DELORIS CARNS-ROBERTSON, 86, of Fontanelle, died Wednesday, January 3rd, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.  Celebration of Life services for DELORIS CARNS-ROBERTSON will be held 10:30-a.m. April 28th, at the United Methodist Church in Greenfield. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield has the arrangements.

A luncheon will be held at the Greenfield United Methodist Church following committal services in the Fontanelle Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield April 27th, from 3-until 8-p.m., with the family greeting friends from 6-until 8-p.m. ; Online condolences may be left at www.steenfunerals.com.

Memorials may be directed to the Adair County Historical Society in Greenfield.

Her brothers – Dick Raper, of Foulton, MO; John (Phyllis) Raper, of Hungry Horst, MT; Jerry (Edie) Raper, of Greenfield, and LeRoy Nelson, of Fontanelle.

Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a step-granddaughter, her in-laws, other relatives and friends.

NORMAN M. MERK, 89, of Audubon, died Monday, Jan. 1st, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services for NORMAN MERK will be held 2-p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6th, at the 1st Baptist Church in Brayton. Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon has the arrangements.

A family visitation will be held at the 1st Baptist Church in Brayton, from 12:30-p.m. until the time of service, Saturday.

Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon, at 4-p.m., Saturday.

Powerball jumps to $550M after no winning tickets sold

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — No winning tickets were sold for the $460 million Powerball drawing. The winning numbers selected Wednesday night were 2, 18, 37, 39 and 42, and the Powerball number was 12. The jackpot jumps to an estimated $550 million for Saturday’s drawing. That would make it the nation’s 8th largest lottery prize ever.

Powerball is played in 44 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The odds of winning are one in 292.2 million. The $550 million prize refers to the annuity option, paid over 29 years. The cash prize would be almost $348 million.

Lottery players also can vie for another giant prize, as the Mega Millions game’s grand prize will be $418 million in Friday’s drawing.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa City police suspect dangerously cold weather played a part in the death of a man whose body was found Tuesday. Officers were sent to area around 2 p.m. Tuesday after 24-year-old Paul Biagas was found dead in the snow near the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center. Police Lt. Zach Diersen says investigators believe Biagas may have been walking home on New Year’s Eve to his apartment near downtown Iowa City.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Salvation Army in Omaha has announced it will open several locations in the city and nearby Council Bluffs, Iowa, for people to escape the bitter cold that has gripped much of the nation. The group says its Kroc Center in southeastern Omaha, North Corps Community Center in northeast Omaha, Citadel Corps in midtown Omaha and Council Bluffs location across the Missouri River will serve as warming centers through Friday.

FARLEY, Iowa (AP) — Frigid temperatures are creating challenges for Iowa farmers who say animals can endure cold winter conditions but need extra attention to stay healthy and productive. Iowa entered 2018 with subzero temperatures. One dairy farmer tells the Telegraph Herald that his livestock needs to be partially protected from the frigid conditions. He says the cold weather can make cows uncomfortable and cut into productivity.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Reed Timmer hit six 3-pointers and finished with 28 points and Nick McGlynn had his fourth double-double of the season to help Drake beat Illinois State 87-62 for the Bulldogs’ fourth win in a row. McGlynn finished with 11 points, a career-high 13 rebounds and two blocks.

WACO, Texas (AP) — Natalie Chou had 17 points, Kalani Brown had another double-double and the No. 6 Baylor women overwhelmed Iowa State 89-49. Six players scored in double figures for the 13-1 Lady Bears. Baylor started the game with a 10-0 run and went on to its 10th straight win. Chou had five of Baylor’s 12 3-pointers.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt led the league in rushing as a rookie this season. Now, he is preparing for one of the league’s best run defenses in Tennessee. The teams meet Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have placed cornerback Phillip Gaines on injured reserve, possibly ending his time in Kansas City. Gaines dislocated his elbow last weekend. They signed defensive tackle Stefan Charles ahead of their playoff game against Tennessee. Charles provides some depth with injuries along the defensive front.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Peyton Williams scored 22 points with 10 rebounds, Kaylee Page scored seven of her 12 points in the fourth quarter and Kansas State handed No. 12 West Virginia its second straight loss 60-52. The Wildcats (9-5, 1-2 Big 12 Conference), who had lost three straight, the last two to ranked league opponents, scored the last four points of the third quarter to pull within 44-42.

Public meeting in Montgomery County 1/17. re: County Radio & Comm system issues

The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors will host a public meeting on Wednesday, January 17th. The meeting is with regard to the current county radio and communication system and the challenges the County is facing. The session takes place in the courtroom at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Red Oak, beginning at 6:30-p.m. The courtroom is located on the second floor of the courthouse.

During the public meeting, there will be a presentation about the Montgomery County Local Enhancements to [the] Iowa State Interoperable Communications System P25 Platform Proposal. There will also be comments from Montgomery County Joint Communications, Montgomery County Emergency Management, Montgomery County Emergency Personnel and Agencies and the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Financial options will also be discussed.

Time will be allowed for public comments and questions. Residents are encouraged to attend this meeting. The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors will be in quorum; however, there will be no actions made. Omaha Salvation Army to open warming centers this week

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Salvation Army in Omaha has announced it will open several locations in the city and nearby Council Bluffs, for people to escape the bitter cold that has gripped much of the nation.

The group says its Kroc Center in southeastern Omaha, North Corps Community Center in northeast Omaha, Citadel Corps in midtown Omaha and Council Bluffs location across the Missouri River will serve as warming centers through Friday. The Kroc Center will be open from 5 a.m. through 9 p.m. The other two Omaha locations open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Council Bluffs center opens from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Salvation Army opens warming centers when the wind chill dips below freezing or air temperature drops below 15 degrees (-12.22 Celsius).
