Chiefs owner sued over New Mexico investment deal

Sports

September 4th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The owner of the Kansas City Chiefs is being accused in a lawsuit of improperly receiving hundreds of millions in state investment money through a kickback deal with New Mexico officials.

The Kansas City Star reports Sunday the New Mexico State Investment Council filed the lawsuit late last month against Clark Hunt and HFV Asset Management over the politically influenced investment deals. Hunt didn’t comment to the newspaper on the lawsuit Sunday morning. Hunt’s father, Lamar, founded the Chiefs franchise and is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The lawsuit says Hunt made a deal 12 years ago with two men with political connections who promised to steer New Mexico investment money to a hedge fund in exchange for payments. Hunt was a partner in the hedge fund.

New Mexico awarded $300 million to the hedge fund and paid millions in management fees. The lawsuit said one of the investment funds lost $13 million during the period. “Hunt sought to gain unfair advantage by paying for influence over the process,” New Mexico officials said in the lawsuit.

The accusations are tied to the pay-to-play scandal that took place during administration of former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson. New Mexico has already negotiated more than $30 million in settlements related to the pay-to-play investment scandal.

Cards power past Giants on homers by Bader, DeJong, Martinez

Sports

September 4th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Harrison Bader hit a tiebreaking homer leading off the sixth after Madison Bumgarner homered in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants 7-3 on Sunday to gain ground again in the wild-card race.

Paul DeJong hit a solo homer in the fourth for the first St. Louis hit and Jose Martinez followed with a drive to nearly the same spot over the left-field fence. It was the seventh time the Cardinals hit consecutive homers this year.

Luke Weaver (4-1) struck out nine over seven innings to just miss a third straight start with double-digit Ks, helping St. Louis move within three games of Colorado for the NL’s second wild card.

Iowa State holds off Northern Iowa 42-24

Sports

September 3rd, 2017 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) – It wasn’t the smoothest of openers for Iowa State. But it went down as a relatively comfortable win for the Cyclones – one they won’t look down on after last year’s opening debacle against Northern Iowa. Jacob Park threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns and Iowa State, aided by a pair of interception returns for TDs, beat the FCS Panthers 42-24 in the season opener for both teams Saturday.

David Montgomery ran for 82 yards and two scores for the Cyclones, who scored 21 straight points to hold off the Panthers just a year after losing to Northern Iowa. “I thought it was a good team win. Was it perfect? No,” Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. “The thing I was most impressed with was that we didn’t panic.”

Willie Harvey (12 yards) and Kamari Cotton-Moya (18 yards) returned Eli Dunne picks for scores in the first quarter. Montgomery then closed the first half with an 8-yard TD run and opened the second with a 3-yard score to make it 28-10.

The Cyclones essentially put it away midway through the third quarter on a 9-yard TD pass from Park to Marchie Murdock that put them ahead 35-10. Iowa State’s Allen Lazard caught eight passes for 108 yards to set a new school record for career receptions with 178. Dunne was 23 of 38 passing for 259 yards with three TDs and three interceptions.

Chiefs put Hali on PUP list, send Spiller packing to make 53

Sports

September 2nd, 2017 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have placed linebackers Tamba Hali and Dadi Nicolas on the physically unable to perform list and released veteran running back C.J. Spiller.

Kansas City also traded offensive lineman Isaiah Battle to Seattle on Saturday for a conditional 2018 draft pick and placed running back Spencer Ware and cornerback Ashton Lampkin on injured reserve.

Hali, a five-time Pro Bowl selection, is dealing with balky knees. Nicolas is coming off a knee injury last season. Spiller was the biggest surprise among 30 players who were cut. Not only did he appear rejuvenated after a long history of injuries, his release left the Chiefs with rookie Kareem Hunt and Charcandrick West as the only running backs on their roster.

Iowa roughs up Allen, Wyoming 24-3

Sports

September 2nd, 2017 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Nate Stanley threw three touchdown passes in his first career start and Iowa beat Wyoming 24-3 on Saturday, its 16th win in its last 17 openers. Noah Fant caught two of those TD tosses for the Hawkeyes (1-0), who held the Cowboys (0-1) to just 59 yards rushing on 30 tries.

Stanley’s first career touchdown throw, which went to Fant on fourth-and-2, put Iowa ahead 7-3. Stanley connected with Fant for a 27-yard score following a bizarre muffed punt by Wyoming, and he hit Nick Easley from 45 yards out to give the Hawkeyes a 21-3 edge midway through the third quarter.

Josh Allen was 23 of 40 passing for 174 yards and two picks for the Cowboys, whose inability to run the ball left Allen without much space to work with. Allen threw an interception deep in Iowa territory with 11:32 left, and he threw another one right to lineman Brady Reiff after being blitzed with 4:36 left.

Akrum Wadley rushed for 116 yards for Iowa.
