Atlantic Girls Golf Team wins 3A Regional at AGCC 5/15/2017

The Atlantic Girls Golf team claimed the Class 3A Region 2B Title on Monday at Atlantic Golf and Country Club. The Trojans shot a 337 to outpace Shenandoah in second with a 375.

Brooke Newell of Atlantic took medalist honors with a 77. Alyssa Ginther was 3rd with an 83. Other Atlantic scores were: McKenna DenBeste 88, Baylee Newell 89, Sara Fixmer 95, Mary Hayes 109.

High School girls golf teams will be competing in First Round Regional Meets around the state today to try and earn a trip to Regional Final Meets on May 22nd.  Competition sites for area teams are listed below and start vary by site.

Girls Regional Team Tennis matches took place on Saturday around the state. Most first round and quarterfinal round matches were completed in Class 1A and First round matches in 2A. Winners move on to the Regional Semifinal and Final round on Saturday, May 20th.

Atlantic boys tennis wins Preliminary Substate match over Ballard

The Atlantic boys tennis team won their Preliminary Substate match against Ballard on Saturday at North Polk.  The match featured singles play with the first team to win 5 matches claiming the victory. The Trojans took the match 5-1 with wins from Grant Podhajsky, Cooper McDermott, Nile Petersen, Kalob Flory, and Caleb Williams.

Atlantic now moves on to the Substate round at Kuemper Catholic on Saturday, May 20th at 9:00am.

In another match on Saturday Clarke defeated Creston 5-2.

Clarke will also head to Kuemper Catholic for the Substate round on May 20th. Kuemper Catholic will take on Clarke and Atlatnic will face Glenwood in the Substate matches. Winners will play in the State Team Quarterfinal one hour after the last Substate match.

Molina homers twice to help Cardinals beat Cubs

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Yadier Molina homered twice and Adam Wainwright threw seven shutout innings to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-0 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. Matt Carpenter also homered for St. Louis, which won for the eighth time in nine games. Chicago has lost three of four.

Molina recorded the third multi-homer game of his career. His last came on Aug. 21, 2011 at Wrigley Field. He drilled a two-run homer off Jake Arrieta (4-3) in the second inning and added a solo blast in the eighth.

Wainwright (3-3) allowed four hits in a 102-pitch stint. He struck out three and walked four. Carpenter’s two-run drive came in the third. He was 1-for-31 before the round-tripper against Arrieta, his friend and college teammate at TCU.

Carlos Martinez gets 2 hits, Cardinals beat Cubs 5-3

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez had two hits and an RBI, Tommy Pham kept up his strong start to the season and St. Louis beat the Chicago Cubs 5-3 on Saturday. In a rematch of the season opener, Martinez (3-3) again topped Jon Lester (1-2). Martinez allowed three runs, five hits and four walks over 6 2/3 innings, striking out seven.

Top Cubs prospect Ian Happ homered off Martinez in the seventh for his first hit in his major league debut. Martinez scored Pham on a squeeze bunt in the third inning. Lester tried to field the ball and flip it home, but the attempt came up short while Martinez took second with nobody covering.

Pham had two hits, two RBIs, a walk and a stolen base. The outfielder is batting .387 with seven extra-base hits in eight games since being recalled from Triple-A this month. Seung Hwan Oh pitched the ninth, giving up a two-out single before picking up his 10th save in 11 opportunities.
