ST. LOUIS (AP) — Kris Bryant ended a 24-game homerless drought, the longest of his career, and Ian Happ and Kyle Schwarber also went deep as the Chicago Cubs routed the St. Louis Cardinals 13-5. Bryant drilled a 448-foot, two-run shot to left field off an ineffective Michael Wacha in the third inning for his first home run since May 14.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Hundreds of people have gathered to say goodbye to Red Schoendienst. Among them are current and past St. Louis Cardinals players as well as fans. The Hall of Fame second baseman’s funeral was at the Cathedral Basilica in St. Louis. He died last week at 95. Schoendienst spent most of his playing career in St. Louis and managed the Cardinals to the 1967 World Series championship and the 1968 National League pennant.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Evan Gattis hit a go-ahead grand slam, Alex Bregman and Carlos Correa also went deep and the Houston Astros beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3 for their ninth consecutive win. Charlie Morton was a bit shaky but lasted six innings on the mound. Jakob Junis allowed three homers for Kansas City.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Florida pitcher Brady Singer has won the Dick Howser Trophy as college baseball’s player of the year. Singer carries a 12-1 record and 2.30 ERA into the College World Series. He was the 18th overall pick in the Major League Baseball draft by the Kansas City Royals. The winner is determined by a vote of National College Baseball Writers Association members and presented by the College Baseball Foundation.

Former Iowa All American to bid for first outdoor title as USA Track and Field Championships

Sports

June 15th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

A former Iowa All-American will be one of the favorites in the 800 meter run at the U-S Track and Field Championships. Erik Sowinski burst onto the international scene in 2013. The five time All American for the Hawkeyes was a late addition to the 600 meter run at the Millrose Games in New York. He not only did he pull off a shocking win but he set an American record in the process. Three weeks later he won the 800 meter title at the U-S Indoor Championships.

A win in Des Moines next week would be his first outdoor title and winning it at Drake Stadium would make it even more special. Sowinski may be peaking at the right time. He is coming off a win in Europe in his last race.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid dismissed his players early after a productive offseason program, joking that even he plans to take one day off before turning his attention to training camp. His young quarterback, Patrick Mahomes II, plans to take twice as many days off _ two of them _ before he plans to get back to work.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The annual doubleheader between Iowa, Iowa State, Northern Iowa and Drake will come to an end after next season. The Hawkeyes say they are pulling out of the Des Moines-based event partly because the Big Ten is moving from an 18 to a 20-game schedule, which limits their options in non-conference scheduling.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida has established itself as “Pitching U” while advancing to the College World Series for the fourth straight season and seventh time in nine years. The staff features two first-round draft picks and an All-American closer. Throw in a pair of budding freshmen and the defending national champions might be as deep as anyone in the eight-team field. Florida’s pitching prowess will be on display when it begins play in Omaha, Nebraska against Texas Tech on Sunday.
