Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The future of embattled Nebraska coach Mike Riley has been the hottest topic in the state and among Cornhusker fans everywhere this week. The Huskers are coming off a 56-14 loss to Ohio State that was their most lopsided defeat at home since 1949. Bill Moos was hired away from Washington State to be Nebraska’s athletic director. Moos will decide after the season whether to bring back Riley for a fourth year.

UNDATED (AP) — The same technological advances that tempt fans to stay home rather than heading to the stadium also make it easy for programs to start new college football traditions. Social media enables traditions to begin much sooner nowadays. The latest example is Florida getting fans to sing along to Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down” after the third quarter.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Raiders came into the season trying to chase the Kansas City Chiefs for AFC West dominance. The Raiders head into the first meeting between the rivals this season on a four-game losing streak and desperate for any kind of win. Oakland has lost its last five meetings against the Chiefs. It can ill afford another if the team wants to compete for a playoff berth.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Bill Snyder coached his first game as Kansas State’s head coach in 1989. Lincoln Riley was six years old. Snyder is oldest coach in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Riley is the youngest. Their teams will face off this week.

UNDATED (AP) — Wichita State’s move to the American Athletic Conference left the Missouri Valley looking like a one-bid league. Northern Iowa doesn’t seem like a team content to rely on the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers open the season at North Carolina, play in a Thanksgiving weekend tournament against Power Five teams, host UNLV and Xavier, and play Iowa State on a neutral floor.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have won 12 consecutive games against the AFC West heading into Thursday night’s game in Oakland. They’ve also won five straight and seven of eight against the Raiders. But nobody in the Kansas City locker room can put their finger on why the Chiefs have had such a run of divisional dominance.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs’ perfect start ended Sunday against Pittsburgh. Now, they must heal up in short order before facing Oakland on Thursday night. It is a particularly grueling turnaround considering the physical nature of the Chiefs’ game against the Steelers, one that left them with even more players on the injury list.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Philadelphia Eagles are No. 1 in the latest AP Pro32 poll. They received five of 12 first-place votes for 376 points in balloting by media members who regularly cover the NFL. Kansas City fell to No. 2 after its first loss. The Patriots jumped up to No. 3.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State lost the best point guard in school history to graduation in Monte Morris. The Cyclones compensated by signing freshman Lindell Wigginton, one of the most highly-touted recruits in program history. Iowa State will be without Morris for the first time in four years. But in Wigginton, who was the top-ranked prep player coming out of Canada, the Cyclones hope they’ve found a worthy successor.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa made it to the middle of October at 4-2 halfway through the season. How Iowa finishes over the next six weeks will determine whether 2017 will be a season to remember or one to forget. The schedule doesn’t get any easier either, starting with Saturday’s matchup at Northwestern.

UNDATED (AP) — Bill Moos will receive a payment of $1.25 million if he still is Nebraska’s athletic director at the end of 2022. He also is eligible for $500,000 in bonuses each year if the Cornhuskers’ teams achieve certain academic and on-field performance thresholds. His starting base salary starts at $1 million.

UNDATED (AP) — An AP survey finds that more than two dozen universities and conferences with major basketball programs responded to news of the sport’s bribery scandal by conducting internal reviews of their compliance operations. The arrests and details of a federal probe have triggered uncomfortable soul-searching across the sport.

Exira-EHK wins at Audubon to move on in Class 1A Region 4 Volleyball

Sports

October 17th, 2017 by admin

The Exira-EHK Spartans avenged an earlier loss to the Audubon Wheelers on Tuesday night in the first round of the Class 1A tournament 3-0.  The Spartans jumped out to a quick start in the first set and played with leads most of the first two sets on their way to the three set sweep 25-19, 25-20, 25-19.

Sophia Peppers came up big all night long for the Spartans as she seemed to find the right moments to get big points.  Peppers finished the match with 15 kills. Bailey Robertson had a great setting night for the Spartans as well and finished with 19 assists.

Audubon had taken a 2-0 win over Exira-EHK in tournament play back on September 16th in Guthrie Center.  Spartan Head Coach Hillary Runyan said they didn’t even talk about that previous loss and just went out and tried to play confident.

The Spartans improve to 15-17 on the season and will move on to the Region 4 Quarterfinals on Monday night.  The Spartans will play at Coon Rapids-Bayard at 7:00pm on Monday. The Crusaders picked up a 3-1 win over Glidden-Ralston in their opening match Tuesday.

Audubon sees their season end at 5-24.
