(From hawkeyesports.com) IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior linebacker Josey Jewell has been named the recipient of the 2017 Jack Lambert Award as the best linebacker in the nation. The award was announced Monday by the Touchdown Club of Columbus.

The Jack Lambert Award was first presented in 1991 and is named in honor of the former Pittsburgh Steeler. Lambert is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and was a four-time Super Bowl champion during his career.

The Jack Lambert Award will be presented during the 63rd Touchdown Club of Columbus Awards on Saturday, Feb. 17. Clemson’s Ben Boulware earned the award in 2016.

Jewell, a native of Decorah, Iowa, leads the Big Ten and ranks third nationally in tackles (125 total, 11.4 per game). He is one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Award, and is a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award. Jewell is a semifinalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy and was a semifinalist for the Bednarik and Butkus Awards.

Jewell recorded eight tackles and three pass break-ups as Iowa closed the regular season with a 56-14 win at Nebraska. He also added his second interception of the season and recorded one tackle for loss as the Hawkeye defense allowed just 67 net rushing yards. Jewell has 125 tackles this season.

He is the third Hawkeye in program history to have three seasons with at least 115 tackles (Larry Station 83, 84, 85; Abdul Hodge 03, 04, 05). Jewell has led the team in tackles in each of the last two seasons (126 in 2015, 124 in 2016). Jewell has 426 career tackles, fifth all-time in program history. He needs nine stops to match Brad Quast for fourth all-time (435).

Jewell was named the Lott IMPACT Trophy national defensive Player of the Week for his play against Wyoming and Purdue. He was the Chuck Bednarik Award national and Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Week following Iowa’s 24-3 win over Wyoming (14 tackles).

Jewell was named Big Ten co-Defensive Player of the Week, Bronko Nagurski Defensive Player of the Week, Bednarik Award, and College Sports Madness Defensive Player of the Week following his performance versus No. 4 Penn State (16 tackles).

Jewell was named midseason first team All-American by five media outlets, including Associated Press, ESPN.com, CBSSports.com, Sporting News, and The All-American.

The Hawkeyes (7-5, 4-5) are bowl eligible for the 14th time in the last 16 seasons. Iowa’s bowl destination and opponent will be announced on Sunday.

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — Wisconsin and Michigan have three players apiece on the coaches’ All-Big Ten defense first team.

The conference began announcing its postseason awards on Tuesday. The coaches’ All-Big Ten offense will be announced Wednesday and individual awards on Thursday.

Linebacker T.J. Edwards and defensive backs Nick Nelson and D’Cota Dixon represent Wisconsin on the first-team defense. Michigan players on the first team are linemen Rashan Gary and Maurice Hurst and linebacker Devin Bush.

Ohio State linemen Nick Bosa and Tyquan Lewis also are on the first team, along with linebacker Josey Jewell and defensive back Josh Jackson of Iowa. Penn State defensive back Marcus Allen rounds out the first team.

First-team specialists are Indiana kicker Griffin Oakes, Rutgers punter Ryan Anderson and return man Saquon Barkley of Penn State.

Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources report Conservation Officers responded to a hunting incident at around 3:30 p.m., Saturday, in Audubon County. Authorities say 56-year old Arthur Goupille, of Negaunee, Mich., was hunting pheasants in Audubon County when his gun discharged hitting two members of his hunting party standing about six feet away.

The group had completed a drive and was taking a break when the incident occurred. Goupille’s gun fell over, discharged, and struck the nearby hunters. The hunters were taken to the Audubon County Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. They were treated and released.

The DNR reminds hunters to use safe hunting practices, treat every firearm as if it is loaded and always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — UTEP coach Tim Floyd abruptly announced his immediate retirement after a 66-52 loss to Lamar on Monday night. Floyd won 466 games as a college coach at five schools, including Iowa State and Southern California. He also was coach for the Chicago Bulls and New Orleans Hornets in the NBA. The 63-year-old Floyd took over at UTEP before the 2010-11 season, winning 138 games.

The unexpected statement came during his postgame news conference after the Miners (1-5) lost their fifth straight game. Floyd said it was “the right time” and that it was “my last game as a coach.” In a news release, UTEP said it would announce a plan Tuesday for who would lead the program.

In the game, Zjori Bosha scored 18 points to lead Lamar (5-1), which scored the game’s first 13 points and led by 20 points at halftime. Trey Wade scored 13 points for UTEP, which shot 33 percent.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State coach Matt Campbell and the Cyclones have agreed to a new six-year deal worth $22.5 million, increasing Campbell’s annual compensation from $2.1 million to $3.5 million per season. Campbell, who led Iowa State to a 7-5 record and its first winning season in Big 12 play in 15 years, was expected to be among the top names in the offseason coaching carousel. Iowa State beat a pair of top-5 teams this season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs started the season 5-0 with the look of a Super Bowl contender. They have lost five of their past six games and seen much of their AFC West lead evaporate. But trying to figure out exactly where everything has gone wrong has been tough for the Chiefs, partly because there are so many problems in so many places.

UNDATED (AP) — The Missouri Valley Conference was supposed to be devastated by the loss of Wichita State. So far, the league has shown it might have been vastly underrated for 2017-18. League teams are 46-16, the best combined start for the Valley since 1962-63. Loyola at Chicago and newcomer Valparaiso are 7-0.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State freshman Skylar Thompson led the Wildcats to dramatic wins over Texas Tech, Oklahoma State and Iowa State. Now, after helping them get bowl-eligible, the young QB has the chance to start three more years and bring some stability to the game’s most important position for Kansas State.

The CAM girls opened up the season with a home win over the AHSTW Lady Vikes 46-27 on Monday night. It wasn’t a pretty game as the two teams combined for 39 turnovers and struggled to make shots. Defense was a bright spot for both teams at times and the Cougars zone really kept the Lady Vikes out of sync in the first half.

CAM was led by Madison Gettler who finished with 18 points on the night, 14 of those coming in the first half. The Cougars led 13-3 after the first quarter and 22-9 at halftime. The Lady Vikes still couldn’t get the offense going in the third quarter and CAM extended the lead to 30-11 to give them a fairly comfortable lead the rest of the way. Paige McAfee added 10 points and Macy Ticknor had 8 for CAM.

AHSTW was led by 9 points from Sarah Butcher who dropped in 3 threes in the fourth quarter. Kinsey Scheffler had 8 points on the night. The Lady Vikes travel to Treynor on Tuesday night to open Western Iowa Conference play.

CAM hosts Paton-Churdan in Rolling Valley Conference play on Friday.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State University announced today that football coach Matt Campbell has agreed to a new six-year contract worth $22.5 million. Campbell’s guaranteed annual salary will increase from $2.1 million to $3.5 million effective immediately. The athletics department has also agreed to provide Campbell an additional $1 million for incremental raises for his staff.

Campbell’s 2017 team was 7-5 overall and 5-4 in Big 12 play, matching the school record for conference wins in a season. The Cyclones’ fourth-place tie in the league was their best as a member of the Big 12. Iowa State defeated both Oklahoma (then third-ranked) and TCU (ranked fourth at the time) this year. ISU had one win over a top five school in its history prior to 2017. ISU is bowl-eligible for the first time since 2012 and will learn its destination this week.

Campbell will hold a news conference Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Bergstrom Football Complex.

The Atlantic boys basketball team hopes they can carry some momentum from their state tournament appearance last season into the 2017-18 campaign. The Trojans went 19-6 last season and lost in the first round of the state tournament to Waverly-Shell Rock. Atlantic will have to overcome the loss of an impact player and leader in Garrett Franken, but a strong group of experienced players do return. Austin Alexander, Chase Mullenix, Scott Leonard, Grant Podhajsky, Tyler Moen, and Jaxson Eden are all back and played significant minutes last season. Head Coach Alan Jenkins talked about the experience the team has.

The Trojans allowed an average of 55.8 points per game to opponents last season and Coach Jenkins expects this year’s team to be even better defensively.

Scott Leonard is the top returning scorer after averaging 14.7 points per game last year and Coach Jenkins expects him to have a huge impact down low again this season, and should be one of the premiere big men in the conference and class. Austin Alexander returns at the point after averaging 11.0 points per game last year and leading the team with 100 assists. Austin will be another player the Trojans lean on offensively and Coach Jenkins said he expects him to have a breakout year in that regard. Atlantic will have to replace the 23.8 points per game that Garrett Franken contributed last year. Franken is now a freshman at The University of North Dakota. Coach Jenkins talked about replacing those points as a team.
