Sports

April 21st, 2017 by Ric Hanson

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Infielder Jhonny Peralta was put on the 10-day disabled list by the St. Louis Cardinals because of an upper respiratory issue. Peralta sat out the four previous games, and the move was retroactive to Sunday. He is hitting .120 (3 for 25) with no RBIs.

St. Louis recalled left-hander Tyler Lyons before Thursday night’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers. Lyons’ 2016 season ended July 31 because of a right knee stress reaction. He made three appearances in rehabilitation games with Triple-A Memphis this season, allowing two runs in 14 innings.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jett Bandy, Eric Thames and Travis Shaw each hit home runs to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-5 on Thursday night. Bandy hit a two-run homer in the sixth and Thames put Milwaukee ahead with a two-run shot off Carlos Martinez (0-3) in the fifth. Shaw’s three-run blast in the first made it 12 consecutive games going yard for the Brewers, who lead the majors with 32 home runs.

Zach Davies (1-2) allowed four runs on eight hits in 5 1-3 innings. He walked two and struck out five, but needed Thames’ NL-leading eighth home run and seventh in the last eight games for his first win in four starts. Jacob Barnes pitched the ninth for his first save of the season.

Matt Carpenter hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth and Kolten Wong, whose career-high seven triples led the Cardinals in 2016, hit his first of the season in the top of the second with the bases loaded.

Iowa administrator testifies fired coaches often gay

Sports

April 19th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A former University of Iowa athletic administrator says that during her tenure she became concerned after noticing female coaches who were fired often were gay and had become more open about their sexuality.

Jane Meyer testified Wednesday about Iowa coaches as her case continued in Des Moines, where jurors are considering her claim that she suffered workplace discrimination as a gay woman in a relationship with a Hawkeye coach. Meyer alleges the school also retaliated against her and paid her less than another deputy athletic director.

Meyer is seeking damages for pay and emotional distress. Meyer testified she felt she’d been “tucked away” when decisions on retaining women’s coaches were made and that subpar facilities kept those coaches from succeeding at times.

The trial will continue Thursday.

Josh Bell had tied the score with a fourth-inning homer to center against Michael Wacha (2-1), who had retired his first 10 batters.

St. Louis is 6-9, winning its opener and losing nine of 11 before the sweep.

Atlantic Head Coach Ed DenBeste: “It was good for us to head to Denison and play today.  We played on one of the longer courses we have played this year.  Also the 3 pars threes on the back are challenging and there were some tougher pin placements.  This was a good test of us at this point in the season.  Nice round by Jake one over 36.  Ben said he struggled with the putter but had a nice 4 over 39.  Matt played well today good to see him be our second lowest.  Zac wasn’t feeling that well but had a solid 4th score for us.  Good to see Nate and Cyle finish in the lower 40s.”
