Shelby County implementing new practices for county-owned cropland bids

(Harlan, Iowa) – Shelby County Auditor Mark Maxwell reports new practices for Shelby County owned cropland in Shelby County are being used this year. Maxwell says there will not be an auction this year.  The Board of Supervisors and the Solid Waste Board will collect sealed bids at the Auditors office until November 17th and be opened on November 21st, 2023 at the regularly scheduled Board of Supervisors meeting.  Bid packets for both properties are available at the Auditors office or by calling 755-3831 extension 6.

Shelby County and the Shelby County Solid Waste Board each have farm ground available for rent for the 2024 crop season.  The Shelby County Farm is approximately 145 acres. The Solid Waste Board Farm located at the county landfill is approximately 103 acres. Separate sealed bids are required for each farm.

The bids must be received in the Auditors office by November 17th at 4:30 pm. A 10% down payment is due upon acceptance of the highest bid by the Supervisors.

Large Field Fire reported in SE Shelby County

(Update 3:45-p.m.: All responding Atlantic & Marne units have been told to disregard the field fire page.)

(Elk Horn, Iowa) – Firefighters with the Marne and Atlantic Fire Departments were requested to assist other firefighters in in Shelby County in battling a field fire south of Elk Horn this (Friday) afternoon. The fire was approaching a residence in the vicinity of Highway 173 and 500th Street.

There are also reports of a field fire in Pottawattamie County. Yesterday (Thursday), there were two separate reports of combine fires in the area.

Board of Regents to seek additional mental health funding for students

(Radio Iowa) – The Board of Regents will seek an additional one million dollars from the Iowa Legislature to address the mental health needs of students. Regent Abby Crow of Tiffin made a motion for the money during Thursday’s meeting, citing discussions with students.

“A central point of our conversation was the need for expanded mental health services and the benefits this will bring to our students at our Regent Universities,” she says. “Student leaders also provided us with a unanimous letter imploring us as Regents to support their efforts for expanded mental health resources and funding.” Crow says it is not the first time the issue has been discussed.

“I know as regents we’ve heard these needs presented consistently in recent years by students and university administrators highlighting an opportunity we have to address a central issue that touches the lives of many,” Crow says. She says if the funding is approved, the students want to continue their involvement.

“Our student leaders at our Regent universities would be extremely grateful to be involved in further conversations going forward regarding the specific allocation of this funding,” she says, “and offer their insight as to what specific mental health related resources programming or staffing might do the most good at their respective institutions.”

The Board voted to approve the request, which will go to the Iowa Legislature in January. Crow graduated from the University of Iowa in May 2023 with a degree in human physiology and a minor in biology. Her board biography says her goal is to pursue a career in the medical field, and is currently a nursing assistant at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Warmer winter may be ahead for Iowa

(Radio Iowa) – The calendar says fall but the thermometer says summer. Forecasters say much of Iowa’s southern half will see near-record high temperatures in the low 90s today (Friday) through Sunday. State climatologist Justin Glisan says it could be the start of a trend as the El Nino pattern is setting up, which may mean Iowans will be facing a warmer-than-normal winter ahead.

“We are getting a clear signal in the climate prediction outlooks for December, January, February, meteorological winter, which are showing elevated chances of warmer conditions across the upper Midwest including Iowa,” Glisan says. “This meshes well with previous years in which we’ve seen El Nino in wintertime and into early spring.” Glisan says it’s still too early to predict how much precipitation may fall in the winter ahead, including rain, freezing rain and snow.

“So we’ve had years in which we’ve seen above-average precipitation, we’ve seen years in which we’ve been below-average,” Glisan says, “so as of right now, not a clear signal in terms of precipitation, but definitely we’re looking at the potential for a warmer winter.”

While traditional calendars have winter starting on December 21st this year, the climatological winter Glisan referred to is from December 1st through the end of February.

Time once again for the Trumpeter Swan Contest in Cass County

(Atlantic, Iowa) – It’s that time of year once again, when the Cass County Conservation Board asks “When do you think the first Trumpeter Swan will arrive at the Schildberg Quarry?” Please call in your prediction (by November 10th) to the Conservation Board at 712-769-2372, leave a message and return phone number if their staff are not in.

Duplicate dates will not be allowed. For example, if a caller predicts November 25th, no one else will be allowed to predict that arrival date. So, call anytime until November 10th to make your prediction! One prediction per family, please. The sponsors of this contest will determine the official arrival of more than 6 trumpeter swans to Lake 4, and if they arrive before the Nov. 10th no more dates will be taken.

The winner will receive a Trumpeter Swan Prize from the Cass County Conservation Board. Sorry, this contest is only for residents of Cass County.

Trumpeter Swans have visited the Schildberg Quarry for, at least, Twenty-four out of the last twenty-five winters. Arrival and departure dates of the swans have been as follows:

Hawkeyes to Play in Yale Invitational

THIS WEEK

The University of Iowa women’s golf team travels to New Haven, Connecticut, for the Yale Invitational. The 54-hole tournament will be held from Sept. 30- Oct. 1 at Yale Golf Course (par 70, 6,076-yards). The Hawkeyes will begin the tournament Sunday with an 8:30 a.m. (CT) shotgun start.

THE LINEUP

Iowa’s third tournament of the season lineup includes: sophomore Kaitlyn Hanna, sophomore Shannyn Vogler, freshman Ximena Benites, sophomore Madison Dabagia and junior Paula Miranda.

 

THE FIELD

The 13-team field includes: Arkansas-Little Rock, Boston University, Columbia, Dartmouth, DePauw, Fairfield, Florida Gulf Coast, Harvard, Iowa, Quinnipiac, Pennsylvania, Williams College and Yale.

 

THE COURSE

The Yale Course was recognized as No. 1 rated, best golf course in Connecticut in 2020 by GOLF Magazine. This 6,076-yard, par-70 course has large greens with deep bunkers and wide, rolling fairways that are the core of Yale’s strategic and penal character. The course has been the site of numerous NCAA Regional Golf Championships as well as being the home of the Nike Connecticut Open.

Blazek, Murphy Pace Hawkeyes at Joe Piane Invite

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – University of Iowa cross country wrapped up the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invite on Friday morning. Junior Max Murphy led the Hawkeye men against a loaded field, finishing in the top-20 of the five-mile race.

Competing for the first time since the Hawkeye Invite on Sept. 1, Murphy returned to action in strong form, finishing in 23:56.8. Following the first split after mile one, Murphy pushed into the top-20 and held that position throughout the race to take 20th overall. Sophomore Miles Sheppard continued to impress, crossed the finish line at 24:55.6. Senior Jack Pendergast finished with a time of 25:00.8, while freshman Miles Wilson finished in the top five of Iowa runners for the second time in as many races with his 25:04.2. Sophomore Brayden Burnett scored for the first time this season, wrapping up his five-mile race in 25:17.0.

The men’s team placed 17th and scored 400 points.

Of the eight Iowa runners in the women’s 5,000-meter race, the Hawkeyes set six personal bests. Sophomore Jalyssa Blazek was the top Iowa finisher for the first time in her career, clocking a 17:56.2 and crushing her previous best by over 90 seconds. Senior Amber Aesoph was right behind with her personal best 17:59.4, while senior Alli Bookin-Nosbisch was the third Hawkeye to cross the line in 18:01.4 to improve on a career best set back in 2021.

Senior Grace Bookin-Nosbisch (18:04.2) and sophomore Aleah Tenpas (18:06.3 – PR) rounded out the top five for Iowa. Senior Abby Ryon (18:10.6) also registered a personal best on Friday morning.

“Today was a great step in the right direction and it was awesome to see us compete against several teams ranked in the top-10,” Iowa assistant distance coach Shayla Houlihan said of the women’s team. “I thought each of these women executed the race plan almost perfectly. The trust and communication they have amongst each other on the course is something that is special to watch unfold as a coach. We’ll continue to utilize that pack running mentality as we move closer to the championship portion of our season.

The women’s team finished in 15th place and earned 381 points.

In the women’s open 5,000 meters, freshmen Cameron Kalaway and Audra Soderlind set personal bests of 18:23.4 and 18:38.7, respectively. Senior Kelli Tosic made her season debut and crossed the line in 18:48.4. The men’s five-mile open featured three Hawkeyes (sophomore Nate Harbert – 26:16.4; freshman Luke Knepp – 26:17.4; junior Yohana Yual – 26:32.2).

NEXT UP: The Hawkeyes return to action on Friday, October 13, for their regular season finale at the Bradley Pink Classic in Peoria, Illinois.

Pedestrian from NC struck and killed in Fremont County, Friday morning

(Sidney, Iowa) – A woman from North Carolina died this (Friday) morning in Fremont County, when she was struck by a semi tractor-trailer. The Iowa State Patrol reports a 2012 Kenworth semi driven by 44-year-old Jeffrey Hartley, of Glenwood, was leaving a parking/fueling area traveling eastbound. When Hartley turned south from a truck stop onto 211th Avenue north of Highway 2, the semi he was driving ran over 65-year-old Debora Lee Turbett, of Lexington, NC, as she was walking west across 211th.

The woman died at the scene. The semi is registered to Scales Sales and Service, out of Glenwood. The Patrol was assisted in their investigation by the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office.

Burn Ban for Shelby County beginning Oct. 1st

(Harlan, Iowa) – Officials with the Shelby County Emergency Management Agency report the County will be going into a burn ban, starting Sunday, October 1st. The ban is being implemented due to a high fire danger, and water shortages around the county. The Shelby County EMA will update residents when the ban is lifted.
