Atlantic comes up short against West Marshall 3-2 in Regional Softball Final

Sports

July 10th, 2017 by admin

Atlantic came up just short of getting to the state tournament for the second straight year with a 3-2 loss to West Marshall on Monday night. The West Marshall Trojans got all 5 of their hits and all 3 of their runs in the third inning and it was just enough to get them to state for the first time since 2003.

Georgia Porter had the big hit with a 2 RBI single that brought in Ranae Schaper and Katie Price after both runners had advanced to second and third on a passed ball.

Atlantic would try to rally with two outs in the fifth getting two runners on before an RBI single by Baylee Newell. Atlantic would leave two on due to a great snag by West Marshall Shortstop Katie Price on a bloop by Alyssa Derby to end the inning.

Ally Anderson hit a solo homer in the 6th to close the gap to 1 but Atlantic couldn’t get anything else going. Atlantic Head Coach Terry Hinzmann felt it was a well played game that they just came up short in.

After making the program’s first ever trip to state last year and knocking on the door again, Coach Hinzmann said he’s proud of the mindset the team has developed.

Atlantic ends the season at 32-9. West Marshall improved to 33-6 and will head to Ft. Dodge for the 3A State Tournament.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Helio Castroneves dominated the IndyCar race Sunday at Iowa Speedway for his first victory since 2014. The 42-year-old Castroneves led 217 of 300 laps, giving powerhouse Team Penske its first victory on Iowa’s short oval in 11 tries.

It also was the 30th career win for Castroneves, the Brazilian who was winless since the first race of the Belle Isle doubleheader in Detroit in June 2014. J.R. Hildebrand was a career-best second, followed by Ryan Hunter-Reay, Will Power and Graham Rahal. Series leader Scott Dixon finished eighth, two weeks after winning at Road America.

Pham, DeJong, Voit homer as Lynn, Cardinals shutout Mets 6-0

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Tommy Pham, Paul DeJong and Luke Voit homered and Lance Lynn pitched seven innings of three-hit ball as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Mets 6-0 on Sunday.

It was Lynn’s longest outing since May 23, when he threw 123 pitches in eight scoreless innings in a 2-1 loss to Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers. Lynn’s two strikeouts is a season low, but he needed just 93 pitches while facing two batters over the minimum. Lynn (7-6) did not allow a runner past first and lowered his ERA to 3.61.

Trevor Rosenthal struck out the side in the eighth and John Brebbia pitched a scoreless ninth as the Cardinals finished a 6-4 homestand and moved into a tie with the Chicago Cubs for second place in the National League Central. Steven Matz (2-2) gave up five runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings, his shortest outing since June 3. He struck out a season-low one.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Longtime assistant football coach Bob Elliott has died following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 64. Iowa, where Elliott played and later coached, announced Sunday that he had died a day earlier.

Elliott spent 38 years as an assistant for a number of high-profile schools. He spent 11 years as an assistant under Hayden Fry with the Hawkeyes, and he also worked for Kansas State, Iowa State, San Diego State and Notre Dame.

Elliott spent the last five seasons under Brian Kelly with the Fighting Irish. He was set to become an off-the-field defensive analyst for Nebraska this fall.

Iowa cuts deer tags to maintain population, combat disease

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa is reducing the number of tags it gives deer hunters as part of an effort to maintain the state’s deer population while combating animal diseases. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources approved the move and it was finalized at a legislative rules meeting this month. It should not result in a reduction in the number of antlerless deer hunted in the state. Department officials note roughly 10,000 deer tags were not claimed in 2016.

The change will ultimately decrease available deer tags from a little over 74,500 to just over 72,100. It will be in effect for antlerless deer hunting that begins in September and runs through early next year. Officials say the setup should help combat reported cases of chronic wasting disease.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) — All-Star rookie Cody Bellinger drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the winning run in the 10th inning and the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to beat the Kansas City Royals 5-4 Saturday night for their fifth straight victory. Royals center fielder Lorenzo Cain was ejected in the seventh inning for arguing a called third strike.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Paul DeJong homered as part of a four-hit game and Adam Wainwright won his third consecutive start as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Mets 4-1 Saturday. Wainwright pitched six and two thirds innings, lasting into the seventh for the third time in his last four starts. Three of the five hits he allowed came in the seventh and he struck out seven, including the side in the sixth inning.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Dalton Sargeant won the ARCA Racing Series event at Iowa Speedway, holding off points leader Austin Theriault. The 19-year-old Sargeant, from Boca Raton, Florida, won for the second time this season in the No. 77 Cunningham Motorsports Ford.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — IndyCar powerhouse Team Penske has never won at Iowa Speedway, even though the open-wheel series has been running at the track for more than a decade. This offseason, Penske brought in the driver who last year executed perhaps the most impressive run that Iowa had ever seen. Josef Newgarden broke an IndyCar record in Iowa for Ed Carpenter Racing, leading 282 out of 300 laps. Newgarden will return Sunday, this time in the Number 2 car for Penske.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — The IndyCar series has penalized Scott Dixon and his Number 9 team after they won at Road America on June 25th. The series announced Saturday that the Chip Ganassi Racing team was cited for three minor violations after Dixon’s Honda entered the track roughly a minute after the end of a morning warmup practice ahead of the Kohler Grand Prix in Wisconsin. Dixon is scheduled to run in Sunday’s Iowa Corn 300.
