The Spartans had to rally in the first quarter to take a 12-10 lead and then had to come back again in the second quarter to head to the locker room tied at 24 at halftime. The Spartans made took much care of the basketball in the second half and slowly pulled away for a 59-44 win.  Kealey Nelson had a big game for the Spartans with 26 points, 14 of those in the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs were led by 10 points from Erin Weber. They fall to 4-2 on the season and next will travel to West Harrison on Tuesday.

The Spartans started the 4th quarter with a couple of quick buckets to push the lead back to 7. The Bulldogs would try to rally late and got the margin back down to 3 but couldn’t get any closer. Dakota Rold came up with a huge offensive rebound off a Noah Pettepier free throw miss with under a minute to go and got fouled to get to the line for the double bonus. He hit the second of two free throws to make the lead 4 and that’s where it would stay. The Spartans won it 66-62.

Drew Buckholdt finished with 22 points to lead the Spartans, who improve to 5-0 on the season.  Next up the Spartans host Coon Rapids-Bayard on Tuesday.

Sports

December 9th, 2016 by Jim Field

The Atlantic Trojans Boys hoops team survived a tough road test on Friday night at Creston, pulling off a hard fought 65-60 win.  Atlantic scored first in the game but trailed most of the first half thanks to a red hot shooting half from Creston Sophomore Kylan Smallwood.  The Panthers led 22-17 after one as Smallwood dropped in 15 points in the first quarter and finished the first half with 21. Atlantic weathered the early burst and got two late second quarter buckets from Garrett Franken to lead 36-33 at the half.

The game would go back and forth in second half with each team holding multiple leads and multiple ties. Atlantic got a couple big buckets from Scott Leonard on nice dishes in the fourth quarter and then came up big at the free throw line.  The Trojans made 8-9 from the charity stripe in the final quarter to seal the win, including four big ones from Austin Alexander in the waning moments.  Head Coach Alan Jenkins knew Creston could be a big test and was happy to get a tough win.

The Trojans were led by Franken with 21 points and Scott Leonard finished with 20 that included 10 in the first quarter. Atlantic is now 4-0 on the young season with a big Hawkeye Ten showdown with Glenwood looming on Tuesday night.  Coach Jenkins said they’ll approach it like any other game.

Creston was led by Kylan Smallwood with 26 points and the Panthers are now 3-2.
