IRVING, Texas – The Big 12 Conference announced today that Iowa State senior linebacker Joel Lanning and senior quarterback Kyle Kempt were named Big 12 Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, respectively.
Lanning was sensational in Iowa State’s 38-31 upset win over No. 3 Oklahoma in Norman on Saturday. Playing on both sides of the ball, Lanning totaled 78 snaps (57 on defense, 13 on offense, eight on special teams).
Lanning, a native of Ankeny, Iowa, recorded eight tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery deep inside ISU territory to halt an OU scoring drive.
On offense, Lanning rushed for 35 yards (nine carries) and threw for 25 yards (2-of-3).
He currently ranks sixth nationally in tackles per game at 10.8, recording the most tackles in a game by a Big 12 player this season with 20 vs. Texas.
In his first career start, Kempt was outstanding for the Cyclone offense. He completed 18 of his 24 attempts through the air for 343 yards and three touchdowns. He led four Iowa State touchdown drives that were 70 yards or more, including a 94-yard march.
Kempt, a native of Massillon, Ohio, did a fantastic job of distributing the ball, finding seven different ISU targets. All three of his touchdown passes were in the second half, helping ISU erase an 11-point deficit.
With his 300-plus yard passing performance, Kempt and Jacob Park become the only two quarterbacks in Iowa State history to throw for 300 yards or more in a game in the same season.
NEW HAVEN, CT – Iowa State senior LB/QB was named the Walter Camp FBS National Defensive Player of the Week, announced today by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.
The Walter Camp Football Foundation is in its 14th season of noting outstanding weekly performances in college football. The recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Foundation.
Lanning is the fourth Cyclone to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors and the first since Jordan Harris in 2015.

HOUSTON (AP) — Alex Smith threw for 324 yards and three touchdowns to help the Kansas City Chiefs remain undefeated with a 42-34 victory over the Houston Texans on Sunday night in a game where J.J. Watt broke his left leg.
Deshaun Watson’s 48-yard touchdown pass got the Texans within six early in the fourth quarter before Smith extended the lead for Kansas City (5-0) to 32-20 on a 10-yard pass to De’Anthony Thomas with about 9 minutes left. Tyreek Hill padded the lead when he returned a punt 82 yards for a touchdown.
Watson threw for 261 yards and five touchdowns, but the Texans (2-3) failed to recreate the magic they found last week when they scored a franchise-record 57 points in a victory over Tennessee.
Watt, the three-time Defensive Player of the Year, was injured in the first quarter and the team announced that he sustained a tibial plateau fracture, but didn’t provide any details on how long he’ll be out. The defensive end returned this season after missing the last 13 games last year after his second back surgery.
The Texans cut their deficit when Watson threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Fuller in the third quarter. But the 2-point conversion failed, leaving them down 23-13.
Kansas City’s Charcandrick West caught two touchdown passes and Travis Kelce had eight receptions for 98 yards in the first half, but didn’t return after halftime and the team said he was being evaluated for a concussion.
The Chiefs were up by six when Smith found West on an 8-yard touchdown pass to make it 13-0 in the second quarter. Houston rookie D’Onta Foreman fumbled two plays later to give Kansas City the ball right back and the Chiefs tacked on a field goal.
Foreman stepped out of one tackle before plowing over Marcus Peters as he tried to tackle him before two other Chiefs finally brought him down after a 25-yard gain that got Houston to the 10 on the Texans’ next drive. The Texans cut it to 16-7 when Watson found DeAndre Hopkins in the back of the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown pass with about two minutes left in the first half.
Smith then connected with West again, this time on a 4-yard TD pass to put the Chiefs up 23-7 at halftime.
The Chiefs led 3-0 early after a 35-yard field goal by Harrison Butker on their first drive. Watt was injured on the play before the field goal and fell to the ground while being blocked. Watt remained on his hands and knees for a couple of minutes while trainers checked on him.
They flipped him onto his back and were looking at his left leg. He was then helped to his feet and looked to be in a lot of pain and didn’t appear to be able to put any weight on the leg as he was helped off the field by two Texans officials. He remained on the sideline under a tent for a few minutes before being taken to the locker room on a cart and then taken by ambulance to the hospital.
Butker added another field goal early in the second quarter to make it 6-0.
Kansas City rookie Kareem Hunt had 29 carries for 107 yards to give him four 100-yard rushing games this season.
Hopkins had four receptions for 52 yards with three touchdowns after catching two late scoring passes when the game was out of reach.

Iowa native Shawn Johnson is appearing on a T-V series that opens its second season tomorrow (Tuesday), combining outdoor adventure with venture capitalism. At just 24, Johnson has won Olympic gold as a gymnast, the mirrorball trophy on “Dancing with the Stars,” and her first book was a New York Times best seller. Her latest project is called “Adventure Capitalists.” “What the show entails is kind of like ‘Shark Tank’ meets the outdoors or ‘Survivor’ almost,” Johnson says. “It’s funny because it’s the same concept as ‘Shark Tank’ but when the person pitches us their product, we actually go test it outside, do crazy things with it and then offer and negotiate a deal.”
The products are typically some sort of rugged outdoor gear, ranging from mountain bikes to kayaks. “I thought it was a perfect combination of business and fun and adventure and risk,” Johnson says. “I’m an adrenaline junkie so it was drawing me in with all of that and I thought it’s the perfect fit for me.” While some may question the business credentials of a person her age, remember, Johnson starred on “Celebrity Apprentice” in 2015 when it was hosted by the man who’s now the president of the United States. “I started my career when I was 12 years old and I’ve kind of grown up in the business world, negotiating contracts and deals,” Johnson says. “It’s a little bit different from venture capital but I’ve learned a lot. My husband has worked in venture capital before as well, so it’s something I’ve understood and been a part of for a while.”
Johnson first rose to global fame in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide watched as the then-16-year-old from West Des Moines won four medals, including gold, on the balance beam. Earlier this year, she was inducted into the Gymnasts Hall of Fame for her years of achievements. “Gymnastics will always be a part of my life,” Johnson says. “Whether it’s coaching during the summer, I do a lot of camps and clinics and work on the technical side. I go to the huge competitions and I’ve been watching world championships lately live on YouTube and it’s part of who I am. I’ll always be involved.”
Johnson says much of her time is spent working in social and digital media, and running a YouTube channel with her pro football player husband. She and Andrew East maintain homes in Los Angeles and Nashville. Season Two of “Adventure Capitalists” debuts Tuesday at 9 PM/Central on CNBC.
