Atlantic Scores: Nate Gifford 77, 5th. Jake Olsen 77, 6th. Matt Gearheart 77, 7th. Ben Renaud 81. Cyle Renaud 84. Zac Stork 86.

Atlantic Head Coach Ed DenBeste: “Today was a good test for our golf team.  Several state qualifies from last year were here in Carroll.  We knew we had to play one of our best rounds to win.  We also played from the blue tees which made the course more challenging today.

This was a great win for us.  We beat last years score by 7 strokes and played different tees.  Would have liked to see Jake a little lower today.  Had struggles some with the putter.  Great to see Matt and Nate shoot their score today.  Nate has really come on in the last few weeks.  Ben was a little high as well.  Need him to bring that down as we head into next week.  Also want to see Zac get his score down.  He had to battle today.  Just wasn’t there.  This was Cyle’s first time on the course.  Good score but I know he wanted better.  Hope this is a good boost for us heading into Conference and Sectional play.”

ATLANTA (AP) – Tommy Pham doubled and hit a two-run homer after his recall from the minors, Matt Carpenter also hit a two-run homer and the St. Louis Cardinals overcame injuries to two starting outfielders to beat the Atlanta Braves 10-0 on Friday night.

Lance Lynn (4-1) allowed four hits in six innings, and has given up just two runs while winning four straight starts.

Aledmys Diaz had three hits and three RBIs, including a two-run double in the Cardinals’ four-run third and a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Pham was recalled from Triple-A Memphis and started in center field after outfielder Stephen Piscotty was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain. Dexter Fowler also was held out with a strained right shoulder suffered in Thursday’s 5-4 loss to Milwaukee.

Mike Foltynewicz (0-4) gave up seven runs and nine hits with two walks in four innings.

U. of Iowa to review job practices after $1.4M bias verdict

News, Sports

May 5th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa will hire an outside firm to review its employment practices after a jury ruled that it discriminated and retaliated against a high-ranking gay female athletic administrator. President Bruce Harreld announced Friday the independent review would begin with the athletics department, which was the subject of Jane Meyer’s three-week trial.

Jurors awarded Meyer $1.43 million Thursday for lost wages and emotional distress, agreeing that she faced discrimination based on gender and sexual orientation. Jurors also found that she faced retaliation and that the university violated Iowa’s equal pay law.

The cost of the case is expected to grow. Meyer’s attorneys will be entitled to their fees, and are expected to ask a judge to triple her lost wages since the jury ruled the pay violation was “willful.”
