An Adams County man was arrested early this (Saturday) morning after authorities investigated a pickup truck stuck in a corn field north of the Prescott School. Sheriff’s officials say 22-year old Ansley Matthew Page, of Corning, was charged with Public Intoxication. Page was being held in the Adams County Jail on $300 bond.

Authorities say they received a call at around 3:30-a.m. about a white pickup truck stuck in a field. An area resident saw Page leave the truck and walk through the field, get in a car and leave. He later reported to officials that his truck was taken from the bar in Prescott.

June 21st, 2014 by Ric Hanson

Strong storms that moved from Nebraska into western and southwest Iowa Friday night resulted in street flooding in Omaha, reports of dime-to quarter-sized hail, potentially damaging winds, and the postponement of a College World Series game. A Flash Flood Warning that was issued just after midnight for northwestern Mills and south central Pottawattamie County, was allowed to expire at 6:30-a.m. Officials say the heavy rain which prompted the warning has ended, and flooding in those areas is no longer expected to pose a threat.

Here in Atlantic, we received just over one-inch of rain at the KJAN studios on the north side of town. A little further into town, 1.2-inches was reported. The storms moved into Harrison and Shelby Counties a little at around 6-p.m., Friday, dumping quarter-sized hail and winds of up to 45 miles per hour near Little Sioux. Less than an hour later, those winds had increased to over 55-miles per hour.

At around 8-p.m., dime-sized hail was reported near Mondamin, in Harrison County. A few minutes later, dime-to-quarter size hail was reported by a spotter in Missouri Valley. At about that same time, spotters at the Persia Fire station recorded a 60-mile per hour gust of wind. And, at around 8:15-p.m., the Harlan Airport’s automated weather observation system recorded a wind gust of up to 58-miles per hour.

There were no immediate reports of damage associated with the wind and hail events. Today’s forecast calls for the possibility of additional thunderstorm activity later this afternoon and tonight. The storms will be capable of producing heavy rainfall, damaging winds and large hail. Additional periods of thunderstorms are possible Sunday through next Friday, severe weather and heavy rain are possible as well. Information with regard to the timing and location of these storms will unfold as the week progresses.

Crawford County race decided by just 1 vote

News

June 21st, 2014 by Ric Hanson

The final results of the June 3rd Primary in the Crawford County Board of Supervisors race came down to just one vote. The Omaha World-Herald reports a recount has verified Steve Ulmer won the race. Ulmer, of Arion, appeared to have won on election night with a one-vote lead over incumbent Jerry Butler, of Kiron, but two provisional ballots resulted in a tie at 541-votes apiece.

The tie was broken last week by a drawing of lots, as required by state law. Ulmer won, but Butler requested a recount, which determined Butler received one vote fewer than originally recorded, resulting in a 541-540 win for Ulmer.

Ulmer, Kyle Schultz, of Charter Oak, and incumbent Eric Skoog, of Denison, will be on the ballot in November’s General Election, for the three Board of Supervisors seats.

(Update) 2 NE residents arrested after chase and crash

News

June 21st, 2014 by Ric Hanson

In an update to our story Friday morning, authorities say two people from Nebraska were arrested early Friday morning following the pursuit of a stolen vehicle that later crashed. The Omaha World-Herald reports police arrested 44-year old Mark T. Fuller,  of Bellevue and 19-year old Cara Pokorny, of Omaha, on suspicion of second-degree theft, disobedience to a peace officer, interference with official acts and two counts of eluding, according to police records. Fuller was also arrested on suspicion of not having a driver’s license.

The pair were taken into custody at around 1:20 a.m. Friday, after a chase in Sarpy County, NE that began when an officers’ attempt to pull over a 1994 Buick that was reportedly stolen. The chase ended up in Council Bluffs, where the vehicle crashed in the 2000 block of Veterans Memorial Highway.

Both suspects remain at the Pottawattamie County Jail on $10,000 bail.

IDPH issuing safe food handling reminder

News

June 21st, 2014 by Ric Hanson

Now that farmer’s markets and roadside stands are open for business, state health officials have some reminders about proper food handling to avoid illness. Iowa Department of Public Health Medical Director Patricia Quinlisk says such venues have expanded to include a variety of new products like meat and fresh cut produce. She says that presents a challenge.

“If you are going to be getting those kinds of foods, the kinds of things that need to be refrigerated, you need to be aware of that at the farmer’s market. You wouldn’t want to buy a piece of meat, walk around the farmers market for a couple hours, put it in your car and then drive home for another hour,” Quinlisk says. Taking a cooler with ice to the farmer’s market is good idea, according to Quinlisk.

Once you’re home, she advises putting the items in the refrigerator right away and try to use them in a day or two or freeze them. She says washing your hands thoroughly is also a great start in preventing food borne illness.

It is the 19th time the state has taken a child under the safe haven law, which allows parents to give up custody of babies age 14 days and younger with no questions asked. The law was approved in 2001 after an eastern Iowa teenager killed her home-delivered newborn. Officials say all previous safe haven babies have been successful adopted.

The collision caused the bicycle of 49-year-old Jeffrey Gray, also of Onawa, to be hit. He was thrown into a ditch. Gosch was pronounced dead at a hospital. Gray was taken to another hospital with non-life threatening injuries. It’s unclear if Meyer was hurt.
