LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Bears have hired Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy as their new head coach, hoping he can help lift a foundering NFL franchise emerge from one of its worst runs in history.

The Bears announced the move Monday, a week after firing coach John Fox. The Bears are just 14-34 record in the past three years for a .292 winning percentage that ranks as the second-lowest in their history. They Bears were 5-11 this past season.

The 39-year-old Nagy spent the past 10 seasons working under Andy Reid in Philadelphia and Kansas City. He did not call plays until late this season, but drew praise for his work with Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith. In Chicago, he will be trying to develop No. 2 overall draft pick Mitchell Trubisky.

The Chiefs won the AFC West, only to blow an 18-point halftime lead in a playoff loss to Tennessee on Saturday. The Bears met with Nagy in Kansas City on Sunday and wasted little time hiring him.

Chicago also interviewed Philadelphia quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo, Minnesota and New England offensive coordinators Pat Shurmur and Josh McDaniels, Vikings defensive coordinator George Edwards and Chicago defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Skiers with prosthetic limbs and braces took to the slopes in eastern Iowa this weekend for an annual adaptive skiing event. The Telegraph Herald reports that about 30 individuals attended the event at Sundown Mountain Resort in Dubuque on Sunday. The event was organized by Clark & Associates Prosthetics and Orthotics.

Kaily Ramage spent all afternoon on the slopes. The 9-year-old has had a prosthetic left leg since she was a baby. Kaily says using adaptive equipment to ski feels easy. Waterloo resident Adam Weber says he began snowboarding with adaptive modifications last year. He uses a piece of foam in his boot and a different bracket that allows his prosthetic to be bent.

Weber says inspirational young skiers like Kaily are often the future of winter sports.

Maryland uses second-half surge to beat Iowa 91-73

Sports

January 8th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Freshman Bruno Fernando scored a career-high 21 points, Anthony Cowan Jr. added 15 and Maryland beat Iowa 91-73 Sunday night to keep the Hawkeyes winless in the Big Ten. Rebounding from a 30-point loss to No. 1 Michigan State just three days earlier, the Terrapins (14-4, 3-2) used a second-half surge to secure their eighth win in nine games.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery was ejected 45 seconds before halftime after receiving two straight technical fouls for animatedly arguing a traveling call on sophomore guard Jordan Bohannon. The Hawkeyes (9-9, 0-5) hung in there without McCaffery, but faded in the latter stage of their third game in six days. Isaiah Moss led Iowa with a career-high 25 points and Bohannon had 17.
