DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Reed Timmer scored a career-high 39 points to lead Drake as it downed Indiana State 90-76 on Wednesday night. Timmer was 8 of 15 from long range and sank all nine of his free throws for the Bulldogs (15-13, 9-6 Missouri Valley Conference). De’Antae McMurray added 16 points and Nick McGlynn had 10 points and seven rebounds. C.J. Rivers led with 10 rebounds in addition to his eight points.

Timmer drained three 3-pointers and De’Antae McMurray and Graham Woodward each added another in a 21-8 start for the Bulldogs and they held on for a 46-44 edge at the break. Indiana State went ahead by two early in the second half and Timmer answered with another three 3-pointers as part of a 13-0 run that put the Bulldogs back up 67-56 with 11:46 to go.

Jordan Barnes scored 26 points to lead the Sycamores (11-16, 6-9) who have lost three straight.

Robinson scores 18 as Wolverines beat Hawkeyes 74-59

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Lately, Duncan Robinson has found himself pondering his legacy. Senior co-captains Robinson and Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman each scored 18 points to help No. 22 Michigan beat Iowa 74-59 on Wednesday night. It was a win that both young men looked at as another stepping stone toward greater achievements.

Luka Garza scored 22 points to pace the Hawkeyes (12-16, 3-12), losers of four straight. Isaiah Moss added 12 points and Tyler Cook scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Hawkeyes came into the game second in the Big Ten in scoring offense, averaging 80.1 points per game, but Michigan became just the third team to hold Iowa under 60 points this season. Iowa opened a quick 7-0 lead, but 12 first-half turnovers by the Hawkeyes turned the game in Michigan’s favor.

The Hawkeyes have played three straight games against ranked opponents and lost all three by a combined margin of 252-216.  Iowa is now 0-4 against ranked opponents this season. Sophomore guard Jordan Bohannon has hit 30 successive free throws, four shy of the school record set by Chris Street in 1993. Bohannon’s last missed free throw was Jan. 4 against Ohio State.

The Hawkeyes play host to Indiana on Saturday.

No. 13 Kansas holds off Iowa State 83-77

Sports

February 14th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Udoka Azubuike scored 19 points, Malik Newman had 17 and 13th-ranked Kansas bounced back from a brutal loss at Baylor by beating Iowa State 83-77 on Tuesday. Lagerald Vick scored 16 points for the Jayhawks (20-6, 9-4 Big 12), who shot 48.4 percent from the floor and committed just seven turnovers. Kansas took a five-point lead into the break after Nick Weiler-Babb’s long 3 to end the half was waved off, and it quickly jumped ahead by 11 early in the second half. The Cyclones chipped away at that deficit at times, even getting as close as three, but the Jayhawks pushed their lead to 76-63 with 4:46 left on back-to-back alley-oop dunks by Azubuike. That capped a run of six straight makes for the Jayhawks — who also held Iowa State without a field goal for over four minutes down the stretch.

Freshman Cameron Lard scored 19 points with 11 rebounds for Iowa State (13-12, 4-9). But freshman Lindell Wigginton, who burned the Jayhawks for 27 points in their first meeting, was held to 12 points on 3 of 12 shooting. The Cyclones encountered a Kansas team with something to prove after it got waxed by Baylor 80-64 over the weekend. That’s a tough combination to overcome in a rebuilding year — though Lard’s monster game, on the heels of being named Big 12 newcomer of the week on Monday — was highly encouraging.

Iowa State travels to face Kansas State on Saturday.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Hunter Rhodes had 12 points and Bennett Koch added 10 as Northern Iowa held Evansville scoreless in the final two minutes to secure a 47-41 win on Tuesday night. Northern Iowa (13-14, 5-10 Missouri Valley Conference) won the game at the free-throw line, making 12 of 19, while the Purple Aces did not get to the foul line as Northern Iowa was called for just nine fouls.

Evansville made three more shots from the floor, hitting 18 of 49 while limiting the Panthers to 15-of-54 shooting (28 percent). Northern Iowa won the rebound battle 41-33. Northern Iowa was up 30-23 at the break. Evansville’s Ryan Taylor drilled a 3-pointer to close to 43-41 with 2:08 remaining but that ended the scoring for the Purple Aces. Klint Carlson and Rhodes made four free throws in the final minutes to seal the win. Taylor had 26 points, hitting 4 of 9 from distance, for Evansville (16-12, 6-9).

The Cougars huddled up after celebrating Gettler’s 1,000 point milestone

The CAM Cougars won a Girls 1A Region 7 Quarterfinal game over Stanton on Tuesday night 76-42. Madison Gettler needed 24 points coming in to the game to get to 1,000 for her career and the junior dropped in 25 to reach that milestone. Gettler was the leading scorer in a game that started off nearly flawless for the Cougars. CAM raced out to a 27-9 lead by the end of the first quarter and were up 46-23 at halftime. Shooting was hot early and the Cougars hit 6 of their first 8 attempts from long range and Gettler took care of the paint with 10 points in the opening quarter.

CAM also got 24 points from Paige McAfee and 9 each for Zoey Baylor and Sami Jahde. CAM improved to 18-4 with the win and will move on to the Regional Semifinals on Friday night. Their opponent will be a familiar one as they square off with the Exira-EHK Spartans in Elk Horn at 7:00pm Friday. We’ll have that game for you on KJAN.

The Viqueens were led by 13 points from Hope Ogletree and 9 from Savanna Moffett in the loss. Stanton ends their season with an 8-13 record.

DNR confirms Onawa location as site for Feb. 21 listening session on fall hunting and trapping regulations

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

February 13th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

Des Moines – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has confirmed the public library at 707 Iowa Ave., in Onawa, as a location for the wildlife rules public meeting on February 21. The meeting provides a setting for the DNR to listen to the public’s thoughts on hunting and trapping regulations for this fall. The 19 meeting sites include Altoona, Atlantic, Boone, Burlington, Calmar, Chariton, Council Bluffs, Creston, DeWitt, Knoxville, Lake View, Onawa, Ottumwa, Peosta, Sheldon, Solon, Spencer, Tripoli and Ventura. Complete locations are available online at www.iowadnr.gov

These meetings are part of the process for making rules in state government. The meeting is from 6 to 9 p.m. “Any rule changes must be discussed with Iowa’s citizens who might be impacted by the changes before the rule changes are proposed. The process helps ensure that rule changes serve the public’s wishes and do not impact Iowa’s economy,” said Todd Bishop, chief of the wildlife bureau. At each meeting DNR staff will facilitate a discussion about what went well last fall, what didn’t, and what changes hunters and trappers would like to see for this fall.

These discussions along with the data that the wildlife bureau collects on harvest and population numbers will be used to develop recommendations for any rule changes. Any changes must be approved by the Natural Resource Commission and then go back to the public for further comment before taking effect next fall. Any person attending the public meeting and has special requirements such as those related to mobility or hearing impairments should contact the DNR or ADA Coordinator at 515-725-8200, Relay Iowa TTY Service 800-735-7942, or Webmaster@dnr.iowa.gov, and advise of specific needs.
