Midwest Derecho places third in 2020 National Disaster costs

January 8th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

Officials with the National Weather Service report the August, 2020 derecho which heavily impacted Iowa and four other Midwestern states, was only outdone by Hurricane Laura and the collective Western Wildfires in terms of estimated cost. The data compiled by NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), shows the Derecho racked-up $11 Billion in damage. The August 10th event began in southeast South Dakota and swept through to Ohio – a 770 mile trip – in a span of just 14 hours, with widespread wind gusts greater than 100 miles per hour. Four people died as a result of the weather phenomenon.

Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana and Ohio were the states most affected by the event that caused millions of dollars damage to acres of corn and soybeans across central Iowa. There was also severe damage to homes, businesses and vehicles, particularly in Cedar Rapids. In addition, there were 15 tornadoes across northeastern Illinois, affecting the Chicago metropolitan area. Officials say it was the third severe weather event (since 1980) with inflation-adjusted costs over $10-billion, joining the late-April and May 2011 tornado outbreaks across the Southeastern and Central states, respectively.

The number one weather event, in terms of cost, was the August-27th/28th impact of a Category 4 Hurricane named “Laura,” which hit southwest Louisiana with winds of up to 150 mph and a storm surge of more than 15 feet. It was the strongest hurricane to hit Louisiana since 1856, and cost $19-billion.The Weather Service said 46 people died during the event.  The second costliest weather event, was the Western Wildfires affecting California, Oregon and Washington State. A total of 46 people died. Colorado also had historic levels of fire damage. The flames raged across more than 10.2-million acres from August 1st through December 30th, costing an estimated $16.5-billion in damage.

Number four on the list, was Hurricane Sally, a CAT 2 hurricane taking place from Sept. 15th to 17th, and which made landfall in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Altogether it caused an estimated $7.3-billion damage, and resulted in five persons dead.

A change in spectator allowance has been made for this Saturday’s Rollin Dyer Wrestling Tournament in Atlantic. Due to the Governor’s change in spectator restrictions Atlantic Athletic Director Andy Mitchell said they have decided to allow two spectators per wrestler for the tournament. This will allow for more spectators for the event but still provide for enough space to maintain social distancing with the large number of teams participating.

Breece Hall becomes ISU’s first unanimous All-American

Sports

January 8th, 2021 by admin

AMES, Iowa – For the first time in Iowa State football history, the Cyclones have an unanimous All-American.

This incredible accomplishment was achieved today when running back Breece Hall, the nation’s leading rusher with 1,572 yards, made First Team All-American by the Walter Camp Foundation.

To be considered an unanimous All-American a player must receive first team All-America status from all five of the major news services or outlets. The top-five consists of the following: AP, FWAA, AFCA, Sporting News and Walter Camp.

Iowa State legend Troy Davis, who finished second in the 1996 Heisman Trophy balloting, was a first team selection in four of the five outlets, but was a second-teamer by the AFCA.

The sophomore, who finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy balloting, recorded one of the greatest individual seasons in school history in 2020.

The Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and finalist for the Doak Walker Award, Hall made a swift rise to one of the nation’s elite running backs in 2020 by leading the nation in rushing yards (1,572) and 100-yard rushing games (9).

With 75+ rushing yards and at least one rush TD in all 12 games season, Hall has been the most consistent running back in the nation. His 12-game streak with a rushing TD is the longest active streak in the nation and the best string in the history of Cyclone football.

The versatile back is among the nation’s leaders in rushing TDs (21- 2nd nationally), overall TDs (23- 2nd nationally) and scoring (138- 2nd nationally).

Hall broke school single-season school marks in total touchdowns (23) and scoring (138), and equaled Davis’ school rushing TD mark in a season with 21.

Hall, who averaged 131.0 rushing yards per game, caught 23 passes for 180 yards and two TDs to help him average 146.0 yards from scrimmage per game.

Hall also proved to be one of the most elusive and explosive backs nationally. He leads the nation in yards after contact (950), first down rushes (79), and is third nationally in 20-yard rushes (14).

He has lost just one fumble in 511 career touches.

Statistics alone makes Hall’s season incredible, but perhaps his biggest accomplishment on the year is his impact on winning. The Cyclones, ranked 10th nationally in the final CFP poll, claimed first place in the Big 12 regular-season standings, tied a school record for wins in a season (9) and earned a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game for the first time in school history.

Hall rushed for 136 yards and had two TDs in Iowa State’s 34-17 victory over No. 25 Oregon in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl, the school’s first-ever appearance in a New Year’s Six Bowl.

Daviyon Nixon unanimous All-American

Sports

January 8th, 2021 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa junior defensive tackle Daviyon Nixon was named a first-team selection and redshirt sophomore center Tyler Linderbaum was named a second-team selection on the Walter Camp All-America Team on Thursday night.

Nixon, who declared for the 2021 NFL Draft and will forego his senior season, has now earned first-team All-America recognition on all five All-America teams to become the ninth unanimous consensus All-America selection in school history. Linebacker Josey Jewell was Iowa’s most recent unanimous All-American selection in 2017.

Nixon, a Kenosha, Wisconsin, native, is Iowa’s sixth consensus All-American in the last seven years and 27th player in school history to be named a consensus All-American and 29th overall (Calvin Jones (1954, ’55 and Larry Station (1984, ’85) were honored twice).

Nixon is Iowa’s first consensus defensive lineman since Adrian Clayborn in 2010 and first consensus defensive tackle since Jared DeVries in 1998. Nixon is the sixth defensive lineman in school history to garner consensus All-American status.

Nixon, the Nagurski-Woodson Defensive Player of the Year and the Smith-Brown Defensive Lineman of the Year in the Big Ten, led the conference in tackles for loss (33), tied for the conference lead in sacks (5.5), and had the most tackles by a Big Ten defensive lineman (41).

Linderbaum, a Solon, Iowa native, earned second-team All-America recognition on three teams (Walter Camp, FWAA, and AP) and was a first-team All-America selection by The Athletic and Pro Football Focus.

Linderbaum started every game at center for the second straight year. He anchored an offensive line that helped the Iowa offense rank second in the Big Ten in fewest sacks allowed, first downs, fourth down conversions, and scoring offense, and third in red zone offense.
