LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Maddie Simon scored 19 points, Hannah Whitish added 18 and Nebraska beat No. 20 Iowa 74-65 on Tuesday night. Jasmine Cincore’s 3-point play on a fast break extended Nebraska’s lead to 70-63 with 1:21 to go. Hannah Stewart scored at the other end but Iowa went scoreless from there. Nebraska was just 4 of 10 from the free-throw line in the final minute and finished 17 of 35 (48.6 percent).

Taylor Kissinger had 12 points and eight rebounds for Nebraska (13-6, 4-2 Big Ten). Kate Cain, who entered ranked fifth nationally in blocked shots at 3.5 per game, had five blocks and six points.

Megan Gustafson had 29 points and 18 rebounds for her NCAA-leading 18th double-double of the season for Iowa (15-4, 3-3). She scored half of Iowa’s 24 first-half points and also grabbed nine rebounds. Amanda Ollinger scored a career-high 12 points.

Nebraska snapped a five-game losing streak in the series dating to 2014-15.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Bennett Koch scored 19 points and Northern Iowa pulled away early in the second half to beat Drake 68-54 on Tuesday night. Northern Iowa (10-9, 2-5 Missouri Valley Conference) has won two straight since snapping a seven-game skid, and has beaten Drake (11-9, 5-2) in 16 of the last 18 games.

The Bulldogs had their last lead, 38-37 with 15 minutes left before Northern Iowa used a 23-11 surge for a 60-49 lead with four minutes remaining. Back-to-back 3s from Spencer Haldeman and Tywhon Pickford made it a 17-point Panther advantage with 2:28 to go.

Pickford added 16 points and 10 rebounds for Northern Iowa. Haldeman chipped in 12 points and Klint Carlson had 10. Reed Timmer had 17 points and Nick McGlynn 13 to lead Drake, which has lost two of its last three games.

The Griswold Tigers boys basketball team survived a last second three attempt from the Riverside Bulldogs for a 37-35 victory on Tuesday night in Oakland.  After Morgan Mundorf missed two free throws for the Tigers, 3 seconds were left for Riverside’s last chance. AJ Dillon raced up the floor and got a look from a few feet outside the top of the key and his game winning attempt fell wide right. The Tigers grabbed their second win of the season and avenged an earlier three point loss to the Bulldogs.

Griswold trailed by one at the end of the first half but scored the first eight points of the second half and in the process took their first lead of the game. The Tigers led by four heading into the final period and did just enough to pick up the win. The Tigers could of made the win a little more comfortable but finished just 9-24 from the free throw line.

Morgan Mundorf led the way for Griswold’s win with a monster double-double of 18 points and 18 rebounds. Josh Brownlee chipped in 8 points for the now 2-12 Tigers. They travel next to Treynor on Friday.

AJ Dillon had 20 points and 6 steals for the Bulldogs as they fall to 2-11 with the loss. They host Audubon on Friday night.

The Griswold girls basketball team pulled away from the Riverside Bulldogs in the fourth quarter to take a 41-25 win on Tuesday night. It was a three point game at halftime with an 18-15 Griswold lead. Riverside then went scoreless in the third quarter but Griswold only increased their lead by 4 in that quarter. Jocelyn Amos then dropped in 6 of her 11 total points in the fourth quarter to propel Griswold to the victory. The Tigers outscored the Bulldogs 19-10 in that final quarter.

Mateya Peters led all scorers with 13 points and she also grabbed 6 rebounds for Griswold. The Tigers improved to 6-8 with the win. They next travel to Treynor on Friday night.

Ashlynn Amdor led Riverside with 12 points. The Bulldogs fall to 2-10 on the season. They will host Audubon on Friday.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Fans can apply for season tickets to the College World Series under a new selection process.

CWS officials announced Tuesday that fans who apply online by midnight on March 1 will be eligible for a random drawing to buy up to four season tickets. The Division I baseball championship is held at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha each June.

People can apply at NCAA.com/CWSTickets and CWSomaha.com. The number of tickets available will be based on existing season-ticket holder renewals.

The names drawn for season tickets will receive email notice by March 6. Costs range from $425 to $493, with the seats renewable every year.

The new process replaces the waiting list, which ended last year after all waiting list members were given the option to purchase tickets for the 2017 CWS.

(From Cyclones.com) AMES, Iowa – Iowa State freshman guard Lindell Wiggington has been named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after averaging 28.5 points as ISU split a pair of games last week. It is his second honor this season.

Wigginton opened the week with 27 points as ISU lost at Kansas. His 27 points matched the most by a Cyclone freshman against the Jayhawks. He followed that with an even better showing against Baylor, tallying a career-high 30 points. He is just the fourth Cyclone freshman to record a 30-point game in school history.

The Dartmouth, Nova Scotia native hit 9-of-18 three-pointers last week and also made 12-of-15 free throws.

For the season, Wigginton is averaging 16.5 points. His seven 20-point games trails only Marcus Fizer and Curtis Stinson’s eight games for the ISU freshman record.

(From Cyclones.com) AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior linebacker/quarterback Joel Lanning is one of 21 finalists for the Lombardi Award, announced today by the Lombardi Foundation.

The Lombardi Award, formerly given to defensive linemen of linebackers, is presented to a college football player, regardless of position, based on performance, as well as leadership, character and resiliency.

The list will be trimmed to seven finalists on Jan. 22.

A true three-way player, Lanning had a remarkable senior season, leading the Cyclones into the national rankings for the first time since 2005 and a victory in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl with his uncanny versatility.

The two-time team captain and first-team All-American switched to linebacker prior to the 2017 season after spending his first four years in Ames as a quarterback, perhaps making Lanning one of the best comeback stories in college football history.

He didn’t play a down in his final game as a junior before Campbell convinced him to try linebacker for his senior season, a position he hadn’t played since eighth grade.

His transition was remarkable, leading the Cyclone defense, which ranked 26^th nationally in scoring defense (20.9), at the Mike linebacker spot.

Lanning ranked 37th nationally in tackles per game (8.8), registering a team-high four double-digit tackle performances, including a career-high 20 stops vs. Texas. His 20 tackles vs. the Longhorns ranks ninth in school history and ties for fifth among FBS players this season.

Lanning was second on the team in sacks (6.0), third in TFL (11.0) and had a fumble recovery and interception on the season.

Lanning first appeared on the national radar with his incredible “Iron Man” performance at Oklahoma on Oct. 7. With Lanning playing 78 total snaps (57 on defense, 13 on offense, eight on special teams), the Cyclones upset No. 3 Oklahoma (38-31) en route to their first-ever win over a top-five opponent on the road.

Lanning finished the Oklahoma game with eight tackles, a sack, a fumble recovery, 35 rushing yards and 25 passing yards in one of the most memorable performances in school history. He was named Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts.

A native of Ankeny, Iowa, Lanning’s overall season snap count was astounding (1,001 snaps: 822 on defense, 128 on special teams, 51 on offense).

Lanning, who ranked third on the team in rushing (135) and fourth in passing (47), was utilized by the Cyclone offense in crucial situations throughout the season. He was perfect in “Money” down conversions, going 5-of-5 on third down and 5-of-5 on fourth down conversion rushes.

Lanning will participate in the East-West Shrine Game on Saturday (Jan. 20). Kickoff is at 2 p.m. on the NFL Network.
