IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa junior defensive end Anthony Nelson and freshman defensive back Riley Moss have been recognized by the Big Ten Conference following Iowa’s 48-31 win at Minnesota. Nelson was named Defensive Player of the Week, while Moss was named Freshman of the Week. The announcement was made Monday by the Big Ten office.
The honor marks the second time Nelson has been recognized by the Big Ten, while Moss earns his first conference recognition. Nelson was named Freshman of the Week for his play in a 2016 win over Miami, Ohio.
Nelson (6-foot-7, 271 pounds), matched his career-high with three sacks at Minnesota, all in the first half. The graduate of Waukee (Iowa) High School recorded four solo tackles and one assist in the contest; the Hawkeyes recorded five total sacks and held Minnesota to 86 net rushing yards. Nelson leads the Big Ten with five sacks and has 18 tackles through five games. He also collected three sacks versus Miami, Ohio, as a redshirt freshman.
Moss (6-0, 185) joined the Hawkeye program as a walk-on from Centennial High School in Ankeny, Iowa, and played primarily on special teams in Iowa’s first four games. Moss started for the first time at Minnesota and responded with four solo takles and one assist, to go with two interceptions.
Moss collected his first career theft in the end zone late in the second period. His second interception and 36-yard return led to a Hawkeye field goal and a 41-24 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Nelson is the second Hawkeye to earn Defensive Player of the Week honors this season, as sophomore defensive end A.J. Epenesa was the co-recipient following Iowa’s win over Iowa State. Moss is Iowa’s first Freshman of the Week in 2018.
The Hawkeyes (4-1, 1-1) travel to Indiana (4-2, 1-2) Saturday (11 a.m. CT, ESPN2).
Braxton Lewis
IRVING, Texas – Iowa State junior safety Braxton Lewis was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after his performance in Iowa State’s 48-42 win over No. 25 Oklahoma State on Saturday.
A native of Overland Park, Kan., Lewis was a key player in Iowa State’s effort on defense, leading the team in tackles with seven and picking off a key fourth-quarter pass.
Lewis also had on tackle for loss to help the Cyclones establish a new school record for stops behind the line of scrimmage with 16.
Lewis leads the Big 12 and ranks fourth nationally in interceptions per game at 0.6. He has picked off a pass in three-straight games, tying for the fifth-best streak in school history.
Brock Purdy
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State true freshman QB Brock Purdy earned a number of national awards after his impressive performance in Iowa State’s 48-42 victory over No. 25 Oklahoma State in Stillwater on Saturday.
He was named CBS Sports National Freshman of the Week, Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, a Star of the Week by the Manning Award and tabbed a Davey O’Brien Award Great 8 performer.
Seeing his first significant amount of snaps, Purdy responded with an incredible debut, tallying 402 yards of total offense (318 passing, 84 rushing) en route to the 8th-best single-game total offense effort in school history. He completed 18 of his 23 passes.
A native of Gilbert, Ariz., Purdy accounted for five touchdowns in the game, four by pass and one by rush. His four passing touchdowns ties for the third-best single-game total in Iowa State history and all of them were strikes of 20 yards or longer.
Purdy’s 29-yard touchdown run is the longest rush of the season by a Cyclone and his 60-yard touchdown pass to Tarique Milton in the fourth quarter is the longest play from scrimmage by ISU this season.
Purdy entered the game after the first series with the Cyclones trailing 7-0. His poise and performance helped the Cyclones claim their third-straight win over a ranked team on the road.
Purdy’s only other action was two snaps in the Akron game.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Turns out the Kansas City Chiefs can play a little defense, too. The Chiefs’ beleaguered bunch forced Jacksonville quarterback Blake Bortles into five turnovers, including a pick-6 by defensive tackle Chris Jones, and Kansas City merely had to supplement with the NFL’s highest-scoring offense in a 30-14 romp over the Jaguars on Sunday. Patrick Mahomes threw for 313 yards and ran for a touchdown, though he also threw his first two picks of the season, and Kareem Hunt added 87 yards and a touchdown on the ground as the Chiefs (5-0) marched all over the league’s top-ranked defense at soggy Arrowhead Stadium.
Tyreek Hill, who was frequently matched up with the Jaguars’ Jalen Ramsey in an entertaining one-on-one affair, had four catches for 61 yards in a game that grew testy on both sides. Jones was ejected in the second half after he dropped an elbow on a Jaguars lineman while both were on the ground following a point-after attempt. Pass rusher Dee Ford joined him in the locker room later in the half when he was whistled for his second unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Hunt was flagged for head-butting linebacker Telvin Smith Jr. earlier in the game.
Nobody had a worse day than Bortles, though. He was 33 of 61 for 430 yards with a touchdown and four interceptions , and also ran for a TD — though most of his yardage came in garbage time. Bortles also was strip-sacked in the first half as early rains soaked the field. By that point, the Chiefs were on their way to a 20-0 halftime lead. Mahomes led them 73 yards on their first possession, finishing the drive himself with a short scramble for a touchdown. Then he led the league’s high-powered offense 82 yards for a field goal a few minutes later, leaving Jacksonville’s vaunted D second-guessing itself.
Meanwhile, the Jaguars’ offense was having all kinds of problems.
Jacksonville (3-2) drove inside the Kansas City 5 early in the second quarter, but an incomplete fade on third down and another incompletion on fourth turned the ball over. Bortles was strip-sacked on the first play of their next possession, and he threw the pick-6 to Jones on the first play of the next. Jacksonville’s calamitous half ended when Bortles, trying to force a pass into the end zone, instead bounced it off his offensive lineman’s helmet and right to Steven Nelson for another interception. In Bortles’ defense, his offensive line didn’t give him a whole lot of time. He was sacked five times and the Chiefs had another 11 hurries, spending most of the game right in his face. Bortles’ only real highlight came late in the game, when he escaped the collapsing pocket and angled toward the sideline, then lowered his shoulder to finish off a 21-yard touchdown run . The Jaguars recovered the onside kick, only for the Chiefs to force another turnover on downs.
INJURIES
Chiefs: OLBs Justin Houston (hamstring) and Tanoh Kpassagnon (ankle) and FSs Armani Watts (groin) and Eric Murray (lower leg) left the game in the first half. RG Laurent Duvernay-Tardif left in the final minutes with a left ankle injury.
