Sheriff’s officials in Montgomery County say a Red Oak woman was arrested Saturday afternoon after creating a disturbance at a local store. 52-year old Rlena Dee Crouse was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on $300 bond following her arrest for Public Intoxication.

Authorities say Crouse was walking on 4th Street southbound from the 1500 block, and allegedly yelling and screaming. Officers responding to the area at around 2:30-p.m. were notified the woman had entered the Dollar General Store in Red Oak, and when she walked out, “was still being loud,” according to the Sheriff’s report. The report also stated Crouse was “Very intoxicated.”

She was brought to the Montgomery County Jail.

ALLAMAKEE COUNTY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa officials evacuated more than 80 campers after heavy rains caused flooding at the Yellow River State Forest in the northeast corner of the state. The state Department of Natural Resources said the campers had to be evacuated yesterday after more than 3 inches of rain fell overnight. The campers were brought to a community building in Harpers Ferry about 10 miles away.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa City man is facing several charges after allegedly holding a child and elderly woman hostage during a13-hour standoff with police. Iowa City police said 52-year-old Troy Perkins was arrested yesterday morning after a SWAT team entered the home. Police say the standoff began around 7 p.m. Friday when Perkins’ girlfriend reported that he had threatened her with a gun and punched her before she fled the house.

CORWITH, Iowa (AP) — A gentlemen’s club that drew strong opposition after it opened this March in the tiny northern Iowa town of Corwith is closing. The Mason City Globe Gazette reports this weekend will be the last for The Loft club in the town of roughly 300. But club owner Dale Peterson says he may try to relocate to another Iowa town, possibly Fort Dodge.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Republican businessman and reality TV host Donald Trump will speak at a conservative event in Iowa this August. Organizers of the Family Leader’s leadership summit say Trump accepted the invitation to speak August 10th in Ames.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — An online classified ad offering an oak coffin neglected to mention the full skeleton inside that Iowa authorities seized to try and identify. The Council Bluffs Daily Nonpareil reports the coffin belonged to the now defunct Council Bluffs chapter of the International Order of Odd Fellows.

Dave Burgstrum says he placed the ad to sell the coffin for $12,000 because he’s trying to raise money to pay the property taxes on the fraternal organizations hall. Burgstrum says the coffin that was made in the 1900s was used in the group’s rituals to represent death, and the bones had been inside for years.

Council Bluffs Police detective Michael Roberts says human remains can’t be sold with proper identification. So the skeleton was sent to the Iowa State Medical Examiner.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reported the arrest on Friday of two individuals in Red Oak on theft charges.  43-year-old Shelby Joann Olivares and 49-year-old Kevin Leon Simmons were arrested at their residence in the 100 block of East Maple Street in Red Oak on a charge of theft in the 5th degree.  They reportedly stole property from another individual valued at $179 on Thursday, June 20th.  Olivares and Simmons were taken to the Montgomery County Law Center and held on $300 cash bond.

The Iowa State Patrol says four people from Des Moines were injured after the vehicle they were in crashed and rolled over Friday night in Harrison County. Officials say a 2006 Toyota corolla driven by 24-year old Chappo Kabadom, of Des Moines, was traveling north on Interstate 29 about two-miles south of the Missouri Valley exit, when the car went out of control and hit a bridge before sliding sideways off the north shoulder of the road and rolling over. One person was ejected during the crash, which happened at around 11:55-p.m..

Kabadom, along with his passengers : 16-year old Banana J. Masso, 24-year old Assanai Worare, and 22-year old Andiriya Adum, all of Des Moines, were transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, with the 16-year old being flown to the facility by helicopter. Their injuries were described as non-life threatening. The accident remains under investigation, but was being complicated by a language barrier.

A large crowd participated in the 2013 Cass County Relay for Life Friday night (6/21) at the Atlantic High School Track.  Individuals, teams, and corporate sponsors all helped make the fundraising effort the best year yet in raising funds to battle Cancer with the American Cancer Society.  The fundraising total as of the end of the event Friday was at $78,880.59 with some donations still coming in.

The night began with a Survivor dinner in the Atlantic High School Commons catered by Hy-Vee.  Survivors then kicked off the activities at the track by completing the first lap and being recognized for their fight against Cancer.

The night also contained a wide variety of entertainment, kids activities, an education tent, many raffles, some great food, special laps and the luminary ceremony in the evening. 

A couple of other special efforts went on throughout the day Friday as well with a tractor ride that began from the Cass County Fairgrounds and a motorcycle ride that started at the Atlantic City Park.  Both rides were very well attended and raised more funds for Relay.  The tractor riders finished their day at the Atlantic Hy-Vee while the motorcycle ride made their final stop at the Relay for Life event to turn in their funds.

Another special moment toward the end of the event was a special memorial donation presentation from the McCunn family in honor of Don McCunn.  Thier large donation helped push the fundraising total over the top of last year’s efforts.

The Cass County Relay for Life committee would like to thank everyone in Cass County for supporting the cause and making the event a great success.

The State Auditor’s Office today (Friday) released a report on a special investigation of the Creston Water Works. The investigation covers the period from July 1st, 2005 through November 16th, 2012, and was conducted as a result of concerns regarding certain purchases and other financial transactions authorized by the General Manager, Steve Green. 

The audit identified more than $89,835 worth of improper and unsupported disbursements, which includes slightly more than $49,720 paid to Green, and additional retirement contributions for inspections of 2 projects for which a separate inspector had been hired. It also includes just over $30,300 worth of unauthorized vacation payouts and FICA contributions, and a little more than $2,315 worth of  assets purchased by the Water Works but in Green’s possession. The improper disbursements identified also include almost $1,961 of petty cash reimbursements to Green, for prescription medications and about $1,263 to Green for meals. 

The more than $3,050 worth of unsupported disbursements identified includes petty cash reimbursements to Green and other Water Works employees for meals, travel and conference expenses for which documentation was not sufficient to determine the propriety of the reimbursement.

The Water Works does not allow employees to carry over or payout their vacation balance without Board approval. However, in addition to paying out his vacation balance, Green carried his balance over from year to year. The investigation says as a result, Green’s vacation balance was overstated by 476 hours, which is valued at more than $22,520. 

The report includes recommendations to strengthen the Water Works’ controls and procedures over inventory, payroll and other disbursements, including petty cash. 

Copies of the report have been filed with the Union County Attorney’s Office, the Attorney General’s Office, the Union County Sheriff’s Office and the Division of Criminal Investigation. A copy of the report is available for review in the Office of Auditor of State and on the Auditor of State’s website  http://auditor.iowa.gov/specials/1223-0848-BE00.pdf

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Microsoft is the latest business planning to build a massive data center in Iowa as the state continues to attract some of the biggest technology companies looking for a place to expand their computer processing and storage abilities.  Microsoft is proposing to spend more than $670 million on another West Des Moines data center. The company is seeking $20 million in tax credits to create about 30 jobs. The Iowa Economic Development Authority on Friday was considering approval of the incentives.
 
Already Microsoft, Facebook, and Google have chosen Iowa for data centers. Microsoft’s total investment is expected to exceed $1 billion in Iowa with the new project. Industry consultants say Iowa offers plentiful, inexpensive electricity and policies that alleviate millions of dollars in property and sales taxes.
