Hosmer homers, bullpen shines, Padres beat Cardinals 4-2

Sports

June 13th, 2018 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Padres bullpen has stepped up to fill a hole in San Diego’s rotation.

Eric Hosmer homered, San Diego’s bullpen took a perfect game into the sixth inning and the Padres beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 on Tuesday night for their 10th win in 14 games.

This was the third bullpen game for San Diego this season, all since left-hander Joey Lucchesi went down with a right hip strain.

Padres reliever Matt Strahm started the bullpen game and retired nine batters on 36 pitches, including four strikeouts. Adam Cimber (3-2) retired the next six with two strikeouts before Harrison Bader broke up the perfect game with an infield single in the sixth. Bader was promptly erased in a double play.

Brad Hand pitched the ninth for his 20th save.

Hosmer drove the first pitch of the fourth inning to center field to give the Padres a 1-0 lead. It was his second home run in three games.

Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas (7-2) struck out five in six innings and walked none. He has walked one or less in all seven of his home starts this season, but St. Louis still lost for the second time in three games.

Marcell Ozuna’s RBI single snapped the Padres’ shutout bid in the seventh. Ozuna has driven in five runs in his last four games.

UP NEXT

Cardinals RHP Luke Weaver (3-5, 4.35 ERA) will get the start in the series finale against the Padres and LHP Eric Lauer (2-4, 6.64 ERA) on Wednesday at 7:15 CDT. Weaver has not allowed a run in 12 innings (two career starts) against San Diego. Lauer gave up six runs in 2 1/3 innings against St. Louis on May 11.

Shelter wants to build apartments for chronically homeless

News

June 13th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines homeless shelter is planning to use repurposed shipping containers to construct permanent apartments for chronically homeless people. The 24-unit project would be erected in the same drainage ditch where homeless people have set up camps. Central Iowa Shelter and Services’ director Melissa O’Neil told The Des Moines Register the shelter’s applied for $2.7 million from the National Housing Trust Fund.

The Institute for Community Alliances says the number of people living on Des Moines streets more than doubled to 107 in 2017 from 52 in 2016. In November dozens of the metro’s chronically homeless moved onto retention basin ditch, which sits within 100 feet of the homeless shelter.

Stormy night in store for western IA

Weather

June 13th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

It’ll be a dark and likely stormy night across western Iowa. The National Weather Service in Des Moines reports scattered thunderstorms are forecast to spread from western into central Iowa late tonight (Wednesday), and Thursday morning. The severe weather threat is low, but a few stronger storms could produce hail and gusty winds. Slight chances for more thunderstorms are forecast across parts of northern Iowa late Thursday night into Friday morning and again late Friday night into Saturday morning, once again with a low probability of severe weather.

Transportation commission approves 5 year plan

News

June 13th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

The State Transportation Commission has given final approval to the updated five-year transportation improvement program. The program will spend three-point-four billion dollars on state roadways. That includes the reconstruction work on the interstate systems in Council Bluffs and Sioux City — as well as a section of I-35 from Ankeny to Ames. The plan calls for the completion of the final segment of the four lane expansion of U-S 20 in western Iowa by the fall. Four-lane improvements on U-S 30 in Tama and Benton County and on U-S 61 in southeast Iowa are also in the plan. The plan has one billion dollars targeted at bridge repairs. The state had 51 bridges listed as structurally deficient in 2017.

Challenging schedule awaits Iowa State

Sports

June 13th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

One college football preview magazine expects Iowa State to make more progress next season even though the win total may not show it. Phil Steele’s College Football Preview expects Iowa State to be in bowl contention once again against a difficult schedule. ISU posted upsets over Oklahoma and TCU in 2017 in posting an 8-5 record that included a win over Memphis in the Liberty Bowl. (Click on the left side of any sound bar to listen to the clip)

Steele says this Iowa State team does not have as much experience and another factor this season may be luck. The Cyclones were a plus-10 in turnover margin last season and Steele says history has proven that turnover margins tend to even out.

Steele feels Iowa State’s defense will be solid and he expects the offense to make progress.

Steele says David Montgomery and the run game will be more effective.

Iowa State opens the season at home on September first against South Dakota State. Steele’s College Football Preview will hit the news stands on June 26.
