Governor ‘not advocating’ for or against sports betting

News, Sports

June 27th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

Governor Kim Reynolds is not advocating or opposing the idea of legalizing sports betting in Iowa. “We’ll work with the legislators and we’ll see what that looks like next session,” Reynolds says.

A recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling prompted states like New Jersey and Delaware to legalize sports betting. Delaware also has a sports lottery. Last week, the IOWA Lottery’s board of directors voted to have lottery staff research how a sports lottery might work here. The governor says the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission which oversees the state’s casino industry is also examining the issue. “The different agencies will be looking at that. I’m sure legislators will have questions, so that’s just a way for them to be prepared for that,” Reynolds said. “I’m not advocating one way or the other.”

Iowa Lottery officials say several of the lottery’s largest retailers have said that if sports betting becomes legal in Iowa, they want the option of offering it in their stores. The casino industry has been lobbying legislators to let state-licensed casinos run sports book operations.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Carpenter homered twice, matched a career best with five hits and helped chase Corey Kluber in the shortest start of the right-hander’s career in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 11-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night. Carpenter scored a career-best five runs and also drove in three. Kluber allowed six runs in 1 2/3 innings and has lost two of his past three decisions. He gave up six hits, including homers to Carpenter and Jose Martinez, and walked one on 48 pitches.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Yairo Munoz has been removed from the St. Louis Cardinals’ game against the Cleveland Indians with a bruised left ankle. The rookie shortstop fouled a ball off his leg in the third inning during a 14-pitch at-bat before grounding out. He was replaced by Greg Garcia to start the fourth. Munoz singled in his other plate appearance and scored on a sacrifice fly by starter Carlos Martinez.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Freddy Peralta pitched one-hit ball over seven scoreless innings, Jesus Aguilar hit one of Milwaukee’s three homers and the Brewers beat the Kansas City Royals 5-1. Peralta allowed a leadoff double in the third to Adalberto Mondesi and also allowed a walk in the second. The 22-year-old rookie was perfect otherwise, striking out 10 in his fourth major league start.

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — Oakland Raiders pass rusher Bruce Irvin was one of several NFL players who spent the offseason finalizing their college degrees. With help from an NFL program that offers tuition reimbursement and increased time off in the offseason, about two dozen players each year trade their helmets for caps and gowns. Among those this year was Kansas City Chiefs guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, who earned his medical degree.

The Atlantic Softball Hall of Fame induction festivities were hampered a bit by the weather on Monday but other arrangements were made. Kristi Wright (1978-81) was inducted into the AHS Softball Hall of Fame in a ceremony that was held at Nishna Hills Golf Course clubhouse on Monday night. Wright was part of the 1981 squad that won a conference title and she was named Elite Special Mention All-State that season. Wright was a three time all-conference selection and went on to continue her softball career at Crowder Community College in Missouri and then on to Northeast Louisiana.

The ceremony was originally scheduled to be held between the JV and Varsity games against Harlan but the game was moved up on Monday due to rain in the forecast. A number of past players also gathered Monday evening for an Atlantic Softball reunion.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Spot starter John Gant pitched one-hit ball over a career-high seven innings, Marcell Ozuna hit a two-run double and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cleveland Indians 4-0. It was the third consecutive win for the Cardinals and the 10,000th regular season victory for the franchise. Cleveland had won seven straight. Mike Clevinger allowed two runs over five innings, and the Indians had just four hits.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brad Keller pitched seven innings of two-hit ball, Lucas Duda and Rosell Herrera drove in the only runs and the Kansas City Royals beat the Los Angeles Angels 2-0. Wily Peralta earned his first career save in 136 career big league games. It was a makeup of a game that was frozen out in April.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — The Falcons have signed a one-year deal with safety Ron Parker, who spent the last five seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. The 30-year-old Parker had 318 tackles, nine interceptions and seven sacks in 80 games with the Chiefs.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tyler Skaggs has returned to the mound for the Los Angeles Angels, the first of what manager Mike Scioscia hopes is a wave of healthy players. The Angels expect an update on Shohei Ohtani later this week. Players such as Garrett Richards and Zack Cozart also are making progress as they return from injuries.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Devon Allen won the 110-meter hurdles Sunday to highlight the final session of the USATF Outdoor championships. The former Oregon receiver crossed in 13.452 seconds _ with Grant Holloway in second at 13.454 _ after a weather delay that lasted just under three hours.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Oregon State has won 109 of 127 baseball games over two seasons with mostly the same cast of players. They see winning a national championship as the only way to validate their body of work. Beavers coach Pat Casey hasn’t named a starter.
