Atlantic girls come up short to Creston

Sports

December 8th, 2017 by admin

The Atlantic girls basketball team came up just a bit short to Creston on Friday night at Atlantic High School 59-52. The Trojans trailed by 2 at the end of the first quarter and were down 6 at half.  Atlantic was within 42-36 at the end of the third quarter. A back and forth finish would see Creston hold.

Atlantic got within 4 points on two different occasions in the fourth quarter but couldn’t get that next timely basket to get over the hump.

Brielle Baker led all scorers with 31 points for the Panthers. Kelsey Fields dropped in 21 points and had 13 rebounds for the Panthers who improved to 3-2.

Atlantic was led by 16 points from McKenzie Waters and 13 from Cheyenne Elliott. The Trojans fall to 1-4 with the loss.

Campbell named AP Big 12 Coach of the Year, 2 Cyclones on First Team

Sports

December 8th, 2017 by admin

Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield is the unanimous pick as The Associated Press Big 12 offensive player of the year for the second time in three seasons, and Sooners linebacker Ogbonnia Okoronkwo is the league’s top defensive player.

The playoff-bound Sooners have six first-team picks on the AP all-league team announced Friday. Mayfield, the AP player of the year and the Heisman Trophy favorite, was also the league’s top offensive player in 2015. Oklahoma big-play receiver Dede Westbrook took the honor last year.

Iowa State’s Matt Campbell was named the league’s top coach. The Cyclones have their first winning season since 2009, including wins over top-five teams Oklahoma and TCU.

West Virginia junior quarterback Will Grier, a former Florida transfer, was named the league’s top newcomer

The 2017 AP All-Big 12 team, as selected by a panel of 19 sports writers and sportscasters who regularly cover the league, with players listed alphabetically with name, school, height, weight, class and hometown. (“u-” denotes unanimous selections):

Midwest Sports brief 12/8/17

Sports

December 8th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Freshman Lindell Wigginton scored 24 points and Iowa State held off rival Iowa 84-78, its eighth straight home win over the Hawkeyes. Nick Weiler-Babb had 15 points and 10 assists for the Cyclones (6-2), who’ve won six in a row after a 0-2 start.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Klint Carlson scored 24 points, Spencer Haldeman added 10, including a key 3-pointer with 25 seconds left, to help Northern Iowa beat UT Arlington 62-58. Northern Iowa (7-2) led 59-52 with three minutes remaining before Kaelon Wilson and Kevin Hervey each made a 3-pointer to pull the Mavericks to 59-58 with 50 seconds left.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs and Raiders are both 6-6 and tied atop the AFC West with four games left in their season. So to say that their meeting Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium is important would be an understatement. Kansas City is trying to turn things around after losing four in a row, while Oakland has won two straight and three of four to get into contention.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid turned over some of the play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Matt Nagy last week, and the immediate returns were good. But that wasn’t enough for Reid to guarantee Nagy another shot this weekend.
