Midwest Sports Headlines: Chiefs lose to Raiders

Sports

October 20th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Derek Carr threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree on the final play after the game was extended by two straight defensive holding calls and the Raiders snapped a four-game losing streak with a 31-30 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. The game had a wild finish with Oakland having two apparent winning touchdowns wiped out by penalty and the Chiefs committing the two penalties that extended the game.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch has been ejected after shoving an official. Lynch came off the bench after quarterback Derek Carr was hit late by Kansas City’s Marcus Peters in the second quarter. Lynch got into the middle of a scuffle and ended up shoving line judge Julian Mapp.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa and Northwestern have underwhelming Big Ten records that can be taken with a grain of salt given the quality of the teams they’ve lost to. The Hawkeyes and Wildcats are about to get closer to finding out how good they truly are in 2017 _ as is often the case when these West division foes square off. Iowa will travel to face Northwestern after a bye week that followed an easy win over woeful Illinois.

UNDATED (AP) — Two of the Big 12’s improving teams meet when Iowa State plays at Texas Tech. The Cyclones have won consecutive conference games and have four wins overall. It’s their most victories since going 6-7 in 2012. Iowa State followed up an upset victory at Oklahoma with a 45-0 win over Kansas. Texas Tech was back in the Top 25 before losing at West Virginia. But the Red Raiders have four wins, one shy of last year’s total.

UNDATED (AP) — The running game has become increasingly important in the Big 12 this season _ with a host of talented young backs leading the way. Seven of the league’s top-rated rushers were underclassmen as the league reached the midway point of the season. They’re led by Oklahoma State’s Justice Hill, Iowa State’s David Montgomery and Oklahoma’s talented duo of Trey Sermon and Abdul Adams.

Raiders score on final play to beat Chiefs 31-30

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Derek Carr threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree on the final play after the game was extended by two straight defensive holding calls and the Oakland Raiders snapped a four-game losing streak with a 31-30 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night.

With their season on the line following the recent slump, Carr led an 85-yard touchdown drive in the final 2:25 to give the Raiders (3-4) the thrilling comeback win in a game they trailed by nine points heading into the fourth quarter.

Carr finished 29 for 52 for 417 yards and three touchdowns, with Amari Cooper catching 11 passes for 210 yards and two of the scores.

Alex Smith threw for 342 yards and three touchdowns but it wasn’t enough for the Chiefs (5-2). They lost consecutive games for the first time since Oct. 11-18, 2015, and had their 12-game winning streak in the AFC West snapped in a thrilling finish.

The Raiders had an apparent go-ahead touchdown pass to Jared Cook with 18 seconds left overturned when replay ruled he was down at the 1. An offensive pass interference on Michael Crabtree wiped another touchdown on the next play.

But holding calls on Ron Parker and Eric Murray set the stage for the final play. Carr hit Crabtree in the front corner of the end zone to tie it at 30. Giorgio Tavecchio won it with the extra point, setting off a celebration on a wild night that included Oakland running back Marshawn Lynch getting ejected in the second quarter for shoving an official.

HOT TEMPERS: The game took an odd turn midway through the second quarter after Kansas City’s Marcus Peters hit Carr late, angering the Raiders. Offensive linemen Kelechi Osemele and Donald Penn confronted Peters and Lynch sprinted off the Oakland sideline to join the fray. Lynch, a close friend of Peters, ended up shoving line judge Julian Mapp and getting ejected . Peters also was called for a personal foul on the play.

LONG DRIVE: After Marquette King pinned the Chiefs at their own 1 with a perfect punt early in the second quarter, Kansas City needed little time to turn the momentum. Smith hit Demarcus Robinson on a 33-yard pass on the first play of the drive. After a short run, Tyreek Hill beat David Amerson for a 64-yard touchdown pass that gave the Chiefs their first 99-yard drive since doing it Dec. 3, 2006, against Cleveland.

DEEP CONNECTION: Carr had not connected on a single deep ball to Amari Cooper all season before the two teamed twice for long TDs in the opening quarter. On the first, Cooper appeared to push Terrance Mitchell but the officials picked up the flag and gave Cooper the 38-yard TD . Later in the quarter Carr and Cooper connected on a 45-yard score, making Cooper the first Raiders receiver with two TD catches in the first quarter since Mervyn Fernandez in 1989.

KICKING WOES: The Raiders were hurt last week when a bad snap by Jon Condo led to a missed extra point by Giorgio Tavecchio in a 17-16 loss to the Chargers. That was Tavecchio’s first missed kick of any kind this season but he then had a 53-yarder blocked and missed a 45-yarder wide left in the second quarter. Tavecchio also had a false start on an extra point in the third quarter.

Atlantic hopes to cap season with marquee win

Sports

October 19th, 2017 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans (5-3, 3-3) will finish off the 2017 football season with a home game against the Harlan Cyclones (7-1, 6-0) on Friday night. The senior class was able to place their stamp on program improvement with a win last week at Carroll that guaranteed them the first winning season since 2012. They don’t want to stop there though, and will look to knock off the 6th ranked Cyclones to put an exclamation point on the season.

In order to get a win the Trojans will try to slow down Harlan star running back Nick Foss who has rushed for 1,464 yards on the season with 24 touchdowns. Foss has also caught 9 passes for 205 yards and three more scores. Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott said the Trojans know what he brings to the game.

Atlantic will counter with the passing game led by quarterback Jaxson Eden who has hit on 69% of his passes for 1,315 yards and 9 touchdowns.  Chase Mullenix has been a big play threat with 453 yards receiving and 2 touchdowns to go along with three rushing scores.  Coach McDermott said it will start up front on offense with the line being able to create some seams in the run game and being able to pass protect.

Harlan already knows their fate as they have locked up the District title but there is never any lack of motivation when the Trojans and Cyclones get together. Coach McDermott expects a great atmosphere for the game.

The Trojans and Cyclones are set for a 7:30pm kickoff at the Trojan Bowl Friday. Listen to a full interview with Coach McDermott on Trojan Preview at 4:45pm.

CAM travels to Fremont-Mills with playoff spot on the line

Sports

October 19th, 2017 by admin

The CAM Cougars (6-3, 4-2) football team will travel to Tabor on Friday night to face the Fremont-Mills Knights (6-2, 5-1) with a playoff spot on the line.  The winner will grab the runner-up spot in 8-Man District 7 behind the Sidney Cowboys. The Cougars put themselves in the position to win and get in with a big home win last week over Exira-EHK 58-47 in a shootout.

CAM has battled through a load of big injuries this season and Head Coach Joe Wollum said that has brought his team closer.

Fremont-Mills has put up some big offensive numbers behind star quarterback Mason Vanatta who has thrown for 1,073 yards and 14 touchdowns, and rushed for 826 yards and 16 more scores. Coach Wollum wants his defense to be able to slow down Vanatta and the Knights to give them a chance to win.

Injuries were an issue for the Knights early in the season as well but they have gotten healthier as the year progressed.  The offense has become more diverse for the Knights in recent weeks and F-M Head Coach Jeremy Christiansen says that is partly due to those early season struggles.

CAM has a dynamic quarterback of their own in senior Thomas Hensley. He leads the entire state in Total offense (rushing and passing) with 2,991 yards racked up to go along with a state-leading 49 touchdowns.  Coach Christiansen said he isn’t sure how you slow a player like Hensley down, but they want to try to contain him.

We’ll have coverage of the Cougars and Knights on KJAN with pregame at 6:30pm and kickoff at 7:00pm. We’ll start the night with our pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00pm. Catch the action on AM1220, FM101.1, online at kjan.com, on the KJAN mobile app, or live video on KJANTV. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call from Tabor.
