Atlantic football hopes to carry momentum on to Glenwood

Sports

September 28th, 2017 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans are hoping to carry some momentum from their exciting Homecoming win over Creston Orient-Macksburg into this week’s contest at Glenwood (4-1). The Trojans (3-2) will be on the other end of a Homecoming game this week as the road team for Glenwood’s festivities. Atlantic gutted out an overtime win over Creston O-M last week and found a way to get the ball to their play-makers on the edges.

Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott said that will be a key again this week against a tough Glenwood defense.

Glenwood Head Coach Cory Faust said in order to slow down the Trojan offense his team will need to tackle well in open space.

When the Rams have the ball, Coach McDermott says the Trojans will have to play disciplined and be ready to slow down Glenwood quarterback Andrew Blum.

Coach Faust said his team is playing well right now but they know they need to be ready to give their best effort against Atlantic.

We’ll have coverage of the game on KJAN Friday night. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call on AM1220, FM101.1, online at kjan.com, and on the KJAN Mobile App. You can also catch live streaming video on KJANTV. Catch a full interview with Coach McDermott on Trojan Preview at 4:45pm Friday. Our pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? gets the night started at 6:00pm followed by pregame at 6:30pm and kickoff at 7:30pm.

Russell homers, Cubs beat Cardinals 5-1 to clinch NL Central

Sports

September 28th, 2017 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Addison Russell hit a three-run homer and John Lackey pitched six strong innings as the Chicago Cubs clinched their second consecutive National League Central title with a 5-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night.

The Cubs reached the postseason for the third straight year for the first time since 1908. They are also the first defending World Series champion to win their division the next season since the 2009 Philadelphia Phillies and the first defending champion to reach the playoffs the next season since the Cardinals won the wild card in 2012.

The Cubs became the second visiting team to celebrate a title at Busch Stadium III. The 2009 Los Angeles Dodgers won the NLDS at St. Louis.

Lackey (12-11) retired the final 10 batters he faced. The former Cardinal struck out three and gave up two hits and two walks.

Six Cubs relievers combined for three scoreless innings of relief.

Cardinals deny Cubs from clinching

Sports

September 27th, 2017 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Tommy Pham and Randal Grichuk homered and drove in two runs each and the St. Louis Cardinals denied the Chicago Cubs a chance at clinching the NL Central with an 8-7 victory Tuesday night.

Matt Carpenter and Jedd Gyorko also homered for St. Louis, which remains 2 1/2 games behind the second Wild Card spot. Zach Duke (1-1) got the win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Juan Nicasio earned his fifth save.

The Cubs were seeking to clinch the Central division with either a win or a Milwaukee loss against Cincinnati, but the Brewers beat the Reds 7-6.

Cardinals right-hander Carlos Martinez allowed three runs (two earned) and four hits in 4 1/3 innings. Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta (14-10) allowed five runs (three earned) and six hits in three innings, his second shortest outing this season.
