DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Karli Rucker scored 24 points and North Scott dominated the overtime period to win the Class 4A state championship with a 52-40 victory over Marion on Saturday night. North Scott (21-5) rallied from a six-point deficit early in the fourth quarter, then outscored Marion 13-1 in the extra four minutes to win going away. It was the first state championship for the Lancers after two runner-up finishes.

Rucker’s sister, Rylie, added nine points for North Scott, while two freshmen — Presley Case and Grace Boffeli — each scored seven. Boffeli also grabbed 10 rebounds, seven on the offensive end. Mia Laube led Marion (24-2) with 11 points, Chloe Rice scored nine and Randi Wright had six. The Indians started three juniors, a sophomore and a freshman, so they should contend again next season.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Zoe Young scored 21 points and West Des Moines Valley used a big second-quarter burst to beat Cedar Falls 71-59 Saturday night and win the Class 5A state championship. Hannah Fuller added 16 points and seven rebounds for the Tigers (24-2), who wiped out a seven-point deficit with an 18-2 run that left Cedar Falls scrambling to catch up.

Cedar Falls had upset Indianola in the semifinals but could not match Valley’s depth and balance. Freshman Alex Honold had 13 points and nine rebounds for Valley and Jamie Feldt scored 11. Feldt’s twin sister Jackie helped out with four points and six rebounds.

The title was the first for Valley and came in the school’s 12th trip to the state tournament and fourth appearance in the finals. Cynthia Wolf led Cedar Falls (23-3) with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Elle Ruffridge scored 22 points in the final game of her record-breaking career to lead Pocahontas Area past Sioux Center 61-38 Saturday for the Indians’ second straight Class 3A state championship.

Whether she was scoring herself or setting up teammates, the dynamic 5-foot-4 guard delighted her school’s large fan following one last time in a victory that was surprisingly one-sided.

Sioux Center entered the game 26-0 with a talented group of athletes, but the Warriors were no match for their quicker, sharp-shooting opponent. Pocahontas (27-1) made 12 3-pointers and held Sioux Center scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Ruffridge went 6-for-8 from 3-point range and added seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Payton Hjerleid added 12 points for the Indians, Faith Meyer scored 11 and Ashlyn Weidauer had eight.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Lizzy Wendell scored 25 points, leading three Bulldogs to reach 20, and No. 22 Drake beat Wichita State 105-89 on Saturday, winning its 19th straight game and becoming the first team to go undefeated in Missouri Valley Conference regular-season play. The victory also gave the Bulldogs a 13-0 home record, becoming the second team in program history to go unbeaten at home since 1978-79. Additionally, Drake (25-4, 18-0) has its highest win total since 2001-02.

The Bulldogs and the Shockers both have first-round byes for the conference tournament that opens Thursday in Moline, Illinois. While Drake awaits to learn its opponent, Wichita State will play Southern Illinois on Friday.

Sammie Bachrodt added 23 points and Brenni Rose 22 with both making five of Drake’s school-record 19 3-pointers on 31 attempts. Drake, which led 51-44 at halftime, broke the game open by scoring the final 12 points of the third period, with Wendell and Becca Hittner scoring five points each in the run, to go up 83-64. Drake led by as many as 27 in the fourth quarter. Rangie Bessard led the Shockers (14-15, 9-9) with 24 points and nine rebounds.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Kayla Goth scored a career-high 25, Eternati Willock had a double-double and No. 24 Kansas State made all 12 of its free throws in the last 1:11 to defeat Iowa State 74-67 in the Big 12 tournament quarterfinals on Saturday.

The fourth-seeded Wildcats (22-9) never trailed after a 14-0 run to lead 50-38 late in the third quarter. K-State faces the Texas Tech-Baylor winner in the semifinals on Sunday. The Cyclones (18-12) had an 11-2 run to tie the game at 56 with 6:50 to play. Two free throws by Breanna Lewis started an 8-0 run that carried to Goth’s free throws with 1:11 remaining as Iowa State suffered a drought of 5:49.

The Cyclones missed nine consecutive shots and the K-State free throws offset ISU making 2 of 3 shots in the last minute. Willock had 12 points and 10 rebounds coming off the bench with Goth, who had five rebounds and three steals. Kindred Wesemann also had 12 points. Emily Durr hit five 3s and had 21 points for Iowa State, which had won five straight.

Hunters in Iowa killed just under 101,397 deer this past season. Iowa DNR wildlife researcher Tyler Harms says that’s about 3,000 fewer than in the 2015-16 season, but nearly identical to the harvest from two years ago. “We’ve been holding right around that 100,000 mark for the last few years, which to us is a good sign – indicative of a stable deer population in Iowa,” Harms says.

A big factor in the lower numbers this past year was unseasonably warm weather early in the season, according to Harms. He admits some hunters are a frustrated they aren’t seeing as many deer as they’d like. “What we’re hearing, overall statewide, is hunters are pretty pleased with the numbers,” Harms says. “Obviously, that’s going to change depending on specific areas in the state.”

The deer population in southeast Iowa, for example, has decreased. That’s due in large part to a disease outbreak known as E-H-D. “That are was hit pretty hard with epizootic hemorrhagic disease a couple years ago, which can have some pretty drastic impacts on local population,” Harms says.

The Iowa DNR has a goal to manage for a deer population that can provide a harvest of between 100,000 and 120,000 deer each year, based on the recommendations agreed upon by a state deer task force. Around 170,000 hunters took part in the latest deer season. Harms says deer hunting license sales have been “stable” over the last 5 to 6 years.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Daxter Miles Jr. tied a career high with 23 points to lead No. 10 West Virginia to an 87-76 victory over No. 24 Iowa State on Friday night. Nathan Adrian added 16 points for the Mountaineers (24-7, 12-6 Big 12), who clinched the second seed in next week’s conference tournament behind top-ranked Kansas.

Iowa State (20-10, 12-6) can earn the third seed if No. 11 Baylor loses at Texas on Saturday. Naz Mitrou-Long led the Cyclones with 22 points. Monte Morris and Deonte Burton scored 17 apiece, and Matt Thomas had 16. Miles scored 16 of his team’s 18 points during an eight-minute stretch spanning both halves.

Iowa State has relied on some strong 3-point shooting during a solid stretch in February, and that held true against the Mountaineers. But its accuracy was shoddy from other parts of the court.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Mikayla Nachazel scored 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Springville shut down Turkey Valley 45-36 Friday night to win its second consecutive Class 1A state championship.

Rylee Menster added 14 points and four assists for the Orioles (25-2), who won their third title overall and became the first 1A team to repeat since Rock Valley in 2002 and 2003. It was a rematch of last year’s championship game, which Springville won 48-47.

Springville also won the state title in 2008. Nachazel, a 5-foot-11 junior, had a double-double by halftime (10 and 10) and was voted captain of the all-tournament team for the second straight year. Shelby Reicks and Sadie Nymeyer each scored 13 points for Turkey Valley (22-3), which made a late run after falling behind by 14 but couldn’t get the stops it needed to climb all the way back.
