Iowa State rolls past No. 15 West Virginia 93-77

Sports

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Donovan Jackson scored 25 points, Lindell Wigginton added 22 and Iowa State upset 15th-ranked West Virginia 93-77 on Wednesday night, sending the short-handed Mountaineers to their fifth loss in six games. Cameron Lard scored 18 points with 13 rebounds for the Cyclones (12-9, 3-6 Big 12). They took advantage of the absence of West Virginia’s Daxter Miles Jr. (illness) by handing the Mountaineers (16-6, 5-4) their biggest defeat since a 23-point blowout at the hands of Texas A&M in the opener.

The Cyclones had West Virginia playing catch-up from the opening tip. The Mountaineers caught them just once — but were never able to overtake them. West Virginia fell behind 25-11 after allowing Iowa State to hit 10 of its first 13 shots. The Mountaineers rallied with an 18-4 run, but the Cyclones answered with a 24-11 spurt and went back ahead 53-40. Iowa State continued its torrid shooting in the second half. Jackson’s fifth 3 gave it a 74-60 lead, and Wigginton’s drive at the end of the shot clock made it 84-70 with 4:38 left. The Cyclones committed just eight turnovers against the league’s leader in turnover margin despite missing point guard Nick Weiler-Babb to knee tendinitis. Jevon Carter scored 18 points and Esa Ahmad and Sagaba Konate each had 17 for West Virginia.

Iowa State Coach Steve Prohm had to be encouraged by his team’s effort after a 68-45 home loss to Tennessee that left he and his players calling the Cyclones “soft” more than once. Iowa State showed resolve against a team that had won four of the previous five meetings in the series. Iowa State plays at Baylor on Saturday.

Evansville wins 3rd straight, beats Northern Iowa 57-49

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Ryan Taylor hit 3 of 5 from beyond the three-point arc to score 25 points and help power Evansville to a 57-49 win over Northern Iowa in a clash of Missouri Valley Conference squads Wednesday night. Taylor topped 20 points for the 12th time this season by hitting 10 of 17 from the field. Evansville earned its first three-game win streak of the season after knocking off Drake, 77-73 Saturday.

The teams were tied at intermission, 21-21, and the Panthers got within four points, 45-41 after Bennett Koch converted a pair of free throws with 7:08 left, but the Purple Aces responded with an 8-1 run for an 11-point lead. Blake Simmons scored 15 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for Evansville (15-9, 5-6). Koch finished with 19 points, converting 9 of 14 from the free-throw line to lead Northern Iowa (11-12, 3-8).

Midwest Sports Brief, 2/1/18 – ISU upsets WVA

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Donovan Jackson scored 25 points and Lindell Wigginton added 22 as Iowa State upset 15th-ranked West Virginia 93-77. It was the short-handed Mountaineers’ fifth loss in six games. Cameron Lard scored 18 points with 13 rebounds for the Cyclones. They took advantage of the absence of West Virginia’s Daxter Miles Jr. by handing the Mountaineers their biggest defeat since a 23-point blowout at the hands of Texas A&M in the opener.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs planned to move on from Alex Smith the moment they traded up to draft Patrick Mahomes II last year. Now that Smith is headed to the Redskins in a deal that solved many of their issues, the Chiefs have a clearer picture of what their future looks like. Mahomes dazzled coach Andy Reid and his staff during training camp. He made his regular-season debut in Week 17 and led the winning drive against Denver.

UNDATED (AP) — The NFL protests during the national anthem begun by Colin Kaepernick in 2016 and continued by dozens of players this season were aimed at taking a stand against systemic racism that many of the league’s top players say they or someone they know have also experienced. The Associated Press asked 56 of the 59 black players at last weekend’s Pro Bowl if they had ever experienced racial profiling by law enforcement. All answered yes, with several detailing accounts of unfair treatment.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — As one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, Alex Reyes was expected to play a vital role in St. Louis last season. That was before Reyes suffered an elbow injury during spring training and missed the regular season after surgery. After a year of rehabilitation, the 23-year-old Reyes is back and ready for spring training.

FREMONT, Neb. (AP) — Tiny Midland University in Nebraska has created a pipeline to a Hawaiian high school for female wrestlers. Three women from the Aloha State are competing for Midland this season. Women’s wrestling has been an Olympic sport since 2004 and high school participation across the nation has nearly doubled in the last five years. The sport is on the cusp of expansion in both the NCAA and NAIA.

AP Sources: Chiefs agree to trade Smith to Redskins

Sports

January 31st, 2018 by Ric Hanson

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two people with direct knowledge of the trade say the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to deal quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins. The people spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday night on condition of anonymity because the move can’t be completed until the start of the new league year in March. One person tells the AP the Redskins have agreed to a four-year extension with Smith, who had one year left on his contract.

Smith, who turns 34 in May, spent the past five seasons with the Chiefs, leading them to the playoffs four times while throwing for 102 touchdowns and 33 interceptions. He carries a $17 million salary-cap hit for 2018. The trade spells the end of Kirk Cousins’ tumultuous tenure with the Redskins after back-to-back seasons on the franchise tag.
