Authorities ID woman stabbed to death in Sioux City

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have released the name of a woman stabbed to death outside her home on the west side of Sioux City. She’s been identified as 24-year-old Kenia Alvarez-Flores. Police say she died at a hospital after being stabbed several times before 8 a.m. Sunday. Authorities have arrested and charged 20-year-old Melissa Camargo-Flores, of Dakota City, Nebraska. Her attorney didn’t immediately return a call Tuesday from The Associated Press.

Court documents say Camargo-Flores admitted stabbing Alvarez-Flores and told investigators she’d been involved in a relationship with the victim’s boyfriend. Authorities say the two women were not related.

Former teacher gets probation on harassment charge

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A former Johnston teacher accused of groping and making sexual comments to an anatomy class student has been given two years of probation. Court records say 34-year-old Dustin Mead entered an Alford plea to a harassment charge in a plea deal. He originally pleaded not guilty to sexual abuse and sexual abuse by a school employee. The Alford plea means Mead acknowledges there’s enough evidence for a jury to reach a guilty verdict, but he says he didn’t commit the acts alleged.

Mead resigned from his teaching job at Johnston schools in April 2017 after a female student alleged he gave her grades she didn’t earn, made sexual comments and groped her during the 2015-2016 school year.
Mead’s lawyer, Guy Cook, told The Des Moines Register that Mead “maintains his innocence because he is innocent.”

ISU expert says there’s hope tariffs will go away before implementation

While the initial reaction to the grain and livestock markets was negative after U-S tariffs were announced, Iowa State University Extension Grain Marketing Specialist says some of those markets have shown signs of recovery. Chad Hart says there is some hope the U-S and China may begin negotiations to minimize the impact of the trade war. Hart says some if not all of the tariffs might not happen as they could be negoitiated away. He says while the tariffs were announced, they don’t go into place for two months.

Hart says the initial drop in soybean prices came back up some and there is hope the time lag before the tariffs happen gives hope the damage can keep from being too bad. He says there is time for negoitiators to get rid of the tariffs before they even start, and that led to some rebound in the markets after the initial drop. Hart says several Iowa farm and commodity organizations have had trade missions to China in order to build a relationship. He says it may be difficult for those farm organizations to maintain the trusting relationship needed with the Chinese. He says it often takes years to build up a trade relationship, but it can be swept away rather quickly.

Griswold man arrested in Montgomery County Mon. night

Sheriff’s deputies in Montgomery County, Monday night, arrested a Cass County man on a drug charge. 19-year old Markus Joshua Bothwell, of Griswold, was arrested at the intersection of Elm and 2nd Streets, in Elliott, at around 8:35-p.m. Bothwell was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, and brought to the Montgomery County Jail, where his bond was set at $1,000.

ISU cancels spring game with bad weather expected

The prospect of a return to winter weather conditions this weekend has forced the cancellation of Iowa State’s spring football game. The school announced late Monday afternoon that Athletic Director Jamie Pollard and Head Coach Matt Campbell mutually decided to cancel the spring game set for Saturday in Ames due to the forecast for poor weather conditions.

The game will not be rescheduled and other activities scheduled in conjunction with the game are also canceled. The National Weather Service says temperatures could reach into the 70’s by Wednesday — but they are expected to plummet again by Saturday back into the 30’s and 40’s with the possibility of more snow.

A statement from Pollard says the team will hold its final spring practice Saturday behind closed doors.

Veteran corners lead Iowa State defense

Two senior corners give the Iowa State defense a chance to make even more progress next season. Brian Peavy returns for his senior season after considering a jump to the NFL. He was a first team All Big-12 selection last season. He and fellow senior DeAndre Payne will be the leaders of the secondary. Peavy says the goal is to become the best secondary in the Big 12.

ISU was scheduled to hold its Spring game this Saturday, but it was cancelled due to the anticipated return of Winter weather.

Hawkeyes look to boost punting and punt returns

The Iowa Hawkeyes are looking to post their punt game and punt return game in spring drills. The Hawkeyes ranked 13th in net punting last season and special teams coordinator LeVar Woods says there is competition for the punting job.

Colten Rastetter handled the majority of the punting chores last season and averaged just under 38 yards as a sophomore. Ryan Gersonde punted 13 times for an average of just over 42 yards as a freshman and Woods says he is trying to find the right style of. Woods says the two punters have contrasting styles.

Iowa is looking to find a spark in the punt return game. The Hawkeyes finished 10th in returns last year and averaged just over six yards per return. Woods says sophomore receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette has shined this spring in the return game. He caught 18 passes as a freshman. Iowa’s spring drills run through April 20th.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo says he regrets his choice of words that set off St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina and triggered a benches-clearing incident. Lovullo came out of the dugout to argue with plate umpire Tim Timmons in St. Louis on Sunday, blaming the umpire for a called third strike he claimed was influenced by the All-Star catcher’s pitch framing. Lovullo used a profanity that set off Molina, and the manager was ejected.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — In his St. Louis debut, Greg Holland walked four batters in the 10th inning and forced home the go-ahead run that gave the Milwaukee Brewers a 5-4 win over the Cardinals. The 32-year-old Holland, who tied for the NL lead with 41 saves for Colorado last season, was signed as a free agent on opening day. He walked two batters to begin the 10th. After a sacrifice bunt, an intentional walk loaded the bases. The three-time All-Star closer then walked Orlando Arcia and was pulled.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jakob Junis carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning as the Kansas City Royals routed the Seattle Mariners 10-0. The Royals scored more runs off Marco Gonzales and the Seattle bullpen than they had in their past six games combined. Mike Moustakas homered and drove in a pair of runs to lead the offense.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State’s five-game improvement from 2016 to 2017 can be largely credited to a defense that was stingier by 10 points a game. The Cyclones are hoping to get even better this upcoming season _ and there are plenty of reasons to believe they can.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans have added a veteran defensive lineman a day before kicking off their offseason program under new coach Mike Vrabel. The Titans agreed to terms on a deal with Bennie Logan. The 6-foot-2, 315-pound Logan has started 63 of his 74 games in the NFL with Philadelphia and Kansas City. He has 218 tackles, seven sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumbles recovered in his career.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An Ottumwa man in prison for robbery and burglary who once threatened to kill former President Barack Obama and a judge has now been indicted again on charges of mailing a death threat to a federal judge. Matthew James Howard, who is serving 13 years in prison, received an additional three years in September 2013 for writing letters threatening to kill Obama and a judge earlier that year.

PLEASANT HILL, Iowa (AP) — Teachers across the country are learning to pack wounds and apply tourniquets through a program started after the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in 2012. The aim of Stop the Bleed is to train educators in stopping blood loss so victims of school shootings can survive until help arrives. In five years, the program has trained some 125,000 people. Teachers say they can’t stop mass shootings, but they can be prepared to help their students if violence hits their school.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Lawmakers signed off on a bill Monday that will prevent Iowa students from being treated unfairly by school officials if their parents owe lunch money. Under the bill, Iowa schools would be prohibited from so-called “lunch shaming” tactics, including publicly identifying students whose parents owe money or throwing away meals that were already served. Schools would be allowed to accept private donations to pay off individual students’ debts. The bill goes to Gov. Kim Reynolds.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A clerk for an Iowa Republican senator has been fired after a “sexual harassment” complaint was lodged against him. Secretary of the Senate Charlie Smithson confirmed Monday that Jake Dagel was terminated April 3 as Sen. Waylon Brown’s clerk after a “credible complaint of sexual harassment” was made against Dagel on the same day. Smithson says Dagel acknowledged “the conduct in question.” Smithson didn’t provide additional information, only noting the behavior was against chamber policy.
