Ex-Univ. of Iowa wrestler released on bond in cheating case

Sports

November 2nd, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A former University of Iowa wrestler has been released on bond after appearing in court to face federal computer fraud charges in a large-scale academic misconduct scandal.

Trevor Graves appeared Thursday before a magistrate at the federal courthouse in Davenport. He was released but ordered to obey a curfew and other restrictions while awaiting trial.

Graves is accused of secretly installing devices known as keyloggers in university computers so that he could record what his professors typed and steal their login credentials.

He then allegedly accessed university systems to change grades on tests and assignments for himself and several classmates and to steal advanced copies of upcoming exams, from March 2015 through November 2016.

The 22-year-old Colorado native last participated on the Iowa wrestling team in the 2015-2016 season.

New Nebraska AD Moos: No plans for alcohol sales at stadium

Sports

November 2nd, 2017 by Ric Hanson

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — New Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos, who unsuccessfully tried to start beer sales in the general seating areas at Washington State’s football stadium, says he has no plans for alcohol sales at Memorial Stadium or the school’s other sports venues.

Moos said Thursday that Nebraska doesn’t need to sell alcohol. The athletic department makes money, the football stadium has sold out every home game since 1962 and the Huskers rank in the top 15 nationally in men’s basketball attendance.

Moos said he proposed beer sales to the general public at WSU’s Martin Stadium because he was seeking additional revenue streams for a financially strapped department. Alcohol already was available in suites and club seating areas.

WSU submitted a proposal to the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board in 2015 and never received approval.

Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali returns to practice

November 2nd, 2017 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali returned to practice for the first time since the end of last season, though it’s unclear when he will be activated from the physically unable to perform list.

Hali’s return Thursday begins a three-week window in which the Chiefs must decide whether to activate Hali or shut him down for the season. The 33-year-old Hali missed the offseason program and all of training camp to rest and rehabilitate his ailing knees.

The Chiefs, who visit Dallas on Sunday, could use Hali’s help after losing Dee Ford to a back injury in Monday night’s game against Denver. Ford has not practiced this week.

Fellow pass rusher Justin Houston has also been limited with a knee injury.

Stage is set for Wheelers and Hawks

Sports

The #2 Audubon Wheelers (10-0) host the #3 Remsen St. Mary’s Hawks (9-0) in the Quarterfinals of the 8-Man Football Playoffs on Friday night at Chiz Jones Field and it should be a terrific contest.

Audubon fought back from two scores down in the opening round to knock off Newell-Fonda 45-33. Remsen St. Mary’s cruised to a 58-13 win over Boyer Valley in round one. The Hawks fought their way through a very tough District 1 this season with wins over Newell-Fonda, Harris-Lake Park, and Graettinger Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire. Hawks Head Coach Ryan Hajek hopes the grind of the regular season has prepared his team for this moment.

The Hawks are a similar team in style to the Wheelers, they like to run the ball first but can put it in the air efficiently as well. Star running back Canaan Cox has piled up 1,549 yards on the ground and 31 touchdowns. He is averaging 10.8 yards per carry and also has 3 receiving scores to his name. Cox moved into the district this year from North Carolina where he led the state’s independent class and was third overall in the state with 2,343 yards rushing and 37 touchdowns. Quarterback Derrick Shorg is another weapon, piling up 1,256 yards through the air with 17 touchdowns and just 5 interceptions.  His favorite target is Carter Kuchel who has pulled in 33 receptions for 773 yards and 11 touchdowns. As the numbers show balance and depth have been a key for the Hawks all season.

Audubon has also used great balance to get them to an undefeated mark. Quarterback Tyler Reibhoff has 884 yards passing with 15 touchdowns to go along with 1,114 rushing yards and 27 scores. Nolan Smith has rushed for 872 yards and 23 scores. Josh Lange has a combined 10 touchdowns rushing and receiving. Different players have stepped up for Audubon in key moments and Co-Head Coach Sean Birks likes how unified the team is right now.

The win last week for the Wheelers was a big stress reliever after having been knocked out in the first round of the playoffs the previous three years. Coach Birks thinks that win can help his team relax and just play their game this week.

We’ll have coverage of the Wheelers and Hawks on Friday night on KJAN. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call from Chiz Jones field with a 6:00pm pre-game and 7:00pm kickoff. Tune in on AM1220, FM101.1, online at kjan.com, or on the KJAN mobile app. After the game we’ll have post-game coverage followed by the Iowa High School Scoreboard Show from 10:00pm-11:30pm.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs insist they are ready to face the Cowboys offense regardless of whether Zeke Elliott is in the backfield. The star running back is poised to begin his six-game suspension unless the courts intervene again. Meanwhile, the Chiefs’ run defense has been gutted by just about every opponent it has faced this season.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska kicker Drew Brown will go into the game against Northwestern on Saturday tied with half-brother Kris Brown with 57 career field goals. Kris set a number of records while winning two national titles with the Cornhuskers in the 1990s and went on to kick 12 years in the NFL. He says he is proud of Drew’s accomplishments. Drew said he became a kicker because he looked up to Kris.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska is among the schools that have conducted internal reviews into their compliance operations in response to the federal investigation of malfeasance in men’s college basketball. University spokeswoman Teresa Paulsen wrote in an email to The Associated Press that no violations were found. When asked on Sept. 28, Nebraska coach Tim Miles said his program had not done an internal review. He said Wednesday that a review began shortly after Sept. 28.

UNDATED (AP) — Duke is No. 1 in The Associated Press preseason poll for the second straight season and ninth time as a program, matching rival North Carolina for most all-time. Led by senior guard Grayson Allen and freshman phenom Marvin Bagley III, the Blue Devils received 33 of 65 first-place votes from a national media panel in the AP Top 25. No. 2 Michigan State received 13 first-place votes, No. 3 Arizona had 18 and No. 4 Kansas had one.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Jeremy Maclin came to Baltimore looking to bounce back from an injury-marred, unproductive season in Kansas City. His tenure with the Ravens has thus far been an unexpected flashback. Maclin missed two games with a sore shoulder and has 19 catches for 212 yards through the first half of the season.

Iowa’s furbearer season begins Nov. 4

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

November 1st, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Iowa’s furbearer season opens Nov. 4, and the outlook for 2017 is good as populations are stable to increasing statewide. Vince Evelsizer, furbearer biologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, said that while prospects for a good season are there, the number of participants usually follows the fur market. “When prices are good, we have higher participation. When the market is forecasted to be down, like it is again this year, so is participation. But that lack of competition provides an opportunity to introduce someone new to trapping or someone who’s been out of the sport for a while to come back,” he said.

The recent peak in trapping came in 2013 when nearly 21,000 Iowans purchased a furharvester license. In 2016, about 14,500 furharvester licenses were sold. Evelsizer expects participation in the 2017 season will be similar to 2016. “This is another opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, enjoy trapping, even if the market isn’t great,” he said.

Furharvester population trends and market forecast

Muskrats – Population, particularly in northern Iowa, is doing well. Prices likely similar to 2016.

Raccoons – Population is strong, but market forecasts are low. Best opportunity is for large adults in prime condition – from Thanksgiving through December.

Coyotes – Population and price is steady. Coyote fur price has been buoyed by the international trim trade.

Beaver – Population is trending up slightly but varies by region

Mink – Population is steady.

Bobcats – Population is expanding in western and eastern Iowa and increasing in numbers. Prices are similar to 2016.

Otters – Population is stable to slightly increasing. Prices are similar to 2016.

Regulations and Ethics

There are no new regulations for 2017. Furharvesters must have a valid furharvester license and habitat fee to hunt or trap all furbearers except coyotes and groundhogs. Coyotes and groundhogs may be hunted with a hunting or furharvester license. Furharvesters are reminded to respect private property, property boundaries, and the 200 yard separation distance from occupied dwellings or driveways. All traps must be checked every 24 hours, except those which are placed entirely underwater and designed drown the animal immediately.

Otters and bobcats

Furharvesters are required to contact a conservation officer within seven days of taking an otter or bobcat to receive a CITES tag which must remain with the animal until it is sold. They are also asked to turn in the lower jaw or skull of all otters and bobcats harvested to the Iowa DNR, which is used for a population and harvest monitoring.

Coyotes versus wolves

While there are no known wolves currently in Iowa, an occasional wolf will wander through. The Iowa DNR has information at http://www.iowadnr.gov/Conservation/Iowas-Wildlife/Occasional-Wildlife-Visitors showing how to distinguish coyotes from wolves. “Wolves are state and federally protected. If it looks too big or something doesn’t look right, take a second or third look before pulling the trigger,” he said.  “Be sure of the target before taking the shot.” While wolves are protected, bears and mountain lions are not. “We encourage anyone who comes across a bear or mountain lion to enjoy the incredible experience but leave them alone unless there is a safety threat,” Evelsizer said.
