JOY A. DOWNING, 85, of Adair, died Saturday, June 10th, at the Community Care Center in Stuart. Funeral services for JOY DOWNING will be held 2:30-p.m. Saturday, June 17th, at the United Methodist Church in Adair. Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home has the arrangements.

Visitation at the United Methodist Church in Adair, is from 1-until 2:30-p.m., Saturday (prior to the service).

Burial will be in the Sunnyhill Cemetery at Adair.

The family strongly requests memorials be directed to the United Methodist Church of Adair.

Friends may call at the funeral home, where the family will be present 6-p.m. Wednesday, June 14th.

LEONARD PETSCHE, 83, of Harlan, died Saturday, June 10th, at Bergan Mercy Medical Center. A Mass of Christian Burial for LEONARD PETSCHE will be held 10:30-a.m. Thursday, June 15th, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Visitation at the funeral home is from 3-until 8-p.m. Wednesday, June 14th. There is no Wake service.

Burial will be in the Harlan Cemetery.

WILLIAM “Bill” FRANK TRUE, 85, of Avoca, died Friday, June 9th, at home. Funeral services for BILL TRUE will be held 10-a.m. Wed., June 14th, at the United Church of Avoca. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Avoca has the arrangements.

Visitation at the funeral home is from 5-until 7-p.m. Tuesday, June 13th, with a Prayer service at 7-p.m.

Inurnment will be atthe Graceland Cemetery in Avoca, at a later date.

His wife – Joyce [Barker] True, of Avoca.

His sons – Terry (Connie) Pieken, of Waterloo; Tim (Linda) Pieken, and Bill True II, all of Avoca.

Stanton man arrested Sunday night on assault charge; Hastings man arrested on warrant in Montgomery County

Sheriff’s officials in Montgomery County report the arrest at around 10:24-p.m. Sunday, of 22-year old Cody Benjamin Carrol Johnson, of rural Stanton. Johnson was taken into custody for Domestic Abuse Assault and transported to the Montgomery County Jail, where he was being held without bond.

And, at around 9:25-p.m., Sunday, deputies arrested 43-year old Jerry Lee Dawson, of Hastings, following a traffic stop on Highway 48. Dawson was taken into custody under the authority of a warrant charging him with Violation of Probation on an original, Possession of a Controlled Substance charge. His cash-only bond was set at $1,000.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A fiscal analysis shows federal grant funding to Iowa would drop by more than $100 million under President Donald Trump’s proposed budget. The plan would force the state to reduce services or find other funding for programs ranging from early education to job training. The analysis was posted this month by the nonpartisan Legislative Services Agency. It offers the first details about what Trump’s proposed federal budget could mean for Iowa.

NORTH ENGLISH, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a domestic disturbance in southeast Iowa led to the fatal shooting of a man by an officer. The Iowa County Sheriff’s Office says in a news release that its deputies and Williamsburg Police were called around 8:30 p.m. Saturday for a domestic disturbance involving a gun at a house in North English. The sheriff’s department said the confrontation culminated in an officer shooting a man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

ALTOONA, Iowa (AP) — The mayor of Altoona, Josiah “Skip” Conkling, has died following an illness he had been battling since January. He was 71. Hamilton’s Funeral Service in Altoona says Conkling died Friday at Prairie View Village in Altoona. Conkling had served as mayor in Altoona since 2012. Before that, he served on the Altoona City Council for 16 years.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Family, teachers and friends are remembering an eastern Iowa teen who reached her goal last week of graduating from high school _ just two days before she died after a months-long battle with cancer. The Telegraph Herald reports that 18-year-old Allison Cress graduated from Hempstead High School in Dubuque on June 3. The feat came after she was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer in September a little more than two weeks after starting her senior year.

Jobe wins senior event in Iowa by 1 shot

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Brandt Jobe won the PGA Tour Champions event Sunday by one shot, finishing at 14-under 202 for his first victory in 19 years. Jobe shot a 69 in the final round to snap a winless drought that had stretched back to 1998, when he took first in a tournament in Japan.

Scott McCarron, who won in Iowa in 2016, was second at 13 under after shooting a final round 66. Kevin Sutherland holed out for an eagle on No. 18 to join McCarron at 203.

Money leader Bernhard Langer finished at 12 under, while Scott Verplank, Tom Lehman and Steve Flesch were another shot back. Marco Dawson and Stephen Ames finished at 207.

Fowler homers as Cardinals sweep Phillies with 6-5 win

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Dexter Fowler hit a three-run homer and Adam Wainwright tossed five solid innings, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 6-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday. St. Louis has won three in a row following a season-high seven-game losing streak.

Daniel Nava homered for the Phillies, who have dropped five in a row. Philadelphia led 2-0 before Fowler connected against Aaron Nola (3-4) in the fifth inning. It was his ninth homer in his first season with St. Louis.

Next up for the Cardinals is a day/evening doubleheader against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday. The first game begin at 1:15-p.m., the second at 7:15-p.m.
