Keni Harrison wins 100-meter hurdles at Drake Relays in Iowa

Sports

April 29th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Keni Harrison cruised to victory in the women’s 100-meter hurdles at the Drake Relays.  She won in a world-leading 12.56 seconds despite the cold, rain and wind and a field that featured six other runners ranked in the world’s top 10.

In the women’s 400 hurdles, Rio Olympics bronze medalist Ashley Spencer stumbled into the fifth hurdle after her hip locked. Spencer fell and failed to finish, and fellow American Georganne Moline won in a world-leading 54.66.

Clayton Murphy won the men’s 1,500 in 3:41.75 – his third victory in a week. The others came in the 4×800 at the World Relays in the Bahamas and the USA Track and Field mile road track title in Des Moines on Tuesday.

Rain postpones Reds-Cardinals game in St. Louis

Sports

April 29th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds has been postponed because of rain. No makeup day has been announced and a doubleheader on Sunday has been ruled out.

The Cardinals, winners of nine of their past 11, were set to start Mike Leake (3-1, 1.32 ERA). The Reds, who have lost eight of nine games, expected Bronson Arroyo (2-2, 6.86) to make his fifth start of the season.

The teams are scheduled to play at 1:15 p.m. Sunday, but that game is already in question. The St. Louis region is expecting up to 7 inches of rain during the weekend. Forecasts call for rain throughout Sunday around Busch Stadium.

Iowa’s largest utility aims to produce only renewable energy

Sports

April 29th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s largest utility is in the midst of a $3.6 billion investment in wind power and intends to keep spending on the towers with a goal of producing 100 percent of its energy from renewable sources.

The Des Moines Register reports that MidAmerican Energy plans to build 1,000 more turbines over the next couple of years on top of the more than 2,000 it already has around the state. When completed, the utility’s share of its energy that comes from renewable sources will jump from 55 percent to nearly 90 percent.

CEO Bill Fehrman says it’ll take about $2 billion and 550 turbines more to bring MidAmerican close to 100 percent. Bloomberg New Energy Finance analyst Daniel Shurey says the move would set a new precedent in the country.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Vladimir Tarasenko scored twice, including the tiebreaking goal with 3:51 left to give the St. Louis Blues a 3-2 victory over the Nashville Predators in Game 2 on Friday night to tie the Western Conference semifinal series. Jori Lehtera also scored for the Blues, and Jake Allen stopped 22 shots — including 14 in the third period. Game 3 is Sunday at Nashville, Tennessee.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Miguel Sano and Joe Mauer hit consecutive two-run doubles in the eighth inning and the Minnesota Twins rallied for a 6-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night. The Royals have dropped eight straight.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs began bolstering their defense in the second round of the NFL draft on Friday night, selecting defensive end Tanoh Kpassgnon out of Villanova with the 59th overall pick. The 6-foot-6, 289-pound Kpassgnon is the first player chosen from the Football Championship Subdivision school since offensive lineman Ben Ijalana in 2001. But despite playing at a smaller school, his raw athleticism and impressive Senior Bowl performance put him on many draft radars.

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Bengals helped their defensive front by taking edge rusher Jordan Willis from Kansas State in the third round. The Bengals had trouble getting pressure on the quarterback last season and finished with their second-lowest sack total in the last eight years.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Former Northern Iowa player Ali Farokhmanesh is returning to the Missouri Valley Conference as an assistant at Drake. The 29-year-old Farokhmanesh has spent the last three seasons at Nebraska, most recently as the director of player relations and development. Drake coach Niko Medved announced the hiring Friday.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — LaShawn Merritt held off Rio relay teammate Tony McQuay and 2012 silver medalist Kirani James of Grenada to win the men’s 400 Friday at the Drake Relays. Merritt came in first at 45.41 seconds in Des Moines. Native Iowan Jenny Simpson won the women’s 1,500 in 4:16.10.
