Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — The Cleveland Browns have signed troubled running back Kareem Hunt. Hunt was cut by Kansas City in November after a video showed him pushing and kicking a woman last February. Hunt was placed on the NFL’s commissioner’s exempt list before the Chiefs released him. He was in his second season with Kansas City and was one of the team’s best players. The Browns are giving the 23-year-old a chance to restart his career. He still could be suspended by the league under its personal conduct policy.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — The Southeastern and Big Ten conferences have a series of matchups with ranked teams that will have a big impact atop the league standings. Those games include No. 1 Tennessee’s trip to No. 5 Kentucky as the headliner on the week’s AP Top 25 schedule as well as No. 11 Michigan State’s visit to No. 20 Wisconsin. The week also includes No. 2 Duke’s trip to No. 16 Louisville in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Devon Dotson scored 25 points with six free throws in the final 40 seconds of overtime and No. 14 Kansas beat TCU 82-77. The Jayhawks won their second game in a row starting four freshmen. They never trailed in overtime after blowing a 12-point lead in the second half. TCU was trying to win consecutive games against Top 25 teams for the first time.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — The Browns are counting on Kareem Hunt not to run afoul. Cleveland signed the troubled running back to a 1-year contract, adding him to its roster following his release in Kansas City after a video surfaced of him pushing and kicking a woman. Hunt has been receiving counseling and vowed to improve. The NFL is still investigating the incident involving Hunt, who may face a lengthy suspension.

UNDATED (AP) — California authorities have filed criminal charges against Nebraska running back Maurice Washington. He is suspected of possessing a video of his underage high school girlfriend being sexually assaulted by two other people and sending that video to the girl less than a year ago. The university athletic department said it was aware of the situation and Washington’s attorney said his client would cooperate with authorities.
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — Former Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton has joined the Atlanta Falcons as a senior assistant. Sutton was fired by the Chiefs two days after a crushing 37-31 loss in the AFC championship game, when Kansas City failed to stop Tom Brady and the New England Patriots on what turned out to be the only possession of overtime. With the Falcons, Sutton will assist head coach Dan Quinn with game management, timeout usage and replay review.

DNR to recap hunting seasons, discuss possible rule changes at public meetings across the state

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

February 11th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hosting a series of town hall-style meetings where local staff will provide updates on recently completed hunting seasons, discuss possible changes to hunting rules and regulations, and address other topics as requested. Todd Bishop, chief of the Iowa DNR’s Wildlife Bureau, says “We want people to come out to these meetings, listen to the hunting seasons reviews, ask questions and hear directly from our staff. Part of the meeting will be devoted to discussing potential rule changes and collecting feedback as we work through the rules process.”

The meetings are open to the public. Comments collected from these public meetings will be considered along with other related comments received by the Iowa DNR prior to proposing changes to hunting rules and regulations. Proposed rules will be presented to the Natural Resource Commission during a regular public meeting for consideration and additional public comment.

These meetings replace the one night listening session held in late winter over the past 15 years. In our area, the meetings will be held:

  • In Creston, Feb. 21, 7 p.m., Multi-Purpose Room adjacent to the YMCA, Southwestern Community College
  • In Sac City, Feb. 26, 7 p.m., Sac County Conservation Center at Hagge Park, 2970 280th Street
  • And in Council Bluffs, Feb. 26, 7 p.m., Fish and Game Club, 531 Commanche Street

Any person attending the public meeting and has special requirements, such as those related to mobility or hearing impairments, should contact the Iowa DNR or ADA Coordinator at 515-725-8200, Relay Iowa TTY Service 800-735-7942, or Webmaster@dnr.iowa.gov, and advise of specific needs.

Bohannon nets winner, lifts No. 20 Iowa past Northwestern

Sports

February 11th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s Jordan Bohannon feels most comfortable at the end of games, and it showed against Northwestern. Bohannon hit a 3-pointer from 23 feet with three-tenths of a second remaining as No. 20 Iowa rallied from a 13-point deficit and beat Northwestern 80-79 Sunday night.

It was the second straight game the Bohannon played hero for the Hawkeyes (19-5, 8-5, Big Ten). And again, it was his long-range shooting that did the trick. Bohannon scored his first points with 5:28 to go on a jumper and finished with 15 points with 3-for-4 shooting from 3-point range.

Freshman Joe Wieskamp scored 21 points, including a 3-pointer that was part of the Hawkeyes’ comeback with less than six minutes remaining. Tyler Cook had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Isaiah Moss scored 16 points on 6-for-12 shooting. Vic Law had 24 points and 10 rebounds, Ryan Taylor scored 16 points, A.J. Turner added 15 and Dererk Pardon scored 13 for Northwestern (12-11, 3-9).

Iowa has won three straight and sit three games behind Michigan in the Big Ten Conference standings. The Hawkeyes’ comeback all but ensures they stay firmly inside the AP Top 25, especially given the number of ranked teams that lost in the last week.

UP NEXT – Iowa is at Rutgers on Saturday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Megan Gustafson had 19 of her 29 points in the second half when No. 16 Iowa pulled away for a 78-52 win over Ohio State on Sunday. Kathleen Doyle added 16 points for the Hawkeyes (19-5, 10-3 Big Ten), who have won three straight and eight of the last nine.

Gustafson also had 16 rebounds for her 77th career double-double, tying the conference record with former Ohio State star Jantel Lavender. Last Monday, Gustafson received her record 20th conference player of the week award, one more than Lavender. Gustafson has scored 20 or more points in 12 of 13 conference games and 21 overall to lead the nation at 27.2 points a game.

Doyle and Gustafson combined for the first eight points of the game and the Hawkeyes led 19-9 after one quarter. Aaliyah Patty scored eight points in the second quarter and her layup at the 2:52 mark gave Ohio State at 27-26 lead. A Gustafson jumper and Doyle’s 3-point play put Iowa on top 31-27 at the half.

Gustafson opened the second-half scoring with a 3-point play and had 15 points in the quarter to help Iowa take a 58-37 lead. Dorka Juhasz led the Buckeyes (10-12, 6-7) with 12 points. Iowa shot 69 percent in the second half while the Buckeyes were at 28. The Hawkeyes lead the nation in shooting at 52.3 percent.
