CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Clayton Custer scored 11 points and Ben Richardson hit a big 3-pointer to spark a late run as Loyola-Chicago rallied for a 56-50 victory over Northern Iowa on Sunday afternoon.
The Ramblers (12-4, 2-2 Missouri Valley Conference), who snapped a five-game skid on the road in league play, trailed 48-47 when Richardson connected from long range to ignite a game-ending 9-2 run over the final 3:04. Wyatt Lohaus’ basket pulled Northern Iowa (8-8, 0-4) within 52-50 with 1:54 left to play, but the Panthers were held scoreless from there.
Bennett Koch totaled 17 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots for UNI, while Tywhon Pickford added 15 points and 11 rebounds and Lohaus scored 11 with six boards.
Loyola-Chicago shot 41 percent from 3-point range, but just 31 percent from inside the arc. Northern Iowa, which had a 26-23 lead at halftime, hit just 6 of 20 from distance and shot 36.5 percent overall. The Panthers have lost six straight.
MORGANTOWN, Va. (AP) — Naomi Davenport scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and No. 12 West Virginia beat Iowa State 57-49 on Sunday. Along with Davenport’s fourth double-double this season, Chania Ray added 13 points and eight rebounds and Teana Muldlrow had 14 boards to go with nine points. The Mountaineers (14-2, 2-2 Big-12) snapped a two-game losing streak. Bridget Carleton scored 14 points for Iowa State (7-8, 1-3), which swept the Mountaineers last season before West Virginia went on to win the Big 12 Tournament.
West Virginia led by 15 with 7:42 left in the third period before the Cyclones got within a point with a 10-1 run early in the fourth quarter. The Mountaineers responded with five straight points and though they didn’t have a field goal in the final five minutes, they made 10 of 14 free throws. Neither team reached 30 percent shooting. West Virginia made 19 of 29 free throws to 11 of 18 for the Cyclones.
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Megan Gustafson scored 34 points with 12 rebounds for her 43rd career double-double, Kathleen Doyle had her second double-double and No. 18 Iowa turned back Illinois 84-71 on Sunday. Alexis Sevillian matched her career-high with 21 points, hitting 5 of 8 3-pointers, for the Hawkeyes (15-2, 3-1 Big Ten) and Doyle had 15 points and 10 assists. Doyle had her first double-double of 13 and 11 on Thursday when Iowa lost at No. 13 Maryland 80-64. In that game, the Hawkeyes had 23 turnovers but against the Illini, they had a season-low seven turnovers and 24 assists on 29 baskets. Iowa shot 51 percent (29 of 57) with Gustafson finishing 12 of 17 plus 10 of 10 from the foul line en route to her 16th double-double in 17 games this season.
Alex Wittinger had 20 points and 13 rebounds for Illinois (9-9, 0-4), which has lost five straight. Ali Andrews had 13 points. Gustafson scored inside on back-to-back possessions before Doyle made four free throws as Iowa closed the game on an 8-0 run. The Hawkeyes made their last five baskets while the Illini missed their last three and had three turnovers in the last 2:17.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Ice fishing is now open on DeSoto Lake from now through the end of February. The DeStoto National Wildlife Refuge says it’s up to individual anglers to determine whether the ice is safe each day. A general guideline is 4 inches of clear and solid ice at a minimum for foot travel and ice fishing.
The refuge’s visitor center is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except on federal holidays. Visitors can see the lake from inside the center. In recent days, eagles, ducks, swans and geese have been seen from the visitor center. The center also has bird feeders that attract an array of birds.
DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge is located north of Omaha, near Missouri Valley, Iowa and Fort Calhoun, Nebraska.

(AP) — Marcus Mariota led Tennessee to three second-half touchdowns, incredibly throwing one of his TD passes to himself, and the Titans rallied from a 21-3 halftime hole to beat Kansas City 22-21 for their first playoff win in 14 years. The come-from-behind win also denied the Chiefs their first home playoff win in nearly a quarter century.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs’ playoff curse continued with a 22-21 loss to the Titans, blowing a 21-3 halftime lead in the process. Kansas City still has not won a postseason game at Arrowhead Stadium since January 1994, a maddening stretch of nearly a quarter century.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Vincent Edwards scored 21 points and Isaac Haas added 14 to lead No. 13 Purdue past Nebraska 74-62 for its 11th consecutive win. The Boilermakers extended their home-court winning streak to 18 and won their 10th straight home game against a conference foe. James Palmer Jr. finished with 22 points and Isaac Copeland had 16 to lead the Cornhuskers. Nebraska’s four-game winning streak ended.
STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Jeffrey Carroll scored 24 points and Kendall Smith added a season-high 20 to help Oklahoma State defeat Iowa State 96-87 in overtime. It was the first Big 12 victory for new coach Mike Boynton and snapped Iowa State’s 10-game win streak against the Cowboys. Tavarius Shine scored 15 points and Mitchell Solomon added 14 points and nine rebounds for Oklahoma State.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Toby Hegner made a career-high five 3-pointers in scoring 19 points and Creighton defeated Georgetown 90-66. Hegner made 5 of 8 3-point tries and the Blue Jays (13-3, 3-1 Big East) hit 16 of 36 from the arc in winning their third straight game and eighth in their past nine.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Marcus Mariota led Tennessee to three second-half touchdowns, incredibly throwing one of his TD passes to himself , and the Titans rallied from a 21-3 deficit to beat the Kansas City Chiefs 22-21 on Saturday for their first playoff win in 14 years.
Mariota threw for 205 yards and two scores, including the 22-yard go-ahead strike to Eric Decker with just over six minutes left that ushered the Titans into the divisional round of the playoffs.
“Special, special,” Mariota said. “I’m a part of a great team. I’m a part of a group of guys that really just believe in each other. And, it’s something special and I’m look forward to playing next week.”
They’ll head to New England or Pittsburgh next week.
Derrick Henry had a career-high 156 yards rushing and another score for Tennessee (10-7), while a defense that was fileted by Alex Smith and the Chiefs (10-7) during the first half pitched a shutout in the second half — dooming the Kansas City franchise to another humiliating postseason defeat.
The Chiefs haven’t won a home playoff game since January 1994.
Smith threw for 264 yards and two touchdowns , but most of that came before halftime. He couldn’t get on track in the second half and misfired on fourth-and-9 at the Titans 44 with just over two minutes to go, denying the Chiefs a chance for Harrison Butker to kick a go-ahead field goal.
The letdown was made even more depressing when Henry appeared to fumble as Tennessee tried to run out the clock.
The Chiefs’ Derrick Johnson picked up the ball and returned it for a touchdown with 1:47 to go, but a video replay showed that Henry was down and the call was overturned.
Tennessee succeeded in running out the clock from there.
In the first half, the Chiefs looked every bit the team that had won four straight in convincing fashion, and the Titans looked every bit the team that backed into the playoffs.
Kareem Hunt, the league’s top rusher this season , plunged in from 1 yard for a 7-0 lead, and Smith hit Travis Kelce with a 13-yard touchdown pass a few minutes later. Smith added another touchdown toss to Demarcus Robinson on the final offensive play for a 21-3 lead at the break.
Smith was 19 of 23 for 231 yards in the half. Mariota was 7 of 13 for 81 yards and a pick.
The Titans’ young quarterback got on track in the second half, though, converting a couple of key third downs — one of them with his legs — in marching his team 91 yards. He capped it by throwing the first TD pass to himself, the first player to accomplish the feat in playoff history.
The previous player to do it in any game was the Vikings’ Brad Johnson during the 1997 season.
“Right place, right time,” Mariota said with a smile.
Tennessee nearly squandered its momentum when Adoree Jackson fumbled a punt, but the Chiefs were unable to pick up a first down and Butker knocked a 48-yard field goal off the upright.
This time, it was Henry who led the Titans downfield, capping another TD drive by rumbling nearly untouched 35 yards right up the middle to get within 21-16 with 14:08 to go.
“Grit. It’s just grit,” Henry said of his team’s rally.
“You’ve got to believe in each other, man. We were down like this last year and we came back. We told them we’ve got 30 minutes left, all we’ve got to do is play our game, execute the plays and everything will take care of itself.”
The Chiefs’ offense had been rendered impotent by that point, unable to move the ball much after Kelce left with a concussion in the first half. The Titans blanketed Tyreek Hill whenever he touched the ball, and they stacked the box to slow Hunt down in obvious rushing situations.
The Titans finally pulled ahead when Mariota threw a strike to Decker from 22 yards, and that led to a moment of controversy. The Titans went for a 2-point conversion and the field-goal edge, and Mariota lost the ball as he was getting sacked by the Chiefs’ Daniel Sorenson.
Frank Zombo picked it up and began running for two points that would have swung the lead back to Kansas City, but the officials had ruled that Mariota’s progress had been stopped.
It wound up being a crucial call in a game that came down to the wire.
RECORD RALLY
Only two road teams have rallied from at least 18 down to win a playoff game in NFL history. The Cowboys came back from 21-3 down in the first half to beat the 49ers 30-28 in December 1972, and the Lions came back from 27-7 in the second half to beat the 49ers in December 1957.
KELCE HURT
Kelce sustained a concussion on a wicked blow from Titans S Johnathan Cyprien late in the first half. Kelce, who had four catches for 66 yards, lay stunned on the turf for a moment before wobbling toward his huddle. Trainers quickly took him to the locker room.
UP NEXT
The Titans’ opponent in the divisional round will be decided Sunday. If the Jaguars beat the Bills in their wild-card matchup, Tennessee heads to New England to face the No. 1 seed. If Buffalo wins, the Titans head to face No. 2 seed Pittsburgh.
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Reed Timmer scored 10 of his 18 points in the final 5 1/2 minutes, including a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining, to lift Drake to a 75-72 victory over Indiana State on Saturday.
After Brandon Murphy’s 3-point play pulled Indiana State within 60-59 with six minutes left, Timmer buried a 3-pointer and added a layup off a turnover to push Drake’s lead to 65-59. Brenton Scott’s 3 cut the deficit to three, but Timmer scored from long range to push the advantage to 70-64 with 2:22 left to play. Jordan Barnes knocked down two 3-pointers, the second one pulling the Sycamores within 73-72 with four seconds left.
De’Antae McMurray scored 18 of his 25 points in the first half and the Bulldogs (10-7, 4-0 Missouri Valley Conference) led 39-29 at intermission. Nick McGlynn added 14 points for Drake, which shot 53 percent from the floor.
Scott tied his season high with 25 points and set a career high with seven steals for the Sycamores (7-9, 2-2). Brandon Murphy chipped in with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Barnes scored 14 with six assists.
