QBs undecided, Rugamba out for opener at Iowa

Sports

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa will face Wyoming’s Josh Allen, one of the nation’s most talented quarterbacks, without one of its starting cornerbacks in its opener.

Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz says sophomore Manny Rugamba will be suspended for the Sept. 2 home game against the Cowboys because of an offseason violation of team policy.

Rugamba is one of two new starting cornerbacks this season for Iowa, which lost Desmond King and Greg Mabin to the NFL.

Ferentz said Michael Ojemudia will move into a starting spot for the opener along with first-teamer Joshua Jackson, adding that freshman defensive back Matt Hankins will likely see time as well.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Yangervis Solarte homered and drove in a career-high six runs, Austin Hedges also went deep and the San Diego Padres beat the St. Louis Cardinals 12-4 on Tuesday night.

Solarte hit his homer a projected 455 feet over the right-field bullpen in the eighth inning to cap his career night. The Padres had scored six runs over their previous four games combined.

Solarte capitalized on starter Lance Lynn’s lack of control with a three-run double in the second. Lynn needed 64 pitches to get through the first three innings. He hit two batters, including opposing starter Clayton Richard, ahead of Solarte.

Hedges’ three-run homer off Zach Duke capped a six-run seventh inning that also included three runs off Matt Bowman (3-5). It was Hedges’ first homer since Aug. 8.

Richard allowed three homers and four runs in 5 2/3 innings despite entering the game with the NL’s best groundball percentage at 59.5 percent. Craig Stammen (1-2) got one out in the sixth for the victory.

New Volleyball season begins tonight for Atlantic

Sports

August 22nd, 2017 by admin

The Atlantic Trojan Volleyball team is set to open up the new season tonight at home for a quadrangular. The Trojans are looking to improve on their 4-28 record a year ago and will be using a mix of youth and experience to try to accomplish that.

The Trojans lost their kill-leader from last year Catherine Leonard to graduation but do bring back their second and third leaders in that category in Cheyenne Elliot and Sidney Svoboda.

The Trojans will also need to replace the setter position with the graduation of Megan Behrends. It will have to be an inexperienced player at the varsity level to fill that roll.

Atlantic had some success during the summer with a strong showing at the Iowa State team camp and have had a number of other off season workouts and scrimmages to prepare for the year.

The Trojans will welcome in CAM, ACGC, and Earlham for the opening quad tonight at the Atlantic High School Gymnasium. Action is set to begin at 5:00pm.
