AMES, Iowa (AP) — For once, Marial Shayok couldn’t buy a basket. But when the Cyclones absolutely had to have one go down, the Big 12’s leading scorer came through. Talen Horton-Tucker scored 15 points, Shayok had 12 — including a crucial jumper with 25 seconds left — and No. 20 Iowa State held off Texas 65-60 on Saturday for its fifth win in six games.

Nick Weiler-Babb had 11 points and seven rebounds for the streaking Cyclones (17-5, 6-3 Big 12), who hit their last four field goals to avoid the upset. Iowa State led for nearly 36 minutes. But the outcome wasn’t certain until the final seconds. Horton-Tucker’s 3-pointer was answered by a 3 and two free throws from Kerwin Roach, keeping the Longhorns to within 59-56 with 2:09 left. Jaxson Hayes’ tip-in made it 59-58 with 1:31 left, but Weiler-Babb hit a bank shot to beat the buzzer and put the Cyclones ahead by 3.

Shayok, who finished just 3 of 14 from the floor, then drilled a 15-footer to make it 63-58.
He matched Roach at the line after that, and Matt Coleman missed a 3 that would have made it a one-point game with six seconds left.

The Cyclones led by as many as 13 in the first half. But after Shayok blew an open alley-oop dunk opportunity, Matt Coleman’s 3 gave Texas its first lead, 46-45, with 7:07 left. Weiler-Babb and Lindell Wigginton responded with back-to-back 3s to help put Iowa State back out in front, 52-48.
Roach finished with 19 points and Coleman had 13 points and five assists for Texas (12-10, 4-5), which made a game of it late despite committing 13 turnovers and shooting just 26 percent on 3s.

The Cyclones were flummoxed at times by the Longhorns’ length, and the zone defense Texas threw at them gave them fits. They also missed a flurry of alley-oops and easy layups. But it’s February, when getting the win is often enough.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Brady Ellingson scored 16 points, Nick McGlynn posted his eighth double-double of the season and Drake held off Indiana State 68-62 on Saturday. Ellingson knocked down 7 of 12 shots for the Bulldogs (17-6, 6-4 Missouri Valley Conference), who shot 48 percent from the floor. Ellingson, who came into the game shooting a conference-best 54.9 percent from 3-point range, sank 2 of 5 against the Sycamores (11-11, 3-7). McGlynn scored 12 and matched his career high with 13 rebounds. Noah Thomas added 12 points for Drake, which has won five of its last six games.

Indiana State led 34-31 at halftime and 56-55 on a Tyreke Key layup with 5:52 remaining in the game. But the Sycamores didn’t score another basket until Jordan Barnes nailed a 3-pointer with 29 seconds left to pull ISU within 65-62. Drake answered with a McGlynn dunk off an assist from Anthony Murphy and Garrett Sturtz added a free throw as the Bulldogs handed the Sycamores their first loss of the season — after 10 straight wins — when holding an opponent to 68 points or less.

Key led Indiana State with 23 points, but he missed all six of his 3-point tries as the Sycamores sank only 3 of 21 from distance. Bronson Kessinger came off the bench to score 16 on 7-of-7 shooting. Barnes added 12 points and five assists.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Bridget Carleton scored 19 points and No. 23 Iowa State cruised to an 81-52 win over Kansas State on Saturday. Ashley Joens added 16 points for the Cyclones (17-5, 7-3 Big 12 Conference), who have won three straight. Madison Wise and Kristin Scott had 14 points apiece. Wise and Joens both went 4 of 9 from distance and Iowa State was 11 of 29, the ninth game with at least 10 treys. Scott had 12 rebounds and Carleton eight with four assists and two steals.
The Cyclones won the first meeting 96-58 on Jan. 2.

Wise opened the game with a 3-pointer and minutes later Joens had a 7-0 run as Iowa State raced to a 12-2 lead. The difference was 10 at the end of the quarter and it was 34-17 at the half when the Cyclones scored the final eight points, four by Wise.

Kayla Goth and Peyton Williams had 15 points apiece for the Wildcats (13-9, 4-6), who have lost three in a row. Williams had nine rebounds, Goth six with six assists.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Luka Garza scored 19 points, Joe Wieskamp added 16 and Iowa stunned fifth-ranked Michigan 74-59, handing the Wolverines just their second loss of the season. Ryan Kriener scored 15 points with 10 rebounds for the Hawkeyes, who snapped a two-game losing streak with by far their biggest win of the season.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Deja Church and Akienreh Johnson both had career scoring highs of 19 points, Michigan dominated the boards and the Wolverines took a 90-81 victory over No. 13 Iowa. Church was 9-of-11 shooting and Johnson 6 of 9 with three 3-pointers for the Wolverines (13-9, 4-6 Big Ten), who lost to the Hawkeyes (16-5, 7-3) by 14 on Jan. 17.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Miles Mikolas is open to discussing a long-term deal with the St. Louis Cardinals rather than wait to go on the open market after the season. The 30-year-old right-hander returned to the major leagues last year after three seasons in Japan, agreeing to a $15.5 million, two-year contract with the Cardinals. He became a first-time All-Star, going 18-4 with a 2.83 ERA in 32 starts. His deal allows him to become a free agent after the 2019 World Series.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Just as they did 17 years ago, St. Louis football fans will watch the Rams and New England Patriots play in the Super Bowl. This time, the rooting interest has flipped. Many fans in St. Louis will be pulling for the Patriots and not their former team. The franchise’s success is salt in the wound for fans still bitter three years after owner Stan Kroenke moved the team back to Los Angeles.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Rams moved from St. Louis to Los Angeles, had seven head coaches and used 20 starting quarterbacks since losing to the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl 17 years ago. Meanwhile, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are still here and they’re going for their sixth NFL title in the rematch Sunday.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The NCAA has declared Kansas forward Silvio De Sousa ineligible for the remainder of this season and next season after his name surfaced in the FBI probe into college basketball corruption. Kansas said it intends to appeal the decision. The Jayhawks had withheld the 6-foot-9 De Sousa from competition this season, pending the results of the investigation.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas has lost three of four heading into Saturday’s showdown with Texas Tech, and what happens over the next four days could decide whether the No. 11 Jayhawks remain in the hunt for a 15th straight Big 12 title. They also have a trip to Kansas State on Tuesday night.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri plans to appeal soon what it called “unjust” penalties levied by the NCAA in an academic misconduct case. The school acknowledged that a former tutor did work for 12 student-athletes in football, baseball and softball, but it disputed the severity of the penalties after it self-reported the violations and assisted in the investigation. The appeals process could take six months or more.
