A pursuit that began Friday night in Fremont County ended 27 minutes later, but not before an officer was dragged by the vehicle and an Iowa State Patrol car was rammed. 18-year old Dominque James Schlup, of Hastings, was taken into custody in Mills County and charged with Assault on an officer, Eluding, Possession of Stolen Property, Criminal Mischief in the 2nd degree, OWI/2nd offense, Driving While Revoked, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was being held in the Mills County Jail on $15,000 bond.
The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office reports the pursuit began after authorities received a report of a vehicle stolen from the vicinity of 110th Street and Plum Creek Road. During the investigation, the vehicle was observed by deputies who tried to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle sped off and wound its way onto several Fremont and Mills County roads, as well as through Malvern and Tabor, at speeds topping 110-miles per hour.
The vehicle was finally stopped on Lambert Avenue, just east of Malvern. During the stop, Schlup dragged officers with the vehicle before it rammed an Iowa State Patrol car. Following the pursuit, a search warrant was executed at 1129 225th Avenue, in Tabor. Several items were removed from the home. Charges are currently pending in Fremont County.
The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Tabor Police Department, Mills County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol and the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation.
On Saturday, Sept. 21st, Members of Chapter 1373 of the Royal Neighbors of America, based in Atlantic, surprised Natalie Groves, of Exira, with a $500 check from the organization’s “Nation of Neighbors Program,” to her Groves with her ministry at the Bethany Farm Christian Center in Brayton. The funds will help keep the cost of activities at the retreat for women and couples reasonable, and to purchase bunk beds for children.
Royal Neighbors has given nearly $1.5-million to more than 1,000 families and individuals in reaching their goals and rebuilding their lives through its Nation of Neighbors Program, which was launched in 2007. Officials say the program demonstrates a vision of protecting women financially and empowering them to improve their lives, families and communities, based on a philosophy founded in 1895.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of 25-year-old Richard Dean Pierce of Red Oak for Driving While Suspended (13th Offense) at 3:16pm Friday (9/20). Pierce was arrested at N 8th Street and East Chautauqua in Red Oak. He was transported to the Montgomery County Jail and held on $566.25 bond.
The Red Oak Police Department reports two arrests for Public Intoxication on Friday. At approximately 9:57pm officers arrested 24-year-old Megan Renea Guffey of Red Oak and 29-year-old Robert James Welch of Council Bluffs for Public Intoxication at Broadway and 1st Avenue in Red Oak. Both defendants were taken to the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center. No bond was set for Welch and Guffey was being held on $300 cash bond.
The Red Oak Police also report the arrest Friday of 31-year-old Keith Andre Smith of Omaha for Breach of Peace. Smith was arrested at approximately 7:45pm in the 1800 block of East Summit Street in Red Oak. Smith was transported to the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center and held on $300 cash bond.
A couple of area school board meetings are set to take place Monday evening. In Exira, an Exira-EHK Regular Joint Board and Organizational Meeting will begin at 7-p.m. in the Media Center at the High School. Board members will answer any questions about the New Board, and the EHK Board will act on approving a bid from Feld’s Security for an entrance door. Both board will also act on Allowable Growth Funding for Special Education.
The Joint Board meeting will then adjourn, followed by the convening of an Organizational meeting for the new Exira-Elk Horn Kimballton Community School District. Their agenda includes the election of a new, seven member Board, followed by approval of Tami Jacobsen as Board Secretary and Marie Larson as Business Manager.
And, the Atlantic Community School District’s Board of Education will hold an Organizational Meeting and Work Session at 7:30-p.m. Monday, in the High School Media Center. The session will begin with business for the retiring board, approval the canvass of elections, Certified Annual Report and Special Education Supplement. Following adjournment, the New Board meeting and work session will begin.
It will include the administration of oath for newly re-elected Board Members Kristy Pellett and Josh McLaren, the election of a Board President and Vice President, and other administrative matters. The Board will also discuss the Building Budget and Capital Projects, prior to adjourning.
The Red Oak Police Department reports the arrest of 30-year-old Matthew Lee Gusman of Red Oak on a 3rd Degree Burglary charge Friday night. Officers responded to a call of a burglary in progress at approximately 9:50pm Friday at 205 East Corning Street in Red Oak. Gusman was found at the property when Red Oak Police and Montgomery County Sheriff’s officials arrived on the scene. Gusman was arrested and charged with 3rd Degree Burglary, which is a class D felony and was being held on $5,000 cash bond.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says DNR Conservation Officer Dan Pauley reported a fish kill in a creek near Westside in Crawford County to the DNR Environmental Services Field Office in Atlantic on Thursday, Sept. 19th.
Holly Vandemark responded Thursday afternoon and observed dead chubs and minnows and a few larger fish in the East Boyer River for a mile downstream, possibly originating between the FAC Farmers Co-op Elevator and the city wastewater lagoon. The fish appeared to have been dead for some time.
Water samples from the kill area and downstream revealed only the slightest elevation in ammonia, nitrate and dissolved oxygen. Live fish and aquatic wildlife were observed in the sampling areas. There may be several contributing factors to the fish kill and the DNR will continue to investigate.

The stage is set for the November 5th City Elections in Cass County. The deadline to file nomination papers was Thursday. As reported earlier this (Friday) morning, in Atlantic, two current members of the City Council won’t seek re-election this fall. Shawn Shouse, in Ward 5, and At Large Councilman Steve Livengood, did not file their nomination papers for re-election.
Two persons have filed nomination papers for those respective seats on the Council, however. Lori Stuart has filed to run for the 5th Ward seat, and Bob Cord has filed for the At Large position. As previously mentioned, Mayor Dave Jones and 2nd Ward Councilperson Kathy Somers, have filed their papers for re-election on November 5th. Charlene Beane is the lone candidate running for the Parks and Recreation Board, leaving a second seat open to a write-in candidate.
In Anita, there are three seat open on the City Council. The candidates include Mark Harris and Incumbent Dennis L. Zimmerman. In Cumberland, Nancy Virginia Coughlin is running unopposed for Mayor. And, running for the three open seats on the City Council, is incumbent Gary Cooper and Douglas C. Neiner, who was appointed. In Lewis, incumbents Matt Klein and Marilyn Mundorf are running for re-election to fill the two seats on the Council. In Massena, Linda Reineke (who was appointed as Mayor), is running unopposed. Four people are running for 2 seats on the Council in Massena, including Jackson R. Bissell, Kevin McCunn, incumbent Robert McKnight, and Doug Venteicher.
In Griswold, where there are two seats open on the City Council, Incumbent Jared Wyman has filed for re-election, along with Barry Moore. In Marne, Mayor Randy Baxter will be unopposed in his bid for re-election, but there is a six-way race for five seats on the City Council. Four incumbents: Alan Cranston, Randy Henningsen, Lanny Kite and Angela Redler, have filed for re-election. Two others are challenging the incumbents, including Lori Holste and Randy L. Fischer.
And in Wiota, Mayor J. Ford Lillard is unopposed for his re-election bid, while four people are running for two seats on the City Council. They include incumbents Kathryn Havens and Deanna Spry, along with Jeff Lillard and Lamar K. Spies.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest on Thursday of 23-year old Justin Dale Hardisty, of Cumberland. Hardisty was taken into custody on numerous charges, including: Eluding; Driving While Barred; Public Intoxication; Interference with Official Acts; Criminal Trespass; Reckless Driving, and three counts of Driving Under Suspension. Hardisty was being held in the Cass County Jail on $5,800 bond.
Also arrested Thursday, was 30-year old Bryan Matthew Kirby, of Atlantic. He was taken into custody on a charge of 5th Degree Theft. Kirby entered a plea of guilty and was later released from custody. On Tuesday, Cass County deputies arrested 29-year old Nickalas Dean Orstad, of Griswold, on a charge of Failure to Appear. Orstad was taken to the Cass County Jail and held on $5,000 bond.
And, on Friday (Sept. 20th), the 30-year old Daniel Floyd Edwards, of Cumberland, was arrested in Cass County on a Department of Corrections warrant for Parole Violation. Edwards was taken to the Cass County Jail where he is being held without bond.
