Cerro Gordo County sheriff’s deputy resigns following investigation

MASON CITY, Iowa (KTTC) – A Cerro Gordo County sheriff’s deputy has resigned after allegedly posting a photo from an accident scene on social media. In a press release issued Friday, Cerro Gordo County Sheriff Kevin Pals said his office started an investigation Thursday into the alleged posting sent out to members of the public. According to Pals, the deputy being investigated resigned effective Friday.

This week, KTTC received an email from a family member of a Mason City man killed in a motorcycle crash on Sunday. The sheriff’s office confirmed the death of 22-year-old Allan Shafer. According to law enforcement, Shafer hit a deer while on his motorcycle early Sunday morning in Plymouth, which is about 15 minutes northeast of Mason City. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shafer’s uncle told KTTC a sheriff’s deputy took photos of his nephew’s body and posted them on his personal social media. The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office is not releasing any additional information about its investigation at this time. Pals did not mention the deputy’s name.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signs Perry teacher retention bonus bill into law

DES MOINES, Iowa — (KCCI) – Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has signed a bill aimed to keep teachers in the Perry School District. Under the new law, the school district would be able to use up to $700,000 to give bonuses. The funds could also offer teachers more if they decide to stay with the district. The bill is part of an effort to retain educators after the deadly shooting at the high school in January.

Red Oak man arrested for OWI Sunday morning

(Red Oak, Iowa) – Red Oak Police arrested a man an on OWI charge early this (Sunday) morning. Authorities say 35-year-old Travis Lee Treat, of Red Oak, was taken into custody at around 2:25-a.m. in the 900 block of Inman Drive, for Operating While Intoxicated/1st offense – a Serious Misdemeanor. Treat was transported to the Montgomery County Jail and held on a $1,000 bond.

CAROL EILEEN HEMMINGSEN, 86, of Marne, died Friday, April 05, 2024, at Heritage House in Atlantic. A Mass of Christian Burial for CAROL HEMMINGSEN will be held 2-p.m. Thursday, April 11, 2024, at the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic. Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic has the arrangements.

Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the mass at the church on Thursday.

Following Mass, interment will take place at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery in Atlantic. Following the committal service, a luncheon will be held in the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Parish Hall.

Memorials may be directed to the Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church in memory of Carol. They may be mailed to the Schmidt Family Funeral Home P.O. Box 523, Atlantic, IA, 50022.

Clark Named as Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year

CLEVELAND, Ohio — University of Iowa senior guard, Caitlin Clark, was named the winner of the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year Award it was announced during last night’s matchup. Clark also won the award last season and was a finalist in her sophomore and freshman year.
Clark was chosen as the winner of the award by a poll of national college basketball experts that recognizes the top point guard in women’s NCAA Division I college basketball based on their performances during the 2023-24 season.
The most dominant player in women’s college basketball recently led the Hawkeyes to their second straight Final Four leading the nation in assists (9.0 assists per game) and in scoring (31.7 points per game). She became the first player to finish No. 1 in both categories in back-to-back seasons. Clark owns a career 3,900+ points and she recently became the first Division-I player to record 1,000+ points in back-to-back seasons. She is also the only player in NCAA DI men’s or women’s basketball history to lead her conference in scoring and assists in four consecutive seasons.
In its 25th year, the award recognizes the top point guard in NCAA Division I women’s college basketball. To be considered for this prestigious award, candidates must exhibit the floor leadership, playmaking, and ball-handling skills of Class of 1996 Hall-of-Famer Nancy Lieberman.

NORMA FINCK, 90, of Greenfield, died Jan. 11, 2024. Celebration of Life Services for NORMA FINCK will be held 10:30-a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle. Lamb Funeral Home in Greenfield is in charge of the arrangements.

Burial is in the Fontanelle Cemetery.  A luncheon will be held at the church following the burial.

Memorials may be directed to the Norma Finck Memorial Fund to be established by the family at a later date.

Her sons – Jim (Marla) Finck, and Gary (Joanie) Finck, all of Greenfield.

Hawkeyes Walk Off Michigan to Open Series

IOWA CITY, Iowa – It was a walk off winner for the University of Iowa baseball team as Merrick Matthews propelled the Hawkeyes to a, 3-2, victory in the 10th inning over Michigan on Friday afternoon at Duane Banks Field.

 

The Hawkeyes and Wolverines saw the game go to extras in what was a low scoring pitchers’ duel. With the game tied, 2-2, Matthews delivered a bases loaded single to end the game. The Centerville, Iowa, native took just his seventh at bat as a Hawkeye and delivered the clutch base hit after falling behind 0-2 in the count.

 

“It was great to see,” said head coach Rick Heller. “Because when you have opportunities to win it like we did a couple of times and then didn’t come through, a lot of times you miss those chances and they don’t come back around. The guys just kept plugging away, they just kept fighting. Merrick Matthews comes through with the big clutch hit with two strikes and that was just awesome.”

 

Cade Obermueller made his first career Friday start for Iowa throwing 4 2/3 innings allowing two runs on two hits. The sophomore from Iowa City struck out six.

 

Jack Young entered and got the final out of the fifth. Aaron Savary threw 3 and 1/3 innings of relief striking out five Wolverines.

 

Ben DeTaeye entered in the ninth inning with a runner at third with one out and got a flyout and a groundout. The redshirt senior threw 1 2/3 innings to earn the win.

 

“Cade Obermueller pitched great for three innings,” said Heller. “As good as he’s pitched this year. And then he kind of lost it and gave him some free bases and we ended up giving them a couple runs. Then the bullpen came in and did an outstanding job today. Aaron Savary was tremendous, and then same with Ben DeTaeye. They were both outstanding today. We only had one free base once we went to the bullpen.”

 

Reese Moore and Will Mulflur each tallied two hits for the Hawkeyes. Mulflur had an RBI for the Hawkeyes with a single up the middle in the second inning and Kyle Huckstorf added an RBI on a groundout in the fifth.

 

“We just found a way to get it done,” said Heller. “Super happy with the effort.”

 

Iowa improved to 16-11 on the season and 5-2 in Big Ten play.

 

The Hawkeyes and Wolverines will conclude the three-game series with a doubleheader beginning tomorrow at 1 p.m. (CT).

  • The Hawkeyes have 18 walk off wins at Duane Banks Field since 2015.
  • The last walk off win for the Hawkeyes was on February 17, 2023, against Indiana State when Kyle Huckstorf hit a grand slam in the 11th inning.
  • The last walk off for the Hawkeyes at Duane Banks Field was April 21, 2021, when Brett McCleary hit a three-run home run against Northwestern.

Let’s Do It Again; Sunday Watch Party at CHA

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa Athletics Department will be hosting a FREE women’s basketball watch party Sunday afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena for the second-ranked Hawkeyes’ NCAA Championship game against top-ranked South Carolina.

Doors at the North, South and West entrances to Carver-Hawkeye Arena will open at 1 p.m. (CT) — 60 minutes prior to the 2 p.m. scheduled tipoff from Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland.

Fans attending the watch party will be asked to view the game on the jumbotron from the east side of the arena in Sections NN, N, M, L, MM, LL, KK.

Parking will be free in all Carver-Hawkeye Arena surrounding lots.  There will not be reserved parking.

During the watch party, there will be in-game entertainment and the Hawkeye Fan Shop and concessions (including beer and wine) will be available.

The Hawkeyes, who have won a school record 34 games this season, are playing in their second straight NCAA Championship Game.
