ST. LOUIS (AP) — Carlos Martinez pitched effectively into the eighth inning and the St. Louis Cardinals once again beat Wily Peralta, topping the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 Tuesday night. Martinez (1-3), making his sixth start of the season, retired the first 12 batters. He gave up an unearned run on four hits in 7 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking one.

Trevor Rosenthal pitched a perfect ninth for his third save in three chances. Peralta (4-2) fell to 0-9 in his last 11 starts against the Cardinals. He allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Cardinals place Lyons on DL, recall Tuivailala

Sports

May 2nd, 2017 by Jim Field

ST. LOUIS, MO., May 2, 2017 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today, prior to tonight’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers, that they have placed left-handed pitcher Tyler Lyons (right intercostal strain)  on the 10-day disabled list and recalled right-handed pitcher Sam Tuivailala from Memphis (AAA).

Lyons, who began the season on the disabled list while recovering from right knee surgery, had appeared in two games since joining the active roster on April 20.   He worked 3.0 innings, going 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA, including a scoreless 7th inning in last night’s game.

Tuivailala, who started the season with St. Louis, was recalled as the team’s 26th man for last Thursday’s day-night double-header, but did not appear in the final game of the twin bill and was returned to Memphis following the game.  Tuivailala, 24, was 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA in three games (3.0 IP) for the Cardinals earlier this season.   At Memphis, he was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and one save in eight games, striking out eight batters while allowing just four hits and one walk.

Tuivailala wears uniform no. 64.

Two-piece uniforms approved for US high school wrestlers

Sports

May 2nd, 2017 by Jim Field

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The U.S. National High School Athletic Association has approved two-piece uniforms for wrestling in hopes of increasing participation in the ancient sport.

Starting in 2017-18, prep wrestlers can wear either a traditional singlet or a uniform featuring tight compression shorts and a shirt.

The singlet can often be an unflattering uniform — especially for wrestlers in higher weight classes — and the association says experimental use of a two-piece uniform was met with positive reviews.

The international wrestling federation has previously explored the idea of two-piece uniforms in the Greco-Roman discipline, and singlets based off a country’s flag were approved in time for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Jamaal Charles signs 1-year deal with Denver Broncos

Sports

May 2nd, 2017 by Jim Field

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Jamaal Charles, the Kansas City Chiefs’ all-time rushing leader, has signed with the AFC West rival Denver Broncos.

“Excited to have Jamaal Charles join the Broncos,” general manager John Elway tweeted Tuesday afternoon upon signing Charles to a one-year, incentive-laden deal. “A great addition to our backfield, and we’re thrilled we won’t have to play against him!”

The Chiefs cut the 30-year-old running back in a cost-cutting move this winter. He played in just eight games over the last two seasons after tearing his right ACL in October 2015.

Charles ran for 7,260 yards and 43 touchdowns in nine seasons with the Chiefs, who ended Denver’s five-year run as division champs last year.
