Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Logan Morrison, Steven Souza Jr. and Adeiny Hechavarria each went deep and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Kansas City Royals 5-3 Wednesday night for their latest series victory. The Rays took two out of three and have won three consecutive series.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Domingo Santana and Jonathan Villar homered in the sixth inning, and center fielder Keon Broxton made a leaping catch over the wall for the final out in the Milwaukee Brewers’ 6-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. Corey Knebel pitched the ninth for his 30th save. He allowed a leadoff single to Yadier Molina, struck out the next two batters, and then watched Broxton snag Randal Grichuk’s deep blast to end the game.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Browns have traded offensive lineman Cam Erving, a former first-round pick, to the Kansas City Chiefs. Cleveland is getting a fifth-round pick for Erving, the No. 19 overall selection in 2015 who was a disappointment for the Browns. They tried him at center, guard and tackle, but the 6-foot-5, 313-pounder struggled at each spot.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves have named Scott Roth as the coach of the inaugural Iowa Wolves G-League team. The Timberwolves announced the hiring on Wednesday. Roth will oversee coaching of the team after the Timberwolves purchased the minor league team in Des Moines.

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Domingo Santana and Jonathan Villar homered in the sixth inning, and center fielder Keon Broxton made a leaping catch over the wall for the final out in the Milwaukee Brewers’ 6-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.

Corey Knebel pitched the ninth for his 30th save. He allowed a leadoff single to Yadier Molina, struck out the next two batters, and then watched Broxton snag Randal Grichuk’s deep blast to end the game.

Chase Anderson (8-3) gave up two hits – both homers – in six innings, three earned runs, struck out six and walked two to improve to 4-0 in nine starts at Miller Park this season.

Santana hit his 22nd homer of the season and Villar’s was his 10th, giving Milwaukee a franchise-record nine players with at least 10 homers in a season.

St. Louis fell 2 1/2 games behind the second-place Brewers in the NL Central despite two home runs from Tommy Pham.

Browns trade OL Cam Erving to Chiefs for fifth-round pick

CLEVELAND (AP) – The Browns have traded offensive lineman Cam Erving, a former first-round pick, to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Cleveland is getting a fifth-round pick for Erving, the No. 19 overall selection in 2015 who was a disappointment for the Browns. They tried him at center, guard and tackle, but the 6-foot-5, 313-pounder struggled at each spot.

Erving has been sidelined with a calf injury in recent weeks and limited in practice.

He started 13 games last season, 12 at center and one at right tackle. Cleveland’s offensive line was ravaged by injuries last year, but the Browns still managed to finish second in the NFL by averaging 4.9 yards per attempt.

Erving made 42 consecutive starts at Florida State, where he started as a defensive lineman before moving to offensive tackle. Later, he was switched to center and played well for the Seminoles.

Mariners bolster staff, get RHP Mike Leake from Cardinals

SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Mariners are attempting to bolster their beleaguered starting rotation in the midst of the AL wild-card race by acquiring right-hander Mike Leake from the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Mariners and Cardinals made the trade Wednesday, the second time this summer the Mariners have acquired a starting pitcher from the Cardinals. Seattle previously traded for Marco Gonzales. Seattle acquired Leake, cash and international slot money from the Cardinals for minor league infielder Rayder Ascanio.

Leake will join a Seattle rotation that has struggled to produce quality outings over the past month while dealing with injuries to James Paxton and Felix Hernandez. Leake is 7-12 with a 4.21 ERA and is a proven veteran to add to Seattle’s rotation. But he has struggled since the All-Star break, going 1-5 with a 6.90 ERA in nine starts since July 14.

Leake is under contract through the 2020 season with an option for 2021.

New Chiefs linebacker Ragland could fit into mix soon

Sports

August 30th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Former Alabama standout Reggie Ragland reported to the Chiefs but was not on the practice field Tuesday, one day after the Buffalo Bills shipped the linebacker to Kansas City for a fourth-round draft pick.

Ragland was injured all of last season and had fallen out of favor in Buffalo, which is in the midst of switching from a 3-4 to a 4-3 defense. The Chiefs play a 3-4 similar to what the Bills ran with Rex Ryan when they chose Ragland in the second round of the 2016 draft.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid would not say when he expects Ragland to make it on the field. The Chiefs play their preseason finale Thursday night against Tennessee. Reid did say that kicker Cairo Santos, who has missed most of training camp with a groin injury, could try field goals against the Titans. But backup Sam Ficken would continue to handle kickoffs.

Matt Carpenter homers, Cardinals beat up on Brewers 10-2

Sports

August 30th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Matt Carpenter hit a two-run homer and Luke Voit drove in four runs, backing Luke Weaver’s 10-strikeout night in a 10-2 win Tuesday over the Milwaukee Brewers. Carpenter’s shot to right in the fifth had added importance for the third baseman after he had pledged $10,000 for every home run that he hit the rest of the season to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. The Galveston, Texas native looked up and pointed two fingers toward the night sky as he touched the plate to extend the Cardinals’ lead to 9-1.

St. Louis chased Matt Garza (6-8) with one out in the fourth. The right-hander walked five and allowed six runs, though only three were earned after the Brewers committed two errors in the third.

The loss dropped the second-place Brewers to 3 1/2 games back of the NL Central-leading Cubs, who won on Tuesday.
