Iowa’s Jok and UNI’S Morgan forcing defenses to adjust

Sports

December 15th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Two Iowa natives putting together banner senior seasons will be featured Saturday in Des Moines when Iowa plays Northern Iowa in the Hy-Vee Classic. Hawkeye senior guard Peter Jok is the reigning Big Ten Player of the Week. The Des Moines native is averaging nearly 24 points per game and more than six rebounds. Panther senior guard Jeremy Morgan was named the Missouri Valley Player of the Week after pouring in a career-high 38 points in a win over North Dakota. The Iowa City native is averaging more than 18 points and seven rebounds.

The Hawkeyes have battled inconsistency in a 5-5 start and Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery is confident that will change as they gain more experience. McCaffery says inexperienced teams have difficulty putting together complete games and that is why last weeks win over Iowa State was such a positive step.

UNI coach Ben Jacobson says Jok is difficult to cover. Jacobson says they key is to limit the number of open looks Jok gets at the basket. Hesays it will be a difficult assignment. The Panthers are 5-4.

Glenwood Girls pull away from Atlantic in second half Tuesday

Sports

December 13th, 2016 by admin

The Glenwood Girls Basketball team picked up their first win of the season with a 55-44 win over Atlantic on Tuesday night.  The Rams took advantage of an ice cold fourth quarter from the Trojans to pull away for the win. Glenwood led by 6 at the end of the first quarter but Atlantic rallied to tie the game at 26 at halftime.  It was a three point Glenwood lead by the end of the third and then mistakes began to mount for Atlantic in the fourth.  The Trojans had multiple turnovers down the stretch and only managed one made field goal in the fourth as Glenwood outscored them 18 to 10 in the quarter.  Atlantic Head Coach Kelly Juhl said the Trojans just aren’t a cohesive team right now.

A bright spot for the Trojans was their foul shooting as they were 20-25 for the game from the stripe. Atlantic was led in the loss by Catherine Leonard with 12 points while Freshman McKenzie Waters dropped in 10. Atlantic falls to 0-6 and will host Shenandoah on Friday night.

Glenwood was led by Baylee Baker with 14 points and Brooklyn Taylor with 13. The Rams are now 1-5 and will travel to Denison-Schleswig on Friday.
