Mark Rudner, the Big Ten’s Senior Associate Commissioner, has compiled 31 Big Ten basketball schedules, and this latest one may have been the most difficult.
Between the regular season ending one week earlier, to allow for the Big Ten tournament to be played at Madison Square Garden, the addition of FOX as a TV partner and a host of facility conflicts, there was no shortage of things to navigate and consider.
From Jan. 2-Feb.25, in fact, there will be at least one Big Ten conference game on all but four days.
The four TV partners (BTN, CBS, ESPN & FOX) are more than any other conference, and trail only the NFL (5).
Here’s a handful of notable items regarding the 2017-18 conference schedule:
1. Big Ten play tips Friday, Dec. 1. Every team will play two conference games Dec. 1-5, before returning to non-conference play until conference action resumes Tuesday, Jan. 2.
2. Big Ten tournament is held a week earlier, and at Madison Square Garden. Instead of its usual second week of March date, the tournament will open Wednesday, Feb. 28 and crown a champion Sunday, March 4. The Big Ten couldn’t reserve the World’s Most Famous Arena for its usual dates (March 7-11), due to the Big East tournament.
3. Monday and Friday night games. FOX will carry games Monday and Friday nights, off nights in the past, meaning the Big Ten will play on every day of the week. A reasonable question: Were coaches, athletic directors and presidents against Friday night games?
4. Single-day preps. Due to the condensed conference slate and the juggling of men’s and women’s schedules, among other things, teams will play two games in three days, allowing just one day of preparation. There are 34 instances of single-day prep games.
5. Three straight road games. In previous seasons, the conference avoided having teams play more than two consecutive road games. This season, teams will play three in a row away from home.
Iowa will open Big 10 play on December 2nd hosting Penn State and then will be at Indiana on December 4th. The Hawkeyes next Big 10 game won’t be until they host Michigan on January 2nd.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Alex Gordon hit a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth after Oakland tied it in the bottom of the eighth, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Athletics 7-6 Wednesday. Alcides Escobar doubled to start the ninth against Blake Treinen, matching his season high with three hits. Then Gordon delivered his second run-scoring single of the series finale.
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — European golfer Suzann Pettersen has pulled out of this weekend’s Solheim Cup because of a back injury. Pettersen says she couldn’t guarantee she’d overcome a slipped disk in time for the biennial tournament between the U.S. and Europe, which starts Friday.
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs broke camp at Western Missouri on Wednesday as they prepare to depart for their second preseason game. While there are two mutual options and both sides have expressed interest in a new deal, nothing is in place for the Chiefs to return to the college campus next season.

BOSTON (AP) — Xander Bogaerts had three hits, Hanley Ramirez, Sandy Leon and Jackie Bradley Jr. all added two RBIs and the Boston Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-4 on Tuesday night. Boston blew the game open courtesy of a wild fifth inning, tallying eight hits and eight runs against Cardinals starter Mike Leake and reliever Matt Bowman. It came an inning after the Red Sox turned their first triple play in six years .
The Red Sox have won 11 of their last 13. Rick Porcello (7-14) was mostly able to cruise, giving up eight hits and three runs over seven innings to pick up the victory. He has won his past three starts after going winless for more than a month.
Leake (7-11) got the loss and has failed to win in his last four starts. He has yielded 28 hits and 15 earned runs in 15 1/3 innings over his last three outings.
The Iowa basketball team completed a trip to Europe with a 4-0 record after an 88-49 win over the Vicenza Al-Stars in Italy. The Hawkeyes won despite making only four of 21 from three point range. The team will spend the final two days of the trip sight seeing. Freshman center Luka Garza had 24 points and 14 rebounds and sophomore forward Tyler Cook also had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Cam Gallagher hit a grand slam for his first career home run and second big league hit, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Oakland Athletics 6-2 on Monday night. Gallagher’s shot into the left-field seats in the sixth inning marked the first grand slam by a Royals rookie since Paulo Orlando connected in the first game of a doubleheader against Tampa Bay on July 7, 2015.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Cornhuskers’ athletics department plans to fund a new scholarship program for nonathletes. University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Ronnie Green says Nebraska Athletics will contribute $5 million annually. The first scholarships will be awarded in time for the 2018-19 school year.
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The two quarterbacks competing for the starting job at Kansas happen to be roommates and best of friends. Carter Stanley is the sophomore who started three games last season, while Peyton Bender is the transfer who began his career at Washington State. Kansas coach David Beaty has been in no hurry to appoint a starting quarterback.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Joey Gallo’s 33rd homer of the season and a second straight strong outing from Martin Perez lifted the Texas Rangers over the Detroit Tigers in Arlington. Perez trailed 2-0 just two batters into the game but gave up no more runs in Texas’ 6-2 victory.
