Griswold boys find a spark in big win over Essex

Sports

January 7th, 2022 by admin

The Griswold boys basketball team built a 20 point lead by halftime and roared to a 73-34 win over Essex on Friday night in Griswold.  Kamron Brownlee had 13 first half points to propel the Tigers to the lead and he finished with 16 on the night. The start of the second half was a touch sluggish until the Tigers ratcheted up the defensive intensity that sparked an 11-0 run to grab all the momentum. The Tigers got a bucket from Adam Houser and Landon Pelzer immediately stole the ensuing inbound and got a layup. The Tigers followed that with another steal and score to force an Essex time out. Tigers head coach Matthew Spunaugle said they really needed to inject some energy into the game.

The Tigers had good ball pressure all night and Coach Spunaugle said sound defense has been a point of emphasis.

Houser finished with 19 points to lead Griswold and freshman Peyton Cook also added 16. The Tigers improved to 2-7 on the season with the victory.

Essex was led by 11 points from Tony Racine in the loss and they remain winless at 0-8.

Essex girls find their groove in second half for win over Griswold

Sports

January 7th, 2022 by admin

The Essex Trojanettes held Griswold to 11 second half points and found a scoring groove of their own to pick up a 51-35 win over the Tigers on Friday night. Griswold led by 7 early in the game but Essex climbed within 2 at the end of the first. The Trojanettes grabbed their first lead momentarily near the end of the 2nd at 22-21, but McKenna Wiechman hit a three to put the Tigers up 24-22 at the break. Essex grabbed the lead in the third and clamped down in the fourth, only allowing 2 Tiger points to secure their third win of the year.

Wiechman had 15 points in the first half but only added 3 more in the second. The Trojanettes ran a box and one on Wiechman to limit her touches in the second half and it proved successful. Brenna Rossell finished with 7 points and had a number of great looks just rim out throughout the game. The Tigers fall to 1-9 on the season.

Essex was led by 10 from Hailee Barrett and 9 from Desi Glasgo who hit a couple of big threes in the second half. The Trojanettes are now 3-6 on the season.

Iowa falls at No. 23 Wisconsin

Sports

Wisconsin jumped out to a 13 point halftime lead and cruised to an 87-78 win over Iowa in Madison. The 23rd ranked Badgers shot 50 percent for the game and clobbered the Hawkeyes on the glass with a 43-26 rebounding advantage, including 15 offensive rebounds.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery. Johnny Davis led Wisconsin with 26 points but the Badgers took control by dominating the paint.

Keegan Murray led Iowa with 27 points. Kris Murray added 12 and says the Hawks struggled on defense.

Murray says rebounding needs to improve before next Thursday’s game against Indiana.

Stay safe as Iowa lakes freeze over

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

January 6th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Iowa DNR News) –  The recent blast of arctic air is growing ice on lakes and ponds over much of Iowa. Anglers are ready to get out for the popular early ice fishing season. “Many of us can’t wait to get out on the ice each winter,” said Joe Larscheid, chief of fisheries for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). “Ice fishing is a fun, inexpensive activity for anglers of all ages to get outdoors and avoid cabin fever.” The DNR recommends a minimum of four inches of clear ice for fishing and at least five inches for snowmobiles and ATVs.

“Check ice thickness as you make your way to your favorite fishing spot,” Larscheid said. “Ice conditions change constantly and its thickness can vary across the lake. Trust your instincts – if the ice does not look right, don’t go out.”

A blanket of snow on top of an ice-covered lake insulates the ice, slowing the growth of ice and hiding potential hazards or weak spots. River ice is 15 percent weaker than lake ice.  Ice with a bluish color is safer than clear ice.  Avoid slushy or honey-combed ice and stay away from dark spots on the ice.  Don’t walk into areas where the snow cover looks discolored.

Safety Tips on the Ice

  • No ice is 100 percent safe.
  • New ice is usually stronger than old ice.
  • Don’t go out alone – if the worst should happen, someone will be there to call for help or to help rescue.
  • Let someone know where you are going and when you will return.
  • Check ice thickness as you go out – there could be pockets of thin ice or places where ice recently formed.
  • Avoid off-colored snow or ice. It is usually a sign of weakness.
  • The insulating effect of snow slows down the freezing process.
  • Bring along these basic items to help keep you safe: hand warmers, ice cleats to help prevent falls, ice picks (wear around your neck) to help you crawl out of the water if you fall in, a life jacket, a floating safety rope, a whistle to call for help, a basic first aid kit and extra dry clothes including a pair of gloves.
