Authorities in Montgomery County are investigating a burglary which occurred at a property located west of Stanton. Sheriff’s officials say the investigation began at around 8:35-a.m Sunday (7/22), at a machine shed in the 2300 block of 230th Street, where someone took a blue 1989 Honda Four-track ATV. The machine has a blue 12-gallon wand sprayer on the front.

Officials say the owner is willing to provide a cash reward for the recovery of the ATV. Anyone with information with regard to the theft, is urged to contact the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office at 712-623-5107, or Crimestoppers, at 1-800-432-1001.

Iowa’s corn crop is struggling due to the drought, but the plants are tall enough to cause some problems on roadways. Jeremey Vortherms, a safety engineer with the Iowa Department of Transportation, is reminding motorists to approach rural intersections with extreme caution.  “As the corn comes up in height, it cuts off some of the sight triangles at the intersections – making it hard to see oncoming traffic from other approaches,” Vortherms said. There are normally about 50 crashes each year in Iowa due to sight obstruction on rural gravel intersections and driveways. “So, it’s not a (large) number, but it represents a certain risk to drivers who use those type of roads,” Vortherms said. Most rural intersections are not marked with stop or yield signs. Some motorists speed through those intersections if they don’t see dust from an approaching vehicle.

Even with the lack of rain, that’s a bad idea, according to Vortherms. “We try to encourage people not to just rely on the dust trail at this time of year. When we get rain, that dust trail…it just doesn’t exist,” Vortherms said. He adds “defensive driving at slower speeds” on rural roads is critical at this time of year. Iowa DOT statistics show there were 28 crashes during 2011 at rural intersections due to obstructed views by trees or crops. The crashes resulted in one fatality and caused at least 34 injuries.

ADEL, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have arrested a central Iowa man on drug and traffic charges connected to a hit-and-run crash that killed a bicyclist. The Des Moines Register reports that 31-year-old Troy Wanninger of Adel was arrested Friday. He was charged with leaving the scene of accident resulting in death, failure to have a valid license, failure to have vehicle insurance and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Dallas County Sheriff Chad Leonard says an extensive investigation preceded the arrest. Wanninger was released from jail Friday pending trial. Online court records show he has been convicted of multiple traffic offenses over the years, including drunken driving and speeding. Authorities say 67-year-old Edward Giedraitis of Dallas Center was killed in May after he was struck by a car while riding his bike.

A Nebraska man died Saturday afternoon in Harrison County, when his motorcycle left the road, for reasons unknown. The Iowa State Patrol says 48 year old Michael R. Beck, of Decatur, NE, was driving a 2004 Harley Davidson left Interstate 29 northbound near the 94.5 mile marker, at around 2:10-p.m. The cycle ended up in the median. Beck was flown by Lifenet helicopter to Creighton University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Assisting at the accident scene was the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department and Mondamin Fire and Rescue.

The Montgomery County Communications Center received a cell 911 call reporting a two vehicle, property damage accident at approximately 4:19pm Friday.  The accident occurred in the 1600 block of 210th Street southwest of Red Oak.  A 1999 Ford F-150 pickup owned and operated by 56-year-old Calvin Merle Watt of Red Oak was westbound on 210th Street and was slowing to turn south into a residential driveway when a 2002 Dodge Dakota driven by 44-year-old Richard James Linfor of Red Oak struck the rear of Watt’s vehicle.  Linfor did not see Watt’s vehicle due to the gravel dust in the roadway.  Damage was estimated at $2,500 total for the vehicles and some property damage did occur.  No injuries were reported and no citations were issued.

The Atlantic Police Department reports an accident and unrelated arrest on Friday in Atlantic.  The accident occurred at the intersection of 7th and Walnut at approximately 6:32pm.  A vehicle driven by Sandra Ryan of Atlantic was traveling south on Walnut Street with a green light when a vehicle driven by Gabrielle Petersen of Griswold ran through the opposite red light and collided with Ryan’s vehicle.  No injuries were reported.  Damage to the vehicles was estimated at $2,500 each and Petersen was cited for failure to obey traffic device.

The APD also reported the arrest Friday of 24-year-old Kirk Kinser of Hastings, IA for OWI First degree and Driving Under Suspension.  He was booked and held at the Cass County Jail.

An accident Friday afternoon on Interstate 29 in Pottawattamie County resulted in a northeast Iowa man being sent to a hospital in Council Bluffs. The Iowa State Patrol says 21 year old Justin M. Ridder, of Aplington, was transported by Glenwood Rescue to Jenny Edmundson Hospital following the crash on I-29 northbound at the 45-mile marker.

Officials say Ridder was traveling in the right lane when he attempted to change lanes after seeing broken down motorists on the right shoulder. He was unable to do so however, because of a vehicle approaching fast in the left lane.

Ridder tried to return to the right lane but lost control of his vehicle. The 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer crossed the lane lane and hit a bridge guard rail. The accident happened at around 2:45-pm.
