Boulton not assigned to committees, leader waiting ’til ethics complaint settled

(Radio Iowa) — A Democratic state senator facing sexual misconduct allegations hasn’t been assigned to any committees for the upcoming legislative session. Last month, a woman filed an ethics complaint alleging State Senator Nate Boulton of Des Moines had harassed her, before he was elected to the senate. Senate Democratic Leader Janet Petersen says she will wait to make committee assignments for Boulton until the Senate Ethics Committee completes its investigation. Boulton has until today (Monday) to respond to the complaint.

Boulton dropped out of the Democratic primary for governor this spring, shortly after The Des Moines Register published allegations from three women who accused Boulton of harassment. Petersen — the top Democrat in the state senate — called on Boulton to resign from office months ago, but Boulton has said he intends to serve out his term, which runs through 2020.

Iowa Great Lakes region looks to UI for help in managing flooding

(Radio Iowa) — Leaders in northwest Iowa’s Great Lakes area are enlisting the help of a University of Iowa scientist to study ways to manage flooding. Heavy rains this past summer caused shoreline erosion and temporarily shut down the region’s lakes. Bill Van Orsdel, with the Iowa Great Lakes Association, says closing the lakes causes serious economic damage to a community that thrives on recreation. “It’s devastating to the homeowners, to the residents and to the vacationers,” Van Orsdel says.

Scientists project that over time, these rains will get heavier and the risk of flooding will increase, so the association wants to do something about it. Larry Weber, a U-I Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, is working with a team using computer models to estimate how much the Lower Gar Lake will rise with different amounts of rainfall. Flood control measures include adding more channel structures called culverts, or using a bridge or dam that could handle water flow differently. “We want to make sure we design something that has the utility and lifespan of many decades,” Weber says. “So we want to make sure we think of increasing intensity of rainfall in the future.”

Weber and his team plan to continue to look at different rainfall conditions and will share results with Iowa Great Lakes officials and residents in early 2019.

(AP) — Harrison Butker atoned for a 43-yard miss as time expired with a 36-yard field goal in overtime to give the Kansas City Chiefs a 27-24 victory over the Baltimore Ravens and clinch a playoff spot. The Chiefs held the Ravens on fourth down in overtime to finish off the win.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said he was shocked by security camera footage showing Kareem Hunt shoving and kicking a woman in a Cleveland hotel. In his first comments since the incident nine days ago, the team’s owner also said that the Chiefs were aware of two other offseason incidents involving Hunt but not the extent of them.

UNDATED (AP) — In case you missed it in Week 14 of the NFL season: Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots sent out a Hail Mary defense for the final play against the Miami Dolphins. The problem? Miami didn’t attempt a long pass, instead using a double-lateral play for the winning points. Maybe Rob Gronkowski should not have been on the field for what will be remembered as the Miami Miracle.

A man from Madison County was hospitalized Sunday after he was accidentally shot while hunting. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting that a hunter had been shot near Macksburg. Deputies identified the hunter as Ronald Butler, of Macksburg. Investigators said Butler was with two other adults when the shooting happened. They say he apparently dropped his shotgun as he got out of a vehicle, causing it to discharge.

Butler was taken to the Madison County Hospital, then flown to a Des Moines hospital for additional treatment for his injuries. He was conscious at the time of the shooting, though his condition was unclear as of Sunday night.

And, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating a fatal hunting incident in eastern Iowa’s Marion County. The incident happened late Sunday afternoon, just north of Lake Red Rock. One person died, but their name and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. No other details were immediately available.

Haliburton’s 17 assists lead Iowa State past Southern 101-65

Sports

December 10th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Freshman Tyrese Haliburton has been a fixture in Iowa State’s lineup all season, quietly filling up the stat sheet while his high-scoring teammates grabbed the spotlight. There wasn’t anything quiet about what Haliburton did on a record-setting Sunday night. Haliburton dished out 17 assists to break an Iowa State mark that had lasted 44 years, Marial Shayok had 20 of his 26 points in the second half and the Cyclones cruised past Southern 101-65.

Haliburton also scored 15 points for the Cyclones (8-2), who responded to Thursday’s 98-84 loss at No. 18 Iowa by shooting 70.2 percent from the field — its best since hitting 74.4 percent against Georgia in the 2004 NIT. Haliburton said that Iowa State broadcaster Eric Heft — who set the record against Nebraska in 1974 — joked with him after the Iowa game that he needed the freshman to snap his decades-old record.

That Haliburton did so is even more impressive considering that players like Jeff Hornacek, Jamaal Tinsley and current Denver Nuggets point guard Monte Morris all passed through Ames since then. Thanks to Haliburton, Iowa State had a season high 28 assists on 40 made baskets. …The 36-point margin of victory was Iowa State’s largest in two years. …Five of Shayok’s six 20-point games have come this season. …Forward Cam Lard, who fouled out in the loss at Iowa, picked up four fouls in just seven minutes. …The Cyclones scored 50 points in the paint.

Iowa State could get back a pair of injured starters in star guard Lindell Wigginton and forward Solomon Young for Saturday’s game against Drake. The pair will be eased back into practice this week, and if all goes well they could be ready against the Bulldogs.

Butker’s OT field goal lifts Chiefs past Ravens, 27-24

Sports

December 9th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Harrison Butker atoned for a 43-yard miss as time expired with a 36-yard field goal in overtime, and the Kansas City Chiefs stopped the Baltimore Ravens on fourth down to clinch a playoff spot with a 27-24 victory Sunday. The Chiefs (10-2) twice converted on fourth down before Patrick Mahomes threw a tying touchdown pass to Damien Williams with 53 seconds left. Moments later, Justin Houston strip-sacked Lamar Jackson to give Butker a chance to win the game for Kansas City in regulation. He missed that one. He didn’t miss his second chance.

The Ravens (7-6) marched across midfield as they tried to answer in overtime, but Ronnie Stanley’s holding penalty put them in a bind. Jackson was sacked by Houston and Dee Ford — and wound up leaving the game — and Robert Griffin III threw two incompletions to end it.

Mahomes threw for 377 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Tyreek Hill caught eight passes for 139 yards, including three in overtime to set up the eventual winning field goal. Jackson threw for 147 yards and two touchdowns for the Ravens, who had never lost in three trips to Arrowhead Stadium. Jackson also had 71 yards rushing in his fourth start in place of Joe Flacco .
Both teams looked as if they had the game won in regulation.

The Ravens took the lead with 4:04 to go when a long punt return gave them prime field position, and Jackson threw a third-down touchdown pass to John Brown. But the NFL’s top-ranked defense twice allowed the league’s highest-scoring offense to convert on fourth down. The first came on fourth-and-9 at the Chiefs 40, when Mahomes scrambled to his right and threw an audacious cross-body heave to a hobbled Hill for a 40-yard gain. The second came on fourth-and-3 at the Ravens 5, when Mahomes threw his dump-off to Williams for the tying touchdown.

As the Ravens tried to get into range for kicker Justin Tucker, Houston strip-sacked Jackson to give KC the ball. Butker proceeded to miss his second field goal of the game to force overtime. The Chiefs at times had no problem slicing up the Ravens’ staunch defense, putting together a pair of long TD drives to take a 17-10 lead into the break. Williams capped the first with his short plunge and Travis Kelce finished the other with a nice over-the-shoulder catch.

At other times, the Ravens got enough pressure on Mahomes to make him look like a rookie.
The Chiefs, whose own defense ranks near the bottom of the league, held their own much of the game. They allowed a 75-yard drive entirely on the ground in the first half, which Kenneth Dixon finished with a 3-yard run, but otherwise kept Jackson and Co. from making big plays.

The Chiefs still led in the third quarter when Mahomes’ throw into triple coverage was predictably intercepted. Baltimore marched to the Chiefs 10 before facing fourth-and-2. Coach John Harbaugh came up aces when he gambled by having Jackson throw to the end zone. Third-string tight end Maxx Williams caught the TD pass to knot the game 17-17. It wasn’t the last time the game would be tied.
INJURIES
Ravens: Flacco (hip) and SS Tony Jefferson (ankle) were inactive for the game.
Chiefs: RB Spencer Ware left late in the first half after FS Eric Weddle forced him out of bounds and he landed hard on his right shoulder. He returned after halftime. … Hill (heel) also left late in the half before returning. … WR Sammy Watkins (foot) and SS Eric Berry (heel) were inactive.
UP NEXT: Chiefs: Play the Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night.

Iowa State extends Campbell’s deal through 2024

Sports

December 9th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State is extending coach Matt Campbell’s contract through 2024, a sign that one of the hottest names in the annual coaching carousel is staying put. The Cyclones announced Campbell’s extension on Sunday, also saying they will allocate an extra $1 million for assistant coaches and support staff. Terms of Campbell’s new deal were not disclosed. But he and Iowa State agreed to a 6-year, $22.5 million contract last November.

The No. 25 Cyclones (8-4) have posted back-to-back eight-win seasons, and their six victories in the Big 12 Conference were the most in school history. Iowa State will close the season on Dec. 28 when it faces No. 12 Washington State (10-2) in the Alamo Bowl.
