Firefighters in Atlantic responded to two separate house fires overnight Sunday into early this (Monday) morning.

The latest, a fire at 107 W. 4th Street, was reported today (Monday), at 2:23-a.m.  Atlantic Fire Chief Mark McNees told KJAN News there was heavy black smoke visible upon arrival and flames coming out the back of the single-story home. Search and Rescue entered the house and discovered no-one was home.

McNees said later the home was vacant because the tenant had moved out this past week.

McNees said the cause of the fire remained undetermined early this morning. He said the scene of the fire was in the back porch area, near the kitchen. An electrical box was found in that general vicinity, but it was unclear if that’s where the fire started.

The second fire at 501 Peach Street in the Sycamore Village area, occurred at around 8:35-p.m. Sunday, and remains under investigation.

Police in Red Oak arrested one person Sunday evening on a charge of Public Intoxication. 60-year old James Donald Uhlmann, Sr., of Red Oak, was arrested at around 7:15-p.m. in the 2400 block of North 8th Street, and held in the Montgomery County Jail on $300 bond.

No injuries were reported following a fire in a mobile home Sunday night, in Atlantic. The call about the fire at 501 Peach Street came in at around 8:36-p.m.

Atlantic Fire Chief Mark McNees said when they arrived on the scene, some clothing was on fire on the ground outside the home. Inside the home, there were visible flames on the west end and heavy black smoke coming out of both sides. Firefighters were able to knock the flames down quickly.

The cause of the fire was deemed suspicious, according to McNees, because a domestic situation had occurred earlier, and it wouldn’t have taken much to cause any fire to spread quickly. That’s because there was “Plenty of fuel” in terms of clothing in the bedroom, where it’s believed the fire started.

The couple who shared the home were being interviewed by police Sunday evening.

Funeral services are set for a Griswold teen who died during a rollover accident this past weekend, southeast of Griswold. Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold reports a Rosary and visitation for 18-year old Austin Oldenkamp will begin 4-pm Wednesday at the Griswold Community Building, and a Mass of Christian Burial service will be held Friday, in Sioux City (You can view the funeral announcement on kjan.com or listen for our reports weekday mornings).

Police in Red Oak report the arrest of a Cass County woman Saturday evening. Officials say Robin Jennings, of Atlantic, was arrested for felony OWI 3^rd offense following a traffic stop. Her bond was set at $5,000.

The Daily NonPareil report two Council Bluffs Boy Scouts who were burned in an explosion Thursday evening were released Saturday from St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center in Lincoln. Jared Holcomb, a senior at Abraham Lincoln High School, and Scott Brown, a junior at Abraham Lincoln — were among a group of scouts who were working a project involving gun powder for a spring ceremony.

The explosion occurred at a home at 205 Kingsridge Drive. Fire officials said four other people suffered minor injuries.

One person was seriously injured during a rollover accident Saturday evening, on the southern outskirts of Council Bluffs. The Iowa State Patrol says 46-year old Cynthia Devault, of Council Bluffs, who was not wearing a seat belt, was flown by LifeNet helicopter to Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha following the crash on Interstate 29 southbound near Lake Manawa, at around 6:10-p.m., Saturday.

Officials say for reasons unknown, Devault’s 2007 Chevy Impala swerved to the right across both lanes of traffic and entered the southbound ditch before rolling up and over a dirt berm and coming to rest on its top.

The accident happened at around the 46.25-mile marker.
