
In her recently filed federal lawsuit, Graham alleged that Baranczyk slowly stripped her of her duties as assistant head coach after she brought her girlfriend and now wife to a home game in November 2014.
Baranczyk and athletic director Sandy Hatfield-Clubb, through spokesman Ty Patton, declined to comment. Patton said that the university’s policy is not to comment on personnel matters or pending lawsuits.
State fishing licenses for the new year are now available. Iowa Department of Natural Resources fisheries chief, Joe Larschied, says you do still have some time on your old license. “Your 2016 is good all the way through January 10th, but if you want to get a jump on the 2017 season, we encourage you to go out and get your license,” Larschied says.
He says they now have a three-year license available. “What that does is it locks your price in for three solid years. So if you want to lock it in and not worry about thinking about buying license for three years, that’s a good option,” Larscheid says. “We also have the outdoor combo license where you buy the fishing and hunting license at the same time.”
Lascheid says there are many places to buy your license. He says you can go online or buy them on your cellphone, or go to bait shops, Walmarts, Kum & Go stores. Larscheid says they have a map on their website at IowaDNR.gov to see a list of the vendors and a map.
Once you have your license, Larscheid says they have a way to help you catch fish. Larscheid suggest you check the website and go to the fish report, which has detailed maps that shows where the fish are. A three-year fishing license costs 53 dollars and the D-N-R says that saves you four dollars compared to buying a new license every year. The outdoor combo license that includes hunting, fishing and a habitat fee is 47 dollars.

DALLAS (AP) — James Harden scored 24 of his 34 points by halftime and had 11 assists in just three quarters as the Houston Rockets beat Dallas 123-107 to improve to 13-2 this month. Justin Anderson had 22 points for the Rockets, who have a chance to tie the single-month club record of 15 wins set in November 1996. The game featured eight technical fouls, the ejection of Rockets forward Trevor Ariza (ah-REE’-zuh) and a pair of flagrant fouls called on the Mavericks.
MIAMI (AP) — Russell Westbrook delivered 29 points, 17 rebounds and 11 assists as Oklahoma City posted a 106-94 win at Miami. It was Westbrook’s NBA-high 15th triple-double of the season, and the sixth time he’s done it within the first three quarters. Enes Kanter finished with 19 points and Steven Adams added 15 in the Thunder’s fourth straight win.
UNDATED (AP) — Shannon Brooks turned a deflected pass into a 13-yard, go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter as Minnesota upset Washington State, 17-12 in the Holiday Bowl at San Diego. The Golden Gophers were looking to regroup after threatening to skip this game if 10 teammates suspended following a sexual assault investigation weren’t reinstated. Their boycott lasted less than 36 hours before the players backed down.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Columbus Blue Jackets have extended their team-record winning streak to 13 games with a 4-3 triumph against Boston. The Jackets wasted a 3-0 lead before Nick Foligno (foh-LEE’-noh) scored a power-play goal midway through the third period. The streak is four off the NHL record set by the 1992-93 Penguins.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Nigel Hayes scored 20 points and Zak Showalter added 18 to lead 14th-ranked Wisconsin to a 72-52 win over Rutgers in the Big Ten opener for both teams. Wisconsin opened with a 16-4 run en route to a 15-point halftime lead. Hayes delivered 12 points by intermission, Showalter finished with four steals and Ethan Happ had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Badgers.
