Iowa State holds off Maryland-Eastern Shore 55-49

Sports

December 21st, 2017 by admin

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Cameron Lard scored 15 points, Donovan Jackson had 12 and Iowa State held off Maryland-Eastern Shore 55-49 on Wednesday for its ninth consecutive victory.

Nick Weiler-Babb had seven points, 12 rebounds and six assists for the Cyclones (9-2). They had just seven players available after senior Hans Brase sprained his ankle in practice on Tuesday.

Seven guys proved to be barely enough against the Shore Hawks.

Iowa State scored the first 10 points and, to its credit, never trailed. But the Cyclones were far from crisp early, and Maryland-Eastern Shore (3-10) was even worse in the first half — shooting just 7 of 32 and falling behind 34-17.

Iowa State continued its sloppy play in the second half, finishing with 17 turnovers and allowing a 12-0 run that let the Hawks get within nine with just over six minutes left.

Ahmad Frost had 19 points to lead Maryland-Eastern Shore. The Shore Hawks, who shot just 29 percent, have dropped five straight.

Mitchell, Shaw headline signing day for Cyclones

Sports

December 20th, 2017 by admin

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State signed 18 players to letters of intent Wednesday, including quarterback Re-al Mitchell and wide receiver Sean Shaw Jr.

Mitchell threw for nearly 3,000 yards and rushed for 1,000 in 2016 and was considered one of the nation’s top dual-threat quarterbacks out of Bellflower, California. Shaw caught 40 touchdowns in his prep career in Jones, Oklahoma.

The Cyclones dipped into the junior college ranks for safety Greg Eisworth and punter Cory Dunn.

Iowa State signed a trio of Iowans as well, led by Creston lineman Trevor Downing.

The Cyclones (7-5) wrap up 2017 by facing Memphis in the Liberty Bowl on Dec. 30.

Petras, Nixon highlight Iowa recruiting class

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa signed 15 players to letters of intent on Wednesday, a class headlined by four-star quarterback Spencer Petras and junior college defensive lineman Daviyon Nixon.

The 6-foot-5 Petras, of Greenbrae, California, broke school records for yards and touchdowns previously held by current Los Angeles Rams starter Jared Goff. Nixon turned down Alabama to sign with Iowa after a season at Iowa Western.

The Hawkeyes also brought in four-star defensive end John Waggoner from Dowling Catholic and linebacker Dillon Doyle, the son of Iowa strength coach Chris Doyle.

The Hawkeyes (7-5) close out 2017 against Boston College (7-5) in the Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 27 at Yankee Stadium.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Luka Garza scored 17 points, Tyler Cook and Isaiah Moss each added 16, and Iowa beat Southern Utah 92-64 for its third straight victory. Jack Nunge’s steal and pass to Moss for a breakaway dunk gave Iowa a 17-5 lead and the Hawkeyes extended it to 51-31 at halftime behind 10 points from Cook.

BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) — Mike Daum grabbed 14 rebounds and scored 35 points on 14-of-24 shooting, and South Dakota State beat Drake 87-74. It’s the fifth time Daum has scored 30 points this season and the second time in as many games.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa cornerback Josh Jackson’s last game as a Hawkeye could be next week’s Pinstripe Bowl. Jackson says he is “50-50” on whether he will come back for his senior season. Jackson had seven interceptions this season, tied for best in the nation. The Hawkeyes face Boston College on Dec. 27 at Yankee Stadium.
