Iowa rallies to edge Illinois

Sports

January 12th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

Iowa needed overtime to post its first Big Ten win at Illinois, Thursday night. Iowa outscored the Illini 10-0 to start the extra session in a 104-97 win, a game they trailed by 20 in the opening half. Sophomore Jordan Bohannon led the Hawks with 29.

A key was free throws. The Hawkeyes were 33-40 at the stripe. Iowa coach Fran McCaffery says the Hawkeyes stepped it up defensively after giving up 54 points in the opening half.

Iowa is now 1-5 in the Big Ten.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Jordan Barnes hit five 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 27 points and Brandon Murphy tipped in Barnes’ missed 3 at the buzzer to give Indiana State beat Northern Iowa 69-67. Murphy finished with nine points on 4-of-5 shooting and Brenton Scott scored 13 points for Indiana State.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa is expected to lose cornerback Josh Jackson to the NFL after his standout junior season. The Hawkeyes also weren’t surprised to see junior center James Daniels go, and he might be just as hard to replace. Iowa enters the offseason with plenty of key spots to fill for next season.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz is preparing to battle an unlikely off-season opponent: his next-door neighbors. Trial is scheduled next month in a lawsuit that pits Ferentz and his wife against the three other families who live along their private road outside Iowa City. A judge is expected to decide whether the Ferentzes have breached a 2001 legal agreement and trespassed by planting trees that encroach onto Saddle Club Road.

HOUSTON (AP) — Scott Frost has one final award to share with the University of Central Florida. The former UCF coach and new Nebraska boss received the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award
