CAM girls surge in second half for win over ACGC

The CAM girls basketball team pulled away in the second half for a 51-38 win over ACGC on Monday night in Guthrie Center. The Cougars led 25-19 at halftime and doubled that lead by the end of the third. CAM Head Coach Joe Wollum said the offense executed better as the game moved along.

The Cougars had some great balanced scoring on the night. Eva Steffensen and Kiera Nichols had 10 points each and Meredith Rich and Mallory Behnken both had 9 points on the night. Coach Wollum said they stress getting balanced production.

CAM improved to 10-2 on the season. The Cougars host Paton-Churdan on Tuesday and Exira-EHK on Friday. We’ll have that Friday meeting with the Spartans on KJAN.

ACGC was led by 9 points from Alaina Bunde. The Chargers fall to 8-6 on the season and will be back at it on Tuesday with a road trip to Ogden.

Sturtz’ late free throws send Drake past SIU

The Drake Bulldogs squeaked out a 60-59 win over Southern Illinois on Monday night. The Bulldogs led 35-27 at half but needed a pair of free throws from Garrett Sturtz with 23 seconds left to get the win.

The Salukis opened the second half on a 14-0 run to grab the lead and the game became a see saw after that. Southern Illinois grabbed a 59-58 lead with 38 seconds left on a hoop in the lane by Marcus Domask. Sturtz then drew the foul to grab the lead back for good.

Sturtz finished with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Tucker DeVries added 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. The Bulldogs improved to 13-5 on the season.

Drake has a quick turnaround with a Wednesday home game against Bradley at 7:00 p.m.

Colby, Van Ness earn FWAA Freshman All-America Honors

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa football student-athletes – offensive guard Connor Colby and defensive tackle Lukas Van Ness – were named to the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Freshman All-America Team on Monday.

Colby (6-foot-6, 298-pounds) is a native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and attended Kennedy High School. He joined the Hawkeyes last spring and started 11 of 14 games at right guard in his first college season. He earlier earned Freshman All-America honors from the Maxwell Football Club.

Van Ness (6-5, 264) redshirted his first season before seeing action in 2021. The native of Barrington, Illinois (Barrington High School) collected 33 tackles, including 17 solo stops while playing in all 14 games. Van Ness tied for the team lead with seven sacks and had 8.5 tackles for loss, three pressures and one pass break-up.

Van Ness also earned freshman All-America honors from the Maxwell Football Club and earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition as well.

Iowa joins Ohio State and Texas A&M as the only programs with multiple players on the honor squad.

Iowa posted a 10-4 overall record in 2021 while winning the Big Ten West Division with a 7-2 mark. The Hawkeyes competed in the Vrbo Citrus Bowl to conclude the season. Iowa was ranked 23rd in the final national rankings, marking the fourth straight season the Hawkeyes have been in the final rankings.

Kalscheur named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State guard Gabe Kalscheur has been named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after hitting six 3-pointers to lead the Cyclones to a 79-70 win over Texas on Saturday. It is Kalscheur’s third honor of the season.

Kalscheur averaged 18.0 points and was 10-for-21 behind the arc last week as the Cyclones split a pair of games against nationally-ranked opponents. Against Texas, Kalscheur drilled 6-of-12 3-pointers and finished with 22 points, while also chipping in three assists, two steals and two rebounds.

Earlier in the week, Kalscheur was 4-for-9 from 3-point range and finished with 14 points in a one-point loss at Kansas.

KU’s Ochai Agbaji was named Big 12 Player of the Week.

Kalscheur and the Cyclones return to action Tuesday at Texas Tech (8 p.m., ESPNU).

Clark earns 3rd-consecutive Big Ten Player of the Week honor

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa sophomore Caitlin Clark was named Big Ten Co-Player of the week, the conference announced Monday. Clark shares the honor with Ohio State’s Jacy Sheldon.

Clark has tallied 27-career Big Ten weekly honors – 13 freshman, nine player and five honor roll. This is her third-consecutive Big Ten Player of the Week honor and fourth this season.

The West Des Moines, Iowa, native averaged 27.5 points, 9.5 assists, nine rebounds and shot 92.9 percent from the free-throw line in the Hawkeyes’ wins over Purdue and Nebraska. She was 26-for-28 from the free-throw line and drew 22 fouls.

Against Nebraska, Clark registered her third season double-double and fourth career double-double, recording 31 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. She added four steals and two blocks and shot a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line, while drawing 10 fouls of her 22 fouls for the week.

Clark and the Hawkeyes head to Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Thursday to take on the Minnesota Gophers inside Williams Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. (CT) on B1G Network.

ISU-Utah Valley dual postponed

AMES, Iowa – Due to recent COVID-19 developments within the Utah Valley wrestling program, the dual scheduled for Jan. 23 between the Cyclones and Wolverines has been postponed.

Iowa State is still scheduled to face North Dakota State on Jan. 23, with that match starting at 2 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.

Both Iowa State and Utah Valley will look for a date in the remaining schedule to have the postponed dual.
